My grandfather used a Remington Model 81 in .300 Savage for deer hunting for many years. When I was still too young to hunt, I would wake up early when the "men" (my father, grandfather, older brother and whatever acquaintances were along for the day) went hunting and help them prepare. I always wondered why my grandfather used a "shotgun" when all the other men were using rifles. So I asked him one day and he explained it was not a shotgun, but a rifle, and showed me how it worked. Well I was just amazed! The rifle now resides in my safe and I have used it to take many deer, though it is heavier than I like. I love the cartridge and think it is the best deer cartridge ever conceived, but preferred my Model 99 Savage as being much lighter and easier to carry, but still, took Granddad's old rifle out for a walk now and again. I agree with you that the Model 8 is a nicer rifle. But my Model 81 is not for sale and my sons and/or grandsons will get it "when I am finished with it" My Savage was also a hand-me-down from my grandfather, though I never saw him use it. It was always one of my favorites.

Looks a lot like my locale. At least similar. Those Remingtons were definitely from an Era when Remington meant quality and innovation. The 8/81 and the 14/141 series immediately come to mind. The Europeans perfected the bolt rifle with the Mauser and Steyr, but the Americans had their leverguns pumps and autoloaders for deer and forest hunting. I love it
@rdrrr
@rdrrr 27 күн бұрын
Hunting was largely a rich man's sport in Europe, so pump-action shotguns were looked down upon as "ungentlemanly". In America where shotgun hunting was a matter of putting food on the table, no such taboo existed. Of course, there were poachers in Europe too. Poachers in the UK used to use massive punt guns to hunt illegally. Take out a whole flock of ducks in one volley and then get out of there before the landowner investigates.

I had a minty 81 in .35 Remington which proved very accurate and reliable with open sights and I could kick myself for trading it some 20 years ago. Kermit Roosevelt had a Model 8 in .35 Remington and used it during their 1909 African Safari. Kermit went to a kneeling position when a lioness charged him and placed five rounds into her chest. Her forward momentum caused the dead lioness to crash into him bowling the young Roosevelt over. I suspect that was a memorable experience.

LOVE me a model 8 or 81; from THE MAN himself! Always on the lookout for a No.5(8E) or No.6(8F)model 8. I don’t particularly collect model 8’s or 81’s(J. Stevens Arms & Tool is my game) but I’ve ALWAYS been in love with this firearm. I’ve got two standard(8A) one in 25, one in 30 Remington, and a Peerless grade or 8D in 35 Remington. I also have three model 81’s one standard(8A) in 25 Cal, and two 35’s in 8E; one being a basket case. I’ve seen just a few 8F’s and probably less than 10 8E’s in person; wasn’t able to snag one at the time for one reason or another. I even have an account set aside waiting for examples in those variants(and either a nice No. 535 or No. 190/195 single) to come on market....😁

All have their place. I have one of the "Sporterized by Kimber" 6.5x55 Swede with the Ramline stocks for rainy weather and an 8x57 Mauser with a Hoage stock on it's way to me now. It's getting re-barreled to 9.3x62. When looking for specific or rare calibers, beggars can't be choosy. Otherwise most everything else I have is Walnut. 4 99 Savages, 2 336 Marlins, several custom 98 Mauser in various calibers. One 35 Whelen 98 Mauser action with Mesquite wood stock.

Great video! I had a fine 81 in .35 that was quite interesting to reload in that it was very specific about which load it would shoot most accurately with every powder and bullet combination. I never saw anything like it. I had good luck with cast and light loads but I had to get them just right. .35 Rem is a favorite caliber of mine. I finally settled on a pristine Remington 760 several years ago. I simply always found the models 8 and 81 to kick out of all proportion to the cartridge. My stepfather’s uncle used a mod 8 for his whole adult life. I have only owned one Savage 99, a 1912 .303. It was like a wand in the woods. It had cleaning rod damage that I fixed by cutting it down 3 inches and recrowning. The .303 is rather like a heavier bullet .30-30. I used a 200 grain cast bullet ar 1800 FPS. It worked well and shot accurately. The rifle was not much to look at but I loved it.

