Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked the tendency is to go as far as you can take it". - Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Ugghhh one of my bigest pet peeves surrounding the telling of Hunter S. Thompson's life, is when his real morning routine is mixed up with the one fabricated by someone else. This video uses the one falsely made up by a journalist. He pretty much guessed at what he thought Hunter would do and published it. Here's the much more entertaining quote from the man himself describing his daily morning breakfast routine (it's still ridiculous ofc): "I like to eat breakfast alone, and almost never before noon; anybody with a terminally jangled lifestyle needs at least one psychic anchor every twenty four hours, and mine is breakfast. In Hong Kong, Dallas, or at home-and regardless of whether or not I have been to bed-breakfast is a personal ritual that can only be properly observed alone, and in a spirit of genuine excess. The food factor should always be massive: Four bloody Marys, two grapefruits, a pot of coffee, Rangoon crêpes, a half-pound of either sausage, bacon, or corned beef-hash with diced chilies, a Spanish omelette or eggs Benedict, a quart of milk, a chopped lemon for random seasoning, and something like a slice of Key lime pie, two margaritas, and six lines of the best cocaine for dessert... Right, and there should also be two or three newspapers, all mail and messages, a telephone, a notebook for planning the next twenty four hours, and at least one source of good music... All of which should be dealt with outside, in the warmth of the hot sun, and preferably stone naked."

HST was one of the very few celebrities I actually cried upon hearing of their death. Read all his books multiple times years before and admired the man greatly despite the fact he could be a degenerate louse. It was an enormous shock but in a way I'm glad he didn't live to see the state our country is in today...you know he'd be driven apoplectic with rage and grief with every passing day by the slow poisoning of democracy.

I also had no idea the Rum Diary was an actual book, or that there had been a movie of him BEFORE Johnny Depp's amazing portrayal in the 1998 movie, which I also felt was mostly faithful to the book. A nice video. I was a correspondent via mail with HST for years, even met him a few times. In my own way I was a wild person but nothing could prepare you for the real HST in character. We went to a science fiction convention over an Easter weekend, just so he could see what depravity went on. The real depravity though was on Easter Sunday when the hotel's restaurant would fill up with the families, their offspring dressed in their newest Easter clothes, all staring at the SF convention attendees who were, by this time, worn out by drugs, alcohol and general craziness. I wrote up a story about it, tried to do it Gonzo style. Sent it to him, got a positive response back. The best response possible. "It reads like I wrote it". Even though we had lost contact long before his death I still think about him and wished we had interacted more.

Oh gosh no you’re fine. Here’s what I found off google. Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles, which are responsible for breathing and moving parts of the body, including the arms and legs. The name myasthenia gravis, which is Latin and Greek in origin, means "grave, or serious, muscle weakness." But for me it effects my chewing, swallowing and facial muscles. So I choke frequently on food sometimes turning blue before I fix it. Sometimes my arms feel like lead as well. Other people have vision issues or troubles breathing. It’s more common in people in their 50’s and 60’s and needs to kind of have a perfect storm of things to go wrong to get it. I was 25 when I found out. But I’ve lead a pretty normal life minus the choking. Or sometimes my face being stuck. Haha

The medication is a bit of a double edged sword the stuff I take has up to 10% chance of causing cancer. So that’s a bit of a bummer. Such a shame. Knowing what Thompson thought of the likes of Richard Nixon, I would have been _very_ interested to know what the man made of the current occupant of the Whitehouse. America lost what was just about it's most insightful, articulate voice when Thompson passed. Nobody else's writing touches his work. He is still sorely missed.
