Wizards & Warriors X The Fortress of Fear for the Game Boy is a sequel to Ironsword, and a short and challenging platformer that condenses the formula of the first two NES games. That title screen music is some of the best I've heard on the Game Boy, and this one was one tough adventure! 🍖
The introductory animation and outro text were created and designed by Saad Azim.

I was looking forward to this after seeing you talk about it on twitter. I inherently love most GB games that try and squeeze as much as they can out of such limited hardware, but this game was just too unforgiving for me. The jumps that have you disappearing offscreen were just too much. I'm happy to see such a detailed review of it though. Thank you for taking the time

Back in 88 when me and my friend got game boys for Xmas, he got this game and we would trade often. I liked this game more than he did, and I played it a lot! It surprises me how well I remember it all these years later! I never beat it and I don’t know that I got that far even, I just remember playing the balls off it and feeling really frustrated. I always liked that challenge though. I love this game, and I’m glad you reviewed it!

Hungry Goriya I hope so! I lost my NES, SNES, game boy and N64 collections in a move back in 2008, and I haven’t been able to bring myself to try and rebuild. I do a bit of emulation, but it’s not quite the same. Actually, I’ve discovered that I’m really enjoying watching play through a such as these that you’ve made. I know the games already, but it’s fun to see the joy (and frustration) that they bring to others as well. Also, I have to say, you have a wonderful, beautiful voice. I enjoy just hearing that as much as I enjoy hearing your enthusiasm and interest for the game itself!

It's nice to see a positive review on this game, for once. Given when it was released in the Game Boy lineup (one of the first titles), an action platformer was a much-needed change of pace vs. all the static single-screen games and slow-paced puzzle games that most development studios started with.

The jumps remind me of frustrating ones in Simon's Quest and Castlevania the Adventure. It was funny seeing the knight switch to jump damage while still in the air and also hearing how enemy patterns on the last stage totally change. Go you beating a difficult game and thanks for another video!
@hungrygoriya
@hungrygoriya 4 жыл бұрын
Those jumps where Simon's hanging on by the strength of his toes? Super stressful! And yeah, it's like the game's rubbing it in by letting you know in advance that you jumped from too high... it was the most frustrating part of the game, by far. You're very welcome. It took me at least 10 hours of attempting to get through it, and it was nice having an audience to cheer me on. Otherwise I might have just put it away and not pushed through for that last attempt. And you're also very welcome. I appreciate you taking the time to watch!

Excellent video Hungry! I especially loved how you put the failed jump attempts there with the giant skull face for the outro. Simply loved that you saw the charm in its difficulty. I played through the first W&W and cheated my way to the end of Ironsword and loved them both, so this one was a no-brainer to pick up. They're all really tough but they're charming in the jankiest way... I can't get over how fulfilling beating a hard game like this was. And thanks about the outro. This one is for some reason more charming for me. Maybe that's just how much I love the Game Boy. FoF's kinda scraggly but I did manage to keep getting better and better the more I played. Wow. I can't believe you got a sense of accomplishment from this one - props! These are just not-great designs, but you really dug in there and showed this who's boss :) The music at least is objectively very good - that's just sort of assumed though, since Rare developed these and they were perhaps at maximum "80's British micro computer developer" status back in those days. And those UK studios really knew how to pump out great beats and melodies on tinny sound hardware. Man, _Wizards & Warriors_ is such a bad series full of unrealized potential (hell, they never even *attempted* to make their warrior look like the Fabio guy on the boxes), but it's *such* a good name for old fantasy games. You'd figure that, if one could not get a D&D license, or Might & Magic, they would've tried to acquire the Wizards & Warriors name from Acclaim at some point. Heck, it's weird that Acclaim themselves didn't do much with it after the 8-bit generations - it's easy to imagine them using the name for an SNES title in the vein of something like Cadash or Rastan, or an N64 title like Dragon Sword 64. Weird that they just stopped unceremoniously.
@hungrygoriya
@hungrygoriya 4 жыл бұрын
Crossing the finish line in this game was a fantastic feeling. Overcoming the limitations of that challenge was something I was losing hope on... but I made it! And it is so strange that this series just dropped off the face of the earth. It's pretty disappointing, because as much as the NES games get called down, I honestly really enjoyed the first and second games in the series (I haven't played the third). They're hard games, but they are fun to figure out like a good adventure game should be. Some of it's a bit cryptic, but I agree with you - so much untapped potential here!

Sorry you didn't get too far. It took me a while to get a feel for this and even then, it was still really tough to get through for me. Is the Robin Hood game the Prince of Thieves game? I've played that on NES but not the Game Boy version.

Nothing like having the final boss disappear in an explosion puff 💥 that has the word ZAP or POW on it. And they couldn’t have a different music track for the final levels? Why do all the sprites look like placeholder/programmer art? Oh well, I’m more critical and less patient as an adult. 😀

The explosion text made me laugh every time. I didn't have it in the video, but the noise enemies make sounds like horrible meowing... it was very endearing :D

I kinda like the look of this game, but it seems like it could be pretty frustrating.

I wonder what ever happened to Fabio. (The guy on the covers lol).

I think he's still around? I know he had a rollercoaster bird incident many years ago... that's the one thing I remember about him other than his Ironsword box art :D

@@hungrygoriya lol I looked up his wiki page and he apparently posed for a lot of romance novel covers too. There was so much goofy charm some of these older game arts have that's just lost today. :P

I'm probably in the minority here, but the only Wizards & Warriors game I liked was W&W3. The first one seemed kinda bland, the second one had horrible enemies/the worst jumps, and this one is too hard/oddly structured. I'd say the 3rd one was the most balanced and fleshed out. Managed to beat it as a kid, so it couldn't have been as bad as Legend of Zelda II (couldn't beat it back then) or even Simon's Quest. Then again, it's just my subjective opinion.

Right on! W&W3 is the only one that I haven't played yet myself, but I don't know a lot of people that love it. You're probably in the minority, but I'm sure there's lots of good in that game. I'll be happy to try it out myself some day. Ironsword is just a nightmare... I couldn't beat that one without giving myself some extra lives after the stupid game stops letting you continue... ugh.

So it's Dark Souls for GB? lol I always thought it was strange when on the cover of these games, the character is a typical looking Barbarian(or Fabio) but in game, we play a generic Knight.

I haven't played Dark Souls, but this one was definitely one of the hardest games I've played! And I know, right? I wonder why they thought putting Conan on the front cover to sell a game about a knight was a good idea.

Fyi: "invincibility" is a translation error. It's invisibility, and the power is pretty useless. The "U Can Beat Video Games" channel shows you where to find the powerup, and demonstrates what it does, but strongly advises against getting it.

The key is probably better spent elsewhere eh? I love that channel... I think I must've missed this episode though!