Probably lots of other folks already know this, but the gun that Frank Hamer carried when he and his men wiped out Bonnie and Clyde was a Remington model 8 chambered in .35 Remington. Several other men had that model gun in that and various other calibers, along with several also using the fearsome (full auto!) BAR. Also, the model 8 was (of course) a John Browning design.

The Model 8 was very popular with law enforcement of the era - a lot of firepower in a compact package, capable of penetrating an automobile door or windshield and retaining enough energy to reliably stop whoever's inside the vehicle. Exactly what you need when dealing with "motor bandits".

LOVE those old Remington rifles! I had two of them at one time, a model 81 in .300 Savage made right around 1950, and the Auto Loading Rifle which was the predecessor to the model 8 that was made in 1911 chambered in 25 Remington. The 81 in .300 Savage was a beast to shoot! Recoil was STOUT! But I understand why due to all the mass moving when it cycles the action. The one in 25 Remington was an absolute joy to shoot, but ammo was a pain to find. Great video as usual!

my 1906 Remington auto loading rifle in .35rem still functions flawlessly despite not having that tear drop shaped cartridge guide on the outside of the magazine. it needs new stocks since its starting to crack at the wrist and forend. not much blueing left on it. it works just fine and i shoot it superbly. it never has feeding problems or jams. still puts them inside 2 inches at 50 yrds from a rest. man if this rifle could talk.

Great video as always! Couldn't help but smile at the "recoil pad" that a previous owner made for the model 99. I have a 1911 vintage in 30-30 also and mine has the original Savage steel butt plate with the Indian head quality logo on it. While it shouldn't be too much of an issue while hunting, I suppose some would prefer the "modern" convenience of a softer recoil on their shoulder. I don't think any rifles back then had soft recoil pads from the factory, just steel or plastic/bakelite original equipment.
@gusloader123
@gusloader123 2 жыл бұрын
Hello. The .30-30 Win is not a heavy recoiling gun , but the slim shape, short size of the Winchester Model 94 stock made it seem to have more recoil than it does. Sometimes the recoil on our cheek is more than on our shoulder/arm area. I bought a slip-on recoil pad and a slip-on cheek pad for the top of the rifle stock(s). Partly for recoil, but even more to lengthen the "length-of-pull" from trigger to shoulder. The rifle fits better and that usually means you get on target quicker and shot straighter. The cheek pad gets the eyeballs in line with the sights a little better. If I was a rich man, I would have custom made stocks, but I'm not, so I don't. ;-) My arm is about an inch longer than the gun companies (and the military uniform makers ) think the average man is. The M1903a1 Springfield Bolt-action rifle ( WW1, Banana Wars, WW2 ) was obviously made for men 5ft. 8in and shorter. I have had steel butt plates cut scratches and bruises in my arm / shoulder area, so I think a rubber pad on the stock is a good idea. I would mention the company name and where to buy them, but then the YT police or g o o g l e police would zap the post.

I own 2 of these the early ones were known as the Remington auto loading repeating rifle(my great grandfathers rifle). this was replaced with the Remington model 8, the same rifle but different name. interesting fact. The 30 Remington was originally called the 30/30 Remington and were stamped on the barrel as such. Winchester challenged this in court and won. later models were relabeled as 30 Remington. Later the Remington model 81 replaced the model 8 with a curved pistol grip stock as the straight stocks were prone to cracking no other notable changes were noted, aside from the external magazine springs.

Hey, I just bought a Savage 99 this past summer - mine is a .243. Now, I’m going to have to buy a Model 8, too. Love the old time hunt idea. The setting for this video was spot-on terrific. Well done. I just received a gun that might interest you, although it’s a brand new gun. It’s a Martini action single-shot rifle from an American company called Damko. Beautifully simple and clean design. Just awesome. I only searched for it because you got me interested in Martini actions, and I’ve always liked single shots. They popped up on a Google search. Damko is a low-volume manufacturer, so craftsmanship is excellent. I bought a 30-30, but they can do any rimmed cartridge. I’m thinking a .303 British might be appropriate for that action - like your Uberti. :-) Mike, you have re-kindled my interest in classic firearms, and exposed me to guns and historic designs that I never even knew existed. I am grateful for your thoughtful videos and generous insights.

