Across Cambodia, Thailand, London and New York, investigators are on the hunt for evidence to reclaim ancient artefacts now housed in prominent museums around the world.
Hot on the trails of an infamous art dealer who plundered sacred temples for decades, a team of lawyers, archaeologists and researchers in Cambodia are unearthing ancient ruins and seeking out former looters to help bring over 2,000 looted Khmer statues back home.
In London, an amazing discovery by an art historian-turned-sleuth sends a retired archaeologist and his wife across Thailand in search of evidence that could force the Met Museum in New York to return one of its most famous statues.

Part 1: • Hunting Priceless Reli...
=====
About the show: Countless priceless artefacts have been looted from Asia. A new generation of online sleuths are fighting to prove that they were stolen and reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs.

I am Cambodian (Khmer) & the recovery of these statues are very important. It is true that it is more than just art. These statues are a reminder of the strength, greatness, beauty & resiliency of our Cambodian (Khmer) ancestors.

I remember when i was in Cambodia with family and i asked why there was missing heads from some of the statues at the temples we were visiting, and my uncle told me it was looted. I was baffled that this was still happening. Its gross knowing, there is so much stolen national treasures in Western countries like Australia where i live.

Yes it is the perfect moment to return all artifacts to their rightful place, offering a glimpse of the Khmer Empire's grandeur. With that the Khmer people could proudly exhibit the genuine history to their neighbor in SEA, demonstrating the rich heritage of their land. All jewels and statues intertwine both the history and culture of Cambodia.

Most Khmer Art was either looted by Thais or were sold by locals to Thailand during the 90s. So if it was looted again from Thailand. Then essentially any Khmer Art found internationally should be returned back to Cambodia. Folk legend in Cambodia has it that these Art has a soul and that eventually they will all find their way back to Cambodia where it belongs. Its just a matter of time.

In the Angkor Wat temple you are miss the wood doors and 108 Buddha heads. Your missing the sun god statue of Surye in the Surya temple. I hope they get people to start guarding these temples so they don’t get defaced and destroyed any more.

Oh, please, Thai, be working and acting up, all excited to claim the Golden Boy statue as theirs. Disgusting. Buriram province was once part of the vast Khmer Empire, and yeah, the land was taken and is now under Thai control, but please note that whether the "Golden Boy" statue was from the Khmer Empire or really from Buriram province, as they claimed in the video, that does not mean it is of Thai cultural origin. The "Golden Boy" statue is to be a portrait of King Jayavarman VI, the Khmer King! originated in the Khmer Empire. So whatever argument Thai raises is nonsense, and the statue must be returned to Cambodia.

I think because most of those statues were built as to pay respect to our religion back then ( hinduism ), that is why you can see many statue of god Vishnu, Prahma, shiva, lakshmi, Hanuman, etc. For Thailand, they established their nation around 1238, and their main religious is Buddhism, so that is why not many Hinduism statues there.

Thailand was part of Angkor. With Cambodia being the motherland they have over 2000 temple all across Cambodia. Not including the Khmer temples built in Thailand,Laos or Vietnam. The magnitude of temples built in Cambodia is overwhelming so what you see still standing is just a fraction of what used to be. Many temples that predate Angkor wat by 600 years are in the jungle buried, destroyed, or looted Thailand didn't exist until 13th century and their temples are made out of mortar bricks except the ones built by Khmer . Khmers stop using mortar bricks I think after 9th century and went towards sandstone. I'm guessing Thais used bricks because it was easier for them or lack of sandstone. Not sure

See Buriram villagers spook Khmer language in the video? Proof is proof (not only Buriram). That said Khmer is Thai’s ancestors. Just modern name of Khmer is Cambodia, how can they deny their ancestors? The more you do the research the more you realize who you are and who is the real owner. Good luck of your reclaim journey, nonetheless the original cultural owner is Khmer whose modern name is CAMBODIA.🇰🇭

It’s hard and very complicated though many of us know the history of the Khmer Empire and the history and culture. Many Thai nationalist today have their own history and beliefs and refuse to accept the fact that the same Khmer people in Cambodia today derived from the Khmer Empire. Thai nationalist today believes they are the true descendants of the Khmer Empire that they refer to as Khom and that the Khmers today are nothing but descendants of slaves that help build the Angkor Wat Temple under the direction of their great ancestors aka the Varman lineage aka Angkor period.
@tevanne08
@tevanne08 6 ай бұрын
I think what is very important to learn from this is that… though nationalism is great. Nationalism can also blind you from believing the truth, both Thailand and Cambodia share a long history of culture, religion and traditions. Though Khmers are direct descendants, Thais also share that rich history and culture alongside the ancient Khmers and the Khmer Empire. We both need to acknowledge our heritage and roots. Instead of fighting and the whole negativity through nationalism and this goes for both countries.

@nohomonohetero7932 3 ай бұрын
@@tevanne08I think the claims from Thais stating that they are closely related to the Angkor people than present day Cambodians is because they barely experience any wars. I'm Cambodian by nationality due to the fact that my great- grandparents from both of my parent's side are Chinese, Laos , and Thai. However, I'm still Khmer because I believe in Cambodian values not Thai nor Chinese and neither laos. The majority of Cambodians aren't Pure Khmer, they are in fact hybrids ( because the pure Khmers are either dead since Pol pot or live in a rural province nowadays ), I can say that secretly my country is very diverse. Cambodia has faced massive wars and cultural shifts so many times, when Siem took our people to their country or when they controlled Cambodia leading some Siems to create families with other Cambodians that also contribute to cultural shifts plus when France took over Cambodia. That's why many Thais would say that because they don't pay much attention to detail nor comprehend how war affects other countries that leads to no one being related to their past ancestors.
