The fact that Hanzo stood in Ilumi's way to protect Gon makes him one of my favorite characters. He wasn't Gon's friend at all; he just respected him as a fellow warrior and wasn't going to let him get assassinated while he was injured.

The writing in that Illumi scene is so good. I didn't fully appreciate It the first time I saw this episode, I just thought "oh Killua is scared of his brother"... But he manipulated him so good, he completely destroyed Killua's conviction, especially with the test in the end

@@ernestorodriguez5117 Just in case someone reads this (I'm going to spoil most of Killua's arc) I don't fully agree because it's not like the needle was the whole of it Killua goes through a great deal of development and struggling before actively going against the needle which really triggers its effect By the time he has to deal with it, it means he's already changed quite a lot and it acts more as a symbol of breaking free from his family He also continues his development through the arc after that by actively going after his family to save his sister and not just himself Like I don't think Killua's arc can be just reduced to the needle, he broke through a lot of stuff earlier and the needle is probably just a symbolic moment to wrap it all up. It's also a pretty cool moment I get why some people are not big fans though, I also like a lot more what comes before and after

@@halt9072 Yeah, I get your point and already think that, but symbolic or not, is not a good way to end up phase of a character arc (remark on End Up, cause I like how the author develops Killua a lot after and before that, but it could get a much better job doing anything else for something that important for the character). And reformulating the way I say the thing I say, "I think that's the less better solution Togashi has come up with for a conflict in HxH" is a better way to represent reality, cause could be the worst of Togashi's, but could also be the best for mayority of mangakas in the industry. Togashi is still one of the GOAT

The friendship between Gon and Killua is the heart and soul of this show, and it is probably my favourite in all anime.

It's only during a certain arc later in the series where Gon has not been a good friend because he was affected by an event that happened during that arc. You can even see in this episode that Gon cares for Killua because he got angry for his sake with what Illumi did to him.

@@friteomelette3812 Gon saved Killua from becoming assasin. Even in this episode you see how much he means to Gon. He went to his home and sacrificed his life to get Killua out, he said during the Greed Island that he is so glad to have him as friend. Are we watching the same show? If you are judging Gon based on episode 116 which was the only point in the series where Gon (12 YEARS OLD KID) was extremely vulnerable and emotional because his other FRIEND died to the merciless creature who was in front of him, you are just not able to understand human emotions.

The fact that, had Bodoro beat Leorio, Killua knew he would have to fight Leorio next, in the state he was in, is interesting to consider too. Leorio would have likely beat an injured Bodoro but it's completely in character for Killua not to have any faith in Leorio as a fighter.

That's a good point I never thought of and even though Killua never seemed to like Leorio much Leorio was most likely the first person to ever stand up to his brother for Killua even verbally. He also was the one to him he was friends with Gon. I actually love the idea that he knew he was going to kill someone and he didn't want it to be Leorio.

Yes, although it helps that togashi hard carried through his manga haha. But some of the direction in this anime is amazing. I personally like that they were much more subtle with the symbolism (especially for the darker scenes) compared to the 1999 version, which should the darker scenes more literally.

Another time TOGASHI did it. He COMPLETELY changed EVERYTHING Japanese love about battle manga: tournament.the troupe that is so much loved by the audience is totally being completed with a flashback. No long fights, no long episodes/chapters. Straight forward for what is needed and what TOGASHI wants to tell with his story.togashi, the genius!

Spoilers below: This is why I like the first arc and don't care for heaven's arena. Some people disagreed with me on that in the previous episodes videos. But I felt like heaven's arena was much more predictable. Like Gon and Killua just beat everyone down until nen happens and they lose. Then they learn nen and beat everyone but Hisoka. It was a much more generic anime plot imo.

I love how this whole tournament is such a twist on the traditional format! You really don't expect any of it playing out as it does... speaking of, poor Killua. Its the first time we really get a glimpse into how messed up his background is

Illumi had such an intense and terrifying impact this episode. Like I already considered Hisoka a very threatening and intimidating presence, that would likely grow to a bigger threat, but then Illumi sweeps in, and seems just as terrifying, and weird in his own way. Also my heart goes out to Killua, just wanting friends. I think you were both right to like Hanzo from the start, he proved himself when he stood by our boys Kurapika and Leerio to block the exit from Illumi. Also I am glad you are enjoying the show so much, a lot of us figured/expected you would like it a lot. Its an interesting mix of dark, wholesome, cute, disturbing, sad, heartbreaking, shocking, funny, sweet. Oh and surprising. I also like how Illumi almost seems more disturbing and terrifying in his normal "human" look, than when he looks like a robot with pins in his face.