I can see the advantage to a box magazine living in the rain as I do. I affords access into the breech a little better when cleaning after a soaking day in the brush. One of the reasons I long long ago retired my model 94 from active hunting here. Just too many nooks and crannies that held water. If I am going to do a full strip down I prefer to do it in my shop not out in field conditions. My solution was a bolt action with a trapdoor, the 1964 Winchester model 70 (I know. I am still kicking myself for not waiting on a pre 64 featherweight which you could still order in 1964 but had to be shipped. Same new price! 14 year olds aren't known for their patience when going hunting to my chagrin!). In my defense they were brand new that season and the faults weren't widely known.

Just tell people it’s your opinion, and they can have theirs once, and be done with it. It’s not like people won’t argue with you no matter what you say. Good luck hunting. It’d make a good video to see what you got, if you got anything.

I have a Model 8 in .30 Remington. Mine has a tang peep site and front is a folding two ring/post. I love it, but have not been able to find a barrel end wrench/tool to open the recoil spring tube for cleaning.Stripper clips for reloading are as rare as hens teeth! Brass for reloading isn't cheap when available, but having brass to reload at least makes it affordable to shoot.

Thanks for the Video! I love the old Remington Rifles I have a model 81 wood master in 300 savage in excellent condition,great rifle. Speaking of old Remington rifles have you done or considered a video on the old Remington pump actions? I have a model 25 in 25-20 made in 1924 pretty cool little rifle. Love your channel.

USOG, great video I saw a couple of those Remington model 8 a few years ago. Hard to find here in the Midwest USA. I recently bought a Savage 340 bolt action in 30-30 manufactured in 1950. Great deer rifle. It is the carbine version of the rifle. The machining and metallurgy is outstanding. Good bush gun for northern Wisconsin and Minnesota. You should consider doing a video on the early Savage 340 bolt action 30-30's ie... 1949-1955.

Hello. I think he did several months ( or years ?) ago. The Savage is the pricier cousin to my "Stevens 325" .30-30 Bolt-action. Not fancy but effective. Sometimes his video titles do not mention all the firearms he has on the table. No problem. 2 degrees F and fresh snow on the ground, makes it a perfect day for the You Tube watching and some hot cocoa and coffee. :-)

@@gusloader123 Oh ok, I saw my Savage 340 (1950) in 30-30 at Cabelas. Are you in Canada? where it is 2F? I think today is a perfect day for hot cocoa and you tube gun collecting video's, no snow yet in metro-Chicago but it is coming.

@@Rjandrushko1963 North Dakota. Sun was shining bright, but it was waaaaay below freezing. A person could go "snow blind" but freeze like popsicle at the same time. ( It is now -6F ) You are in Chicago? Yikes! That is NOT a firearm friendly place. I got my Stevens .30-30 at a Gun Show a few years ago.

@@gusloader123 Yes, i live in NW Suburban Chicago. Living here is bad, I really dislike living in the peoples republic of Illinois. We have a condo on the Wisconsin river. 8 miles N. Of Wisconsin Dells. I love Wisconsin. U.P. Michigan and far northern Minnesota. I have never been to North or South Dakota. I'm told the pheasant and duck hunting is great !!

Kalashnikov was born in 1919. If anything, he stole the dust cover and saftey from the model 8. He definitely stole the FCG from the Garand. The gas piston was on several other guns. No disrespect to Kalashnikov but there really wasn't that much "new" about the AK. Sheetmetal receivers were already on SMG's, Etc.....

@USOG I’ve been loving your videos and was wondering if you could make a video going over JUST the Winchester model 70 POST 64. I’ve seen your other videos with a post 64 model 70 but you touch on it briefly, maybe also reviewing it but NOT comparing it to the PRE 64. Just a thought! Keep doing these awesome informative videos!
