Huntington Ravine to Mount Washington | The Most Dangerous Trail in the White Mountains!

This amazing trail is considered the most difficult hiking trail in the northeast USA. The lower "approach" section and upper "alpine" section are not difficult, but the middle "headwall" section is where the route will test your mettle.
The lower "approach" section begins at the Tuckerman Ravine Trail and ends at the rescue cache in the floor of the ravine. This section is a gradual ascent on a rock-strewn path through the forest, paralleling and repeatedly crossing the stream that drains Huntington Ravine. Sights include many waterfalls, one cave, and distant views of the "headwall" section.
The middle "headwall" section begins at the rescue cache in the floor of the ravine and ends at the Alpine Garden Trail. This section begins with scrambling around, over, and under giant boulders in the floor of the ravine, then ascends a giant talus slope called "The Fan" before ascending the steep and dangerous headwall itself. Note that the headwall portion is so steep and sheer that it's basically rock climbing. Features include scrambles on large exposed ledges with limited holds, traverses across ledges, hugging a hanging boulder, and a narrow chimney.
The upper "alpine" section begins at the Alpine Garden Trail and ends at the Auto Road. Just before reaching the Auto Road, a left turn onto Nelson Crag Trail leads to the summit of Mount Washington. This section involves a gradual ascent on rock steps, following cairns and scree walls through the alpine environment. Note that there is no shelter from the potentially brutal weather, and the terrain blocking the typical strong northwest winds may lull hikers into underestimating the conditions. If there is any doubt about the safety of the conditions, and knowing that descending the headwall is dangerous, retreat must follow the Alpine Garden Trail either south to Lion Head Trail or north to the Auto Road.

Tips for people just getting into hiking:
Don’t do this hike if you are a beginner! Seriously
LNT - leave no trace. Meaning if you carry it in then carry it out and if you do see trash on trail try to carry it out as well to help keep these mountains beautiful and clean.
Do The Rock Hop - The Alpine vegetation is very rare and very fragile so when you’re on the summit of these mountains please only walk on bare rocks to avoid killing the vegetation!

My brother and I went to the White Mountains as complete backpacking novices 38 years ago in early May (ages 19 and 24). In planning the trip, I saw on a topographic map that there was a trail marked going up through Huntington Ravine, so I figured we could just HIKE up it, like you do on trails. We were quite surprised at how steep the "trail" was getting. The we came to a permanently-shaded snow/ice field in the V of the ravine, which seemed insane to cross, so scrapped our plans and started heading back down. But with our 65 pound old-school external frame packs, rocks were sliding our from under us all over, so we figured that wasn't going to work. So we used our old Rambo knives as ice picks and crossed the snow/ice patch on all fours. Started heading back up the rock...BUT now we were no longer on the route. Shortly after we started up, I was stuck on near-vertical rock with essentially nothing at all in the way of hand or foot holds, unlike in this video with great holds. With only 1/2-1 inch rounded and wet and slimy holds and 65 pound packs (and absolutely zero rock climbing experience), we were truly on the brink of death. Felt like we had one foot on the other side. Ended up taking us 3-4 hours to go about 80-100 feet up a cliff, where we eventually regained the route, which was a piece of cake compared to what we had just survived. I just went back to the top of Huntington Ravine this week with the family to revisit the site of the ordeal. Then found this video. This is really wonderful having a video re-creation of that area.

That’s insane. You guys got extremely lucky because all you needed was extreme winds and white out conditions to roll in quick and you’d be in even more trouble. Thanks for sharing! My friend and I have snowboarded a lot at Tuckerman Ravine and always played it safe. He got super close to falling into a crevasse on the ravine one day at the end of May, and we didn’t spend a ton of time there due to bad wind coming in. Mount Washington is an insane place just to be.

Now you all can see the “trail” that the rescuers have to negotiate when carrying a litter with someone who shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Shout out to all rescue volunteers and crews who do great work.

Huntington Ravine is hard but it’s definitely doable. The first time I hiked Mt Washington my father took me up Huntington’s when I was 12. I had no climbing or hiking experience, I didn’t even know what I was getting myself into. He’s a former Army Ranger 75th, and had been up the mountain a bunch of times. His wife at the time was 6 months pregnant and did Tucks then Boot Spur. I remember wanting to quit at one point and him just telling me- “we can go back if you want but just remember that turning around now will be harder than finishing”. It took up about 3 hours I think to summit and it was late July so all the snow had melted and the trail wasn’t as wet as it was here. The fog also cleared out towards the end so you could see the whole valley and just how high up you were which made things even more scary. I also fell into the water at the start standing on a rock while trying to take a picture lol. That said- if you’re a beginner this trail is definitely possible, as long as you’re with someone experienced to lead you. As long as you’re in shape you won’t have any problems but it does get sketchy at some points. For me- it was almost better not knowing the risk beforehand because if I did I wouldn’t have done it. Now that I’m 32 I’ve been up Huntington Ravine about a dozen times. We do it every summer. It’s fun to camp out at night too and start the trail first thing in the morning so you get a good head start before anyone else, then have the rest of the day to do whatever.

Very nice video, happy to see you enjoyed your hike. I have been hiking and skiing the Whites for decades. Funny thing is I had never heard of the terrible 25 until you. I did some of the T25 with a 50 pound pack back in the day. Thankfully today I am carrying a super light UL pack now I think people generally ice climb and ski Huntington Ravine. I am now retired and doing mostly long distance backpacking Long Trail, Colorado Trail but you have inspired me to maybe go back and hike some of my old friends in the Whites. I did the Pemi last year and really enjoyed it. You make great content, thanks so much.