What I love about the results of this exam is that Killua never wanted to become a Hunter, so it makes perfect sense that he was the one to lose, yet you don't see it coming because he's one of our boys. You just assume Killua will pass because he's so strong, and of course our boys will pass. Love it.

The Zoldyck family is the ultimate anime family. They are very filial thats its so destructive, they are so loyal that its suffocating, they are so protective that its abusive and manipulative. They're the most complex anime family.

Honestly one of my favourite episodes in the show, let alone the arc. This is the episode that completely hooked me on the show, and to this day is one of my favourite episodes of anime. Congrats, you've finished the prologue.

Absolutely! Togashi executed this perfectly. And massive props to the team at MAD HOUSE for sticking to his manga panels pretty much exactly (with the exception of missing out the scene with kite at the start). The 1999 one went on a couple weird tangents, but the phantom troupe arc was very nicely executed in the 1999 version too.

It's a fucked up family with a genetic disposition for sociopathy. The only ones who are the least affected are the ones with white hair in every generation. That's why they're also the ones who get to lead the family. Illumi is trying to get around that by controlling Killua.

You will find out what Hisoka said to Kurapika soon but for Bodoro a common theory is that what Hisoka whispered to Bodoro was something along the lines of: "If you don't forfeit, I am going to fight the children", having somehow heard, or just assumed, that Bodoro cared about them. This is based on what Bodoro said when Netero was interviewing each candidate.

this is indeed a story about love! forget becoming a hero or greater purposes (although helping people is, sometimes, involved, it's never the main reason or what motivates them in later and way more intense arcs). It's about your journey inside and how you connect with others in a f*cked up world. My best friend watched it for the first time some days ago and at some point he could not stop watching, going on for 30 episodes a day.

Please watch "March comes in like a lion". It's one of the most beautiful animes I've ever seen. I've never seen another show, live action or anime, which made me believe the characters to be actual human beings. I think you two would really fall in love with that show.

The 'impression' points that are used for building the fight bracket, is essentially based on how many times the person is mentioned during the chairman's interview. Gon was probably mentioned the most.

I love this episode! Togashi sprinkles small amounts of subtle foreshadowing for the coming darkness in the first parts of the hunter exam arc that tell you "this isn't the kid-friendly shounen you think it's going to be", but this is one of the episodes where they really start showing you more of that. This is only the beginning! So excited for you guys, watching this anime for the first time is such a treat and i wish i could too T ^ T

This is the dramatic climax of the first arc and one of my favorite episodes. It also demonstrates so good that Hunter x Hunter is not a normal Shonen story and really tries to do new stuff with established tropes and subvert them. The story also goes quite dark some times and this is one of the first dips into the darker themes.

This is the first big case of shonen conventions, aka the naruto vibes, breaking down in hxh. It's subtle at first, and there's still a good number of episodes with that familiar feeling. Then at a certain point there's nothing subtle about it lol. These are the "good old days", enjoy.

What I love about HXH is being surprised while watching. Too many shows are overly predicatable to the point where you wouldn't even need to continue watching because it's exactly as you predicted. The most recent example for me was the Avatar: Way of Water movie. As soon as they said they were going to the water tribe, I immediately predicted the entire rest of the story.

I love how every reactor thought killua would kill hanzo 😭 like not 1 person stopped to consider the fact that hanzo would probably be stronger than Killua. Strongest people during the hunter Exam where : 1. Illumi 2. Hisoka 3. Hanzo 4. Empty to show the gap in strength compared to the other characters 5. Killua 6. Kurkupa (terrible spelling) 7.Gon

@@amrabdalnasser4691 I thought that was obvious? I never once thought hisoka was on the same level or stronger and I have honestly never seen anyone that puts hisoka above him. Now that I'm typing this , I wonder why hisoka never tried to fight illumi? It should be easy for him to provoke illumi by theatening to kill killua
