Hunting the western hemisphere's largest grouse on open public lands. Sage grouse once numbered in the tens of millions. Destruction of its sagebrush habitat has knocked populations to less than 500,000. One bird limit, two-day season in Idaho. Hunters must show interest, contribute $ and political pressure to restore this wonderful bird.

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Beautiful shotgun Ron. Can you tell us about it ?
@RonSpomerOutdoors
@RonSpomerOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Sure John. It's a Kimber Valier 20 ga. sidelock made by Huglu in Turkey. Turkish walnut. Case hardened receiver. 28" barrel., imp. and modified. Double triggers. Checkered butt, no pad. I've forgotten when Kimber was importing them, but about 10 years ago, I think. Anyway, rather a classic, sleek, fast handling side-by-side upland gun in the classic English style. A bonus is that after you miss anything, you can take solace in the beauty of the gun.

I was very surprised to find out that junkyards in some parts of the country are full of late-model cars with hail damage. They're perfectly driveable, the damage being strictly cosmetic, but for reasons no one can imagine insurance companies don't want them repaired.

That looked like fun! The first time I ever saw Sage Grouse was on my first Wyoming antelope hunt. On the first morning of the hunt I kept seeing something flying through the sage and I finally figured out they were birds. My hunting buddy, a Wyoming native and wildlife biologist, told me all about them and how important they are to the sage brush habitat. I think he referred to them as an indicator species. Anyway, great video and I think your dog had the most fun.

You must not hunt them they must be conserved 😭 where is our earth moving?
@RonSpomerOutdoors
@RonSpomerOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Monika, you cannot conserve individual grouse. They'll die soon from something. The trick is to conserve the habitat in which they live, nest, forage, escape. Converting wild lands into highways, reservoirs, housing, etc. is what destroys wildlife.

What’s the best area out west for sage or ruffed grouse where good outfitters are?
@RonSpomerOutdoors
@RonSpomerOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
I know of no sage grouse outfitters/guides. Suggest you research State Fish & Game agencies at Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada for details on seasons, dates, suitable areas. Lots of public land, so access shouldn't be a problem.

Nice hunt! But hey aren’t they endangered
@ericsteinhauer3991
@ericsteinhauer3991 5 ай бұрын
No they are not, but there’s plenty of woke unemployed biologists that would like to designate them endangered to create secure employment for themselves! & nothing the biologists have done has increased grouse numbers!