Right around 21:50 where you say "We have to climb this!?" and then mention the "bypass", I went the wrong way and did climb up that little cliff to end up right where you're standing when you say "scenic overlook". Ok, I climbed and filmed this in 2010--this is why we need updates like yours--I think they rerouted the trail above the huge first slab, because I remember hard work and difficulty above it, but not the exposure you're showing(the trail was also much drier). When I GoPro a trail (e.g., the Chimney on the Knife Edge), I use the Chesty, because, unlike you, I need Both hands, All of the time! 🤣 Yes, Six Husbands is difficult, but child's play compared to HR, only one (former) area of exposure. Your videos are great fun and informative, and a real service to hikers.

Awesome video, thanks so much for vlogging this while climbing it! How does this compare to the Holt Trail on Cardigan? Obviously this is a lot more scrambling and way more exposed, but I'm just talking about the difficulty of the climbing/scrambling - that's another trail that's supposed to be "one of the hardest in NE" and is also Class 3.

Just did this 8/19/22... Thank you for not downplaying the danger of it... Some KZfaqrs definitely are trying to make it seem like no big deal when it is. The brook crossing rocks were submerged under 3 ft of water... If that is something people see it's an indication that it will be extremely bad farther on. The Boulder Field was intense but manageable but the slab had a 4 ft wide water flow on it that made the move crossing to the first handhold on the crack potentially deadly, the headwall climbing after was drier but still was about an hour of intensity with 4 big risk spots due to water. Again thank you for showing how dangerous this actually is.

@@BrianHikesAllDay yours was pretty much the best when I was looking for clips/vids characterizing the climb to pass along so that friends would know what it was that I was attempting and possibly so that they would not think me foolish for making a few contacts that I wouldn't have normally made to say things I wouldn't have normally said lol. I had done this in 2012 and knew what I was up to (up against)... Four people attempted it that 8/19 two turned around at the slab. My evaluation was that descending the Boulder Field and recrossing the stream five times was equal danger to the slab and I feel like that should be mentioned - especially when the stream was as high as it was. Nice work perhaps I'll run into you on the side of a mountain somewhere in the future.

Extremely well done, and absolutely deserving of the thumbs up. Looking forward to the Great Gulf video - that will be my final T25!

Hi Brian. Loved this video. Great Vlog. I'm curious....I saw that you also did Holt trail. My boyfriend and I did Holt a couple years ago but have not done Huntington. We wondered how they compare in regards to steepness and technical aspects? We are both fairly short at 5'4" and 5'6" and I know I struggled a bit on Holt at times because of that but we really loved Holt even though it terrified us.
@BrianHikesAllDay
@BrianHikesAllDay 2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s very comparable in terms of steepness near the top of Holt. There was some sections of the Holt Trail where the slide was so Steve I couldn’t even go up if I tried so the slide section on the Holt Trail was steeper than Huntington ravine slide but overall Huntington ravine was steeper but with lots of hand holds that make it feel safer

Just watched a few of your other videos as well. Great documentation of your hikes !! Well done I'm interested in approaching the T 25, but not sure if I have the stomach for it. Not sure if you are familiar with Maine, but the 'spiciest' hikes I've done are Katahdin's Cathedral Trail (a dozen times) and Knife Edge Trail (a few times). I do tend to get a little vertigo at a couple points on Knife Edge and end up 'hugging a rock for a few minutes' . lol You have any advice about the T 25, such as which trails to start with? Or how they compare with Katahdin?
@BrianHikesAllDay
@BrianHikesAllDay 2 жыл бұрын
I think if you do knifes edge via Katahdin you should be fine anywhere. There’s some very dicey sections on that. But if you want to go for easiest to hardest I would say the hardest are all the ones in the presidential range and north slide to try pyramid. I would do them all last. All the other ones are pretty good to start with

My hiking days are long behind me, but wanted to find out where Henry Bryant Bigelow died on this trail back September 19, 1931, after holding a ledge that came loose and falling on him as he tumbled 40 feet down. I hope there are some markers to let hikers know where the loose ledges are

Went up in the mid '70's - I don't remember it as being so overgrown. My most recent hikes were in the Bavarian/Tirolean Alps.... there, this trail would be labeled a "Klettersteig" and have cables and footholds. The footways are more even there, as the rock is mainly limestone that wears down - the Rockpile is largely made up of mics schist - the "Littleton Formation" that is very hard.

I highly recommend wearing approach shoes with a Vibram sole instead of random trail runners. They are super grippy even if the rock is wet (as long as there is no lichen) and make a huge difference for safety and enjoyment. Also, stow away the trekking poles!

I did Huntington ravine in summer, it was in the 80s when we started on the ground. Most of the way up I think thinking I might die of heat exhaustion, especially once we got above the timber line; then I was more concerned with falling to my death. ps.....it was my first ever hike of any kind, total novice.

@BrianHikesAllDay 7 күн бұрын
That’s a really good question. They’re completely different experiences. If you’re trying to climb up all the steep parts of the slabs on North slide I would say it could be equally as dangerous. You have a lot of opportunity to not climb anything dangerous by skirting around stuff on north slide so therefore north slide as much safer but if you try to climb up all the steepest way possible I honestly think I’d be a nerve wrenching hard to say, though man. They’re both amazing in their own way. North slide is probably my favorite trail in the whole New Hampshire high peaks.
