I believe all this was made possible by creating a standard subprogram with the adaptive circuits and magnetospheric warp compensators, while attaching it with a bioregenerative memory log module. It's simple science, really.

In terms of a distortion, localized means it's not spreading and/or it's boundaries within reasonable proximity to it source. Highly localized means that the whole of the distortion means it's smaller than would normally be expected of such an anomaly.

A story says Scotty (James Doohan) was going to a Trek convention, and he was to explain how Warp Drive worked. He made up a formula that looked great, but was apparently gibberish. So he thought. He did his presentation, and was stunned to be contacted some time later by real physicists, who asked him a series of questions about his formula. Apparently the eggheads/nerds in the crowd had taken notes, gone back to their labs, and started analyzing the formula. These were some top-flight nerds, who concluded that Scotty's made up formula was theoretically correct; we just couldn't build the damn thing!

diagnostic levels indicate how much of a disruption on the system the diagnostic will take, where level 5 is run a self check usually taking a few minutes, all the way to level 1 shut it down, physically check, and carefully reinitialize. The details of each diagnostic level and time taken change depending on the system being diagnosed.

The funny thing is that all of this stuff that makes no sense to most people actually has roots and bases in scientific and technological reality. Let's break down one phrase. "Highly localized distortion in the space time continuum." Localized: This means that it is not spreading. It is staying in one small area. If it was cancer, it would be called benign (technical meaning, "in a pocket or envelope.") Distortion: Generic term for something that has been changed or manipulated to the point of damage or unrecognizability. A deformation or disfigurement. Spacetime continuum: The idea that the 3 dimensions of space are connected to the 1 dimension of time, theorized by Einstein. Usually used when dealing with time travel. So, this is essentially saying that there is a small and very compact area where the very fabric of time, space, and it's boundaries are being distorted and damaged. Also, in the future of Star Trek, they have learned that there are many other kinds of radiation that are not EM radiation. Things like graviton, tachyon, deckyon, and chroniton all mean VERY specific things in the show. Graviton: radiated particles used essentially for pushing and pulling matter. The artificial gravity systems, tractor beams, and the holodeck all use them. Tachyon: a traceable particle that travels faster than the speed of light. They are used for many things that the EM spectrum is used for (weapons, communication, etc), and are also a byproduct of many different highly technological systems, such as cloaking devices and some warp engines. Deckyon: A particle that is known for it's unique relation to time. It has a natural resistance to events that cause changes in history and can be used to detect such changes. Chroniton: Possibly part of the same spectrum as a deckyon radiation, chroniton particles are mostly known for both their effect on, and their creation by, time travel. If chroniton radiation is detected, it almost always means there was some sort of manipulation of the time. Yes, these things are completely made up, but in the context of the show, they were consistent and made sense. There are VERY few times where what they said was completely nonsensical. As a person who has a higher than average understanding in engineering and science, there are almost no bits of "technobabble" in Star Trek that I couldn't explain and make it sound feasible. You just need a vocabulary.
