Elk hunting is so difficult because every encounter can be so different. That's why using every method that reduces or eliminates failure points like lost handheld releases! I shoot a Carter evolution and a hinge also, but use a wise choice as well for hunting just to simplify which really is key at stressful moments. Keep up the good work and ABT!

Idk why everyone is upset about switching back to an index release. I’ve switched multiple times and the index just makes sense for hunting. Sure the thumb is the new thing and you can claim you’re more accurate. I went to a hinge and then developed target panic. Never had it before then. What works for certain people works.

I shoot a UV Hinge Original during the off-season for target, training purposes, etc… but I shoot a Scott Little Goose index while hunting, I customized my index with D-Loop material instead of a hard attachment to wrist strap. This allows me to use my middle finger for trigger and anchor/aim point is identical to hinge, same process pull through shot surprise brake; punch if needed in certain situations! Keep up the good work and awesome content!

If you’re going to run the Carters be sure to keep an extra spring or two in your repair kit. One thing I’d also recommend is not actually gripping the release. Keep your release hand relaxed. Watch Wayne Endicott shoot and you’ll see what I’m talking about. 👍

Yep, I walked into a clearing this season just before a ten point walked in at 40 45, he realized I was there before I could draw. Stared each other down forever, then he turned to keep walking and gave me a shot. If I had to look for a release or even try to get one locked on my string wouldn't have happened. I use a wrist strap with a hook. Just hooked on and drew on him.

Takes a lot to make what is arguably a very tough call, strong guys. I shot the RX-1 for years and loved it, still have one as a backup. Problem for me was I had to take my eyes off the target animal to hook it to the D loop, which I can do by feel with my Perfex. Both great releases, and as you guys say, we all have to do what works best for us, but we have to actually tinker to find out what that is!

Awesome video as always guys, have came to the same conclusion and have been very successful in the 2022 season… practicing with a hinge, and using an index for hunting. I did a side by side comparison with a solid rod (Scott talon) and a (b3 hawk flex) and noticed when it came to left and rights, the Scott talon did much better for me . All I can conclude is that when setting the triggers spring tension very heavy on a flex type release it moves around the d loop more while pulling thru the strap . Id really like to see you guys test this theory out and do some tinkering!

Index for the Win! Sometimes you gotta trigger punch when it goes down quick . When bull fever hits you, your effective range will be cut in half. If your not shaking when the 6 point shows up, you better give your tag to someone else who loves it more than you do! I loved my black gold dual slider this season! Easily sets to 20-40 and the gap for up close stuff.
@ericlind3569

Your first example is exactly why I never keep my release in a pants pocket. I was honestly surprised to hear you say you did that. Seems like a rookie move, which clearly you’re not!!! I love the Sitka mountains bino harness (I know you don’t) and it’s two front sleeve pockets on the front of the side pouches. They’re PERFECT for sliding a thumb release (I actually carry two, one for back up) in those pockets. It’s right there, no fumbling around. If you ran a Nock 2 It or Carter Wise Choice, you could mount an Ivory Holster’s kydex release holster that mounts to any Molle strips.

Give dual caliper releases a consideration as well. In low light situations they’re easier to hook onto the d-loop along with faster as well. I can hook in while keeping my head downrange to keep tabs on the animal etc.. Maybe accuracy isn’t as good, but dual calipers have been my staple for hunting.

Sweet looking release, I have always been running index for elk, I tried switching to thumb preseason before found similar issues, can definitely hook on faster, more efficient and with less over all movement with the index, and can max out my sight tape quite accuratly with it, so have stayed with it and got a bull down again this year with a fairly small window of opportunity

In my compound days(1990-2000), I was using an old school wide-jawed, index release; directly on the string. If I was in the woods and it was daylight, it was on the string and my wrist. Never saw a reason to take it off. My longest walk was only 2 miles though(in the East). I am jealous of the bows today though. My Jennings was 43 1/2" axle to axle at 83 lb with a 31" draw. Throwing 32" easton 2413s and 2512, resulted in slow rainbows...smooth, but very slow. I think the let off was 55%, so a deer freezing behind a tree sucked.

