Savannah had a huge battle in the Revolution, 1779. The famous evangelist George Whitefield created the first orphanage in the US in Savannah, GA. Savannah was also the site of the Vanderbuilt Cup races in 1908.

Yes, it's called the Seige of Savannah, one of the bloodiest battles of the American revolution. William Jasper, Sally St. Clare and Casimir Pulaski were all killed in this battle.

i used to be a "ghost" for old savannah tours, and my character was a 71st brigade scot (redcoat) from the siege. when i started filling in the gaps in my script from actual history i learned a whole lot about that battle. one interesting thing i found was that pulaski was hit with grapeshot (to the groin) and this may have been the first time that modified grapeshot (invented by a brit named william shrapnel) may have been used in a battle. it so surprised d'estaing and the other generals that the short cannons could do so much damage that pulaski didn't know what it would have done to the cavalry. the fact that the fog from oct 9th was still at play and the redoubt structures made it hard to charge spelled so much death for the invading french and colonials. just thought i'd chime in with that. imagine if every tactic you'd ever used before had worked but were introduced to a secret weapon like that. game changer.

I wonder are there photographs of Ellis and Liberty Squares before they were turned into tiny strips of land by Montgomery Street,

Savannah has a tremendous amount of wonderful history that it is a shame that it is a complete and absolute dump. It's no wonder it is refered to as 'the old lady with a dirty face.'
