Niall Rowantree is in Swedish Lapland to shoot capercaillie over Finnish spitz. Plus he tries out a Blaser D99 drilling in 7x57, and he looks at why the RSPB has failed to reintroduce the capercaillie to Scotland where, in Sweden, they hunt and eat them for lunch.

Why shoot game birds?
Game is wild, natural and free range, and it is one of the healthiest meats available today. It is low in cholesterol and high in protein. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Both pheasant and partridge contain high levels of iron, protein, vitamin B(6) and selenium, which helps to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
In addition to the nutritional benefits of game, game shooting is worth £2 billion annually to the UK rural economy and supports 74,000 jobs. There are 480,000 (UK government figures) active game shooters in the UK who enjoy bird shooting under the principles of the Code of Good Shooting Practice.
More than 2 million hectares are actively managed for shooting in the UK creating proven (PACEC, 2014) conservation benefits and preserving important habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna, in particular farmland birds. UK shooting providers spend £5.4 million on cover crop seeds every year and maintain over 25,000ha of wild-bird cover.

Great video! Really fun to see you try out our form of hunting. You should consider changing the title though, the word 'rare' seems to make people think that you're hunting an endangered species. I get it and I think it's very clear in the video but some people don't really get it.

Weidmannsheil, Pro tip for using the d99 with the shot kam, remove the “liner” in between the shot gun barrels, then the shot kam can be mounted right underneath, centered in between the two shotgun barrels. Nice and streamlined and does not snag 😉

Niall should spring a few more bucks on the shotkam 12g sxs mounting bracket. This will fit 20g sxs and I have many videos with my 20g drilling and it will keep better balance and easier to keep the picture level without video editing. Hunting capers is one thing, filming the kill shot is even harder. Well done on the effort.

this not far from where i grew up.. Currently I live further south down at the coast (400 km). I hunt mainly grouse and capercaile here. I had a drilling once, a 12/12-222 but it didnt fit me good so now im using what they call "norrlandskombi" ie, northland combination gun. Ie, two guns - a rifle and a shotgun :) But later in the season when snow comes I mainly use the rifle for all my hunting, but early fall the shotgun gets most of the use but I enjoy using calls on grouse on swamps. Then you need a rifle to hit them when they come and land everywhere from 100-150 meters away.

I'm a hunter my self guys. But I don't think that title would sit well with alot of people and could send the wrong message especially Antis 👹 would take advantage of it. Perhaps cut out the Rare part of the title. people will get the context of how there rare back home anyway but not where he was shooting. Otherwise you're just asking for trouble.

Thanks for this. I think the point is that the conservation industry keeps telling us the birds are rare. But in Sweden, they aren't. So what's the conservation industry doing wrong? / Charlie

@@fieldsportstv there just isn’t enough suitable habitat for them in Scotland yet - well, at least it’s too fragmented and so if they try to expand out of their core territory they have nowhere good enough to move to. So more open pine woodland is definitely needed ideally to join up the pockets of Caledonian pinewood. Also there needs to be more predator control! Foxes in particular. However with wetter springs right when they’re hatching a lot of nests fail as the chicks die in the cold rain. So begs the question of how much climate change is going to restrict numbers anyway... tragic as they’re fantastic birds

A few points to make after watching this video: First of all, your description says Niall "looks at why the RSPB has failed to reintroduce the capercaillie to Scotland." This doesn't make sense because the RSPB have never reintroduced capercaillie to Scotland - and Niall never mentions the RSPB once. It looks like you've made a desperate attempt to shoehorn the RSPB in somehow to try and bash them and it makes the channel come across as very bitter and silly. Secondly, Niall clearly enjoys the amazing woodland habitats he's in yet he tells us that there's basically no point in rewilding Scotland because of climate change and that these efforts to save capercaillie won't work. Capercaillie are present throughout several parts of Europe which are at a latitude much further south than Scotland and Scandinavia - including places such as Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Croatia and Italy - so I wholly disagree with his opinion on this. Ecological restoration in Scotland can help tackle the climate crisis. Our frankly pathetic 4% native tree cover could be expanded, allowing our currently fragmented pine forest habitats to link up and become better suited for capercaillie. Sadly, the gamekeepers of Scotland appear to be against woodland expansion - seemingly for their own selfish reasons. My last point is about the ticks Niall mentions. The tick situation is so bad in Scotland probably because we have far too many deer, thanks to the shooting estates who encourage huge numbers for their shoots. Sweden needn't worruy about such things. I'm very jealous of Nialls trip to Sweden, I would love to go and experience what Scotland may have looked like several thousand years ago. I just find it astonishing that Niall has seemingly been left uninspired by his trip given that he thinks we shouldn't bother with rewilding. Perhaps he should spend some time walking through places like Glen Affric or Mar Lodge to see that rewilding isn't just some pipe dream.

Thy are not endagered over here, and using rifle with fmj is one of preferred methods for centuries. It can be considered our way of Snipe shoot and experience on the black bird trickeled into the war precison shots by the troops with Krag and 6,5 Fmj .