I went full circle starting with an index, spent close to thousands of dollars on different handheld releases from hinge to thumb button. Shot 8 holes on the shop walls, signing all of them…target panic was a “bleep”. I could not get that accuracy I needed for competitive archery. Contemplated hanging it all up, but the Pro I shoot with said go back to the index. I did and now archery is freaking fun again!! My scores have gone up dramatically as well. Currently using a Scott Little Goose, but have a Carter Like Mike 2 on the way.

Bringing back the triple stack sight? You might consider it. Sure is nice have 20-30-40 ready to go and being able to dial out when you have time. Advanced Outdoor Technology makes a mount to attach your handheld release to your bow. It's pretty slick. Another option is a wrist strap designed for handhelds. Tru-Fire makes one. Few options if the wrist releases don't pan out. Can't wait to see how everyone's hunts went. Looking forward to those videos.

I just switched to the B3 Hawk after watching Joel Turner talk about index releases. His son shoots one too. He put it up there next to the Like Mike 2 as you can swap out included springs to get a really stiff trigger. You can also adjust travel like the other releases out there but being able to set tension is what makes them unique. I can wrap right around the trigger to the second finger crease without it going off. From there I don't even pull the trigger at all anymore. Its just that pull of your wrist through the strap to get a tension release. I've gone from pretty substantial trigger panic to pretty confident shooting that way. The trigger finger just parks itself around the trigger and just holds that position. I've found the stiffest B3 spring a bit too stiff, sometimes you are expanding and it just will not go off and you feel like you can't draw your wrist through anymore. I have a pretty mangles scapula though and probably dont have the correct form and rhomboid strength to really pull through it like the good guys can. The softer spring is perfect for me. I guess the other positive of the trigger release is that you can punch it if you have to ie windy conditions. But with these new stiff trigger releases you can definitely shoot them by expanding through the shot.

I had malfunction with my nock 2 it at 17 yards on a bull this year, it went off at half draw and the arrow went over his antlers. the issue was I hadn't taken it apart and cleaned it since it was new and there was some grime in there blocking it from fully locking out when I clipped it onto the loop. but on thing you should maybe look at is the AOT release mount that goes on your bow, then your handheld is always right there for you to grab !

After getting the strap length set I throw a few stitches in it to lock it in place. Been using the Carter quickie plus for years. The thick heavy spring is just too much for me. I like just a small touch of travel, just enough to know my finger is in position. Luckily, I can switch from the Wise Choice to the quickie with no sight changes needed. Took awhile to work all that out but it can be done. Did it on 2 PSE bows and now the Elite Ritual. Another good video guys. Nothing wrong with experimenting- ABT

As an eastern whitetail hunter I grew up shooting fingers then a index release. A couple years ago got turned on to Dudley and switched to the knock 2 it. It's a great release was very accurate but always worried about where it was, then ran it over with my truck one day it decided to fall of the d loop unnoticed. Switched back to index and don't look back. I also believe a index is more user friendly when it gets cold and clothes build up (hood neck gator etc.)

Been shooting a nock 2 it for about 4 years and recently switched to the B3 hawk. I love carter releases but the Hawk is hard to beat for the price. Cheaper than the carter releases and just as solid of a strap. I could go either way index or hand held thumb release but I choose hand held for hunting. One, if you wear gloves it's a lot easier, I have accidentally set off the index while wearing gloves. Two, use a closed or clamp style then just leave it attached to your D loop, then it's right there. Third is they make wrist straps for the handheld so it would also have been right there. I just have a length of paracord on mine wrapped around my wrist. My two favorites are the Spot Hogg whipper snapper (closed/4 finger) and the Tru Ball max pro+ 4

I've been coaching hunters for over a decade to strongly consider the benefits of purpose driven release aids.. handheld for target, "wrist-rocket" for hunting. Not only does speed kill, but it's more likely that you'll misalign your peep and sight if you try to "shoot" or force a handheld release to go off in a hunting scenario than doing the same with an index trigger release, resulting in a bad outcome.

So I can change from thumb to index with zero change. My solution was I put my carter wise choice in the right side pocket of my marsupial bino harness. If it’s nasty thick spot of trees I hold it in my hand or put it inside my harness behind my binos. Haven’t lost one yet and this is year 3 of hunting with a handheld release. I do see benefits to use if a wrist strap and was honestly pretty jealous of my buddy who hunts with one so maybe I’ll dig my old one out.

