Dude that’s the kinda hunt that I love there’s people out there that kill giant bucks all the time and it barely even gets there heart goin. I hate to see a bunch of people goin out to places were you got 3 big bucks that were raised/farmed up and it’s basically guaranteed to shoot em. I killed a big buck this year on a patch of woods that’s barely been touched in North Carolina and if you know anything about NC you know we’re not known for big bucks so it was a buck of a lifetime for around here

I’ve read that if you’re within 100 meters, you should aim slightly lower because they have an slight upward trajectory that flattens out at 100.

Thinking about getting a mossberg 12ga probably a mossberg88 cause it's cheaper than a 500 if I can find one in this pandemic I'm probaly just get the shotgun and not a rifle cause of this pandemic

I agree with others. Look at the muzzle as shown. It is a smooth bore, no choke. In fact, you would need a gunsmith to thread that muzzle to take a choke. But from the pattern of the hit, he was shooting a slug. Also, some Texas trivia. If shooting deer with a shotgun on a TPWD drawn hunt (means it does not count against your deer tags from your AHP,) then you must use slug. Which means you cannot use a choke.

older shotguns didnt use screw in chokes. the choke was actually machined in the barrel.

You should use number 5 cylinder choke, otherwise yıu can damage the choke threads

@@kagan8535 Thanks for the reply. A smooth bore cannot take a choke. For example, I have Mossberg 590A1 12 ga. It is a smooth bore. I would have to get a threaded barrel to hold a choke.

How far of a shot was that for you? Also, I heard you used a slug so would you recommend that over a buckshot?

Read your local laws to see what is allowed. Buckshot isn't allowed in some areas. Slugs are more predictable and faster, more ethical and don't mess up multiple parts of the meat.

That's how we hunt. Are area is shotgun or muzzle loader only. I have 6 rem 870s. My favorite is a 2012 Remington 870 wingmaster light contour. Killed many deer with them

I have a shot gun with a single bead on the front but never hunted deer with it, my question is do I put the bead on the deer or is it kinda like bird hunting just use the bead as like a reference point

Your eye is more or less the rear sight. Shoot at a target with a few brands of foster slugs and see how it goes. 50 yards and under should be what you’re looking at as far as effective range

Go test your shotgun, don't go hunting based on what people tell youto do. If you have to ask, you shouldn't hunt with it..

Road to Reformed I can't answer your question for you but here's what I've learnt on my own, I have a baikil O/U 12gauge ( Russian made gun) with a 28 and a half inch barrel don't ask me why it's probably a Russian thing anyways with sights I both clamped and glued into place mine with a slug will hit within three inches at sixty yards and penetrate six to seven inches of timber , Ps I live in Ireland not many deer here

What choke did you use on that field barrel? cyl, imp cyl, modified? BTW, great shot placement for a barrel without rifle sights. Awesome job!

True Texas native deer are not know for their body size in that part of the state. Most of them top out 130-150 pounds when dressed and in some areas they're often smaller! Thanks for comment

I have killed them with shotguns and muzzleloaders both ,both are equally as fun.With a muzzleloader you have a little better sense of accomplishment.