Not only having the strap around my wrist always prepared while hunting elk or mule deer plus we have a camp back up if packing it’s in my pack. We have only used the back up because someone lost a part but never because it was left someone where because it’s on the wrist v

I have yet to buy a compound - just not in the budget at this time. Your thoughts on using a release with a recurve bow? Great channel. I trust you will get the subscribers.

5:55 try a PSE with 90% let off. The hold is crazy on my Levitate. In my opinion, that wall is wildly overlooked. Imagine being at full draw and flinching during that moment of truth. The PSE brute, drive, xf series, Levitate and Omen have felt very comfortable in that wall. I haven't shot the new carbon, I'd imagine it's similar.

Been shooting the index/wrist releases for two decades. I never bought into the hype on handheld releases ESPECIALLY the hinge style. I don’t care what anyone says you’re moving your anchor point around while operating the hinge release. Thumb is better than hinge. But I think wrist releases are the way to go especially for hunting purposes. Cam Hanes is a prime example, dude is the “ultimate predator” as he says and he shoots a spothogg wise guy. I currently shoot the same release as Cam Hanes, the wise guy, previously shot Scott wrist releases. I’m actually glad to see you guys getting back into the wrist releases!

Never got on the thumb or tension hand held releases. First and foremost a hunter, been using a scott samurai for 8 yrs. May upgrade setup next yr. But it's to convenient to have the release there. Can have free hands but it can be grabbed and ready to go quickly.

Love my SH wise guy Index release 🏹 one less variable to worry about when time isn’t on your side. If I was in a stand or blind maybe a thumb button would be cool but an index the all around easiest way to go.

I had two instances elk hunting this year where I felt the same way - took to long to get everything set in anticipation of an elk headed my way or close enough to make a play. I set up my chest rig with a pouch for my handheld thinking it would help speed things up. But like cold and wet hands, cold and wet pouches are not your friend at critical times. I have been concerned about how long it takes me to get set to shoot this last year and I may have to try going back to wrist style over the winter to shave off critical time in my favor.

I've been shooting the same scott's index release for so long i can't even remember what it was called, i think it might be a shark. I have replaced the strap on it twice and it probably needs a new one before hunting season this year. I have bought a couple of different kinds over the year but never hunted with them. Love that Scott. Probably got it around 1990.

Interesting switch. I have shot my last 4 archery elk with a Carter evolution. No issues in timber and quick, shot opportunities. This year was a running elk that I had to stop and turn and then shoot at 14 yards (after it stopped). I still have some indexes but the peep height change is annoying and hard to switch back and forth.

Ya that peep changing sucks - that's why I am going to set-up an elk bow with index and everything else bow with a thumb button! -DS

Advanced Outdoor Technology makes a great holster that mounts to your bow and it securely holds your hand held release. Easy to grab it and go. I’d never carry my release in my pocket. Give them a look. I have them on all of my bows.

I’ve tried a ton of different styles. For hunting…Winn Loop Hook and never look back. Gain 1/2” draw length. Less moving parts. Stainless. Reduces felt weight. Trigger adjusts as light as you want to go. Has never failed me…thousands of arrows and years of use. Not a big name, but unbelievable performance.

If you really want to improve the wrist strap game make a wrist strap out of diving webbing it does not stretch or move and is a real game changer! Feels identical to a hand held especially if its around the lower palm of your hand and not the wrist!

Been shooting this release for last five years. I shoot several other releases in the off season just to change it up, but then hunting season rolls around and I pull this release out. I will say the only issue is sand and rain seem to make it a lil sticky in the components of the release. Normally just a lil wd40 fixes the issue. Other than that it’s my go to release.

R&D Labs Overkill Tournament SS2000. Best trigger / wrist strap release ever made. Can be used with the index finger or fold the trigger in and use the thumb. And, has a button safety that can be held down during the draw cycle. Michigan machining company that just 'retired' last year. Absolutely no creep in the trigger regardless of tension it is set to. Can be used as a back tension release with consistent and repeatable break of the trigger. If you can find one, buy it and don't look back. You will not be disappointed.
