Overall I have to agree - perfectly appropriate for the theme but not what I'd have to call a "good" performance. At the same time that also improves its thematic qualities. The mental picture I get from hearing the gurdy first thing is sea brine and peeling lacquer. It sounds like it's on the verge of dying and is delightfully off-kilter from the start. That first impression provides the context for the rest of the song. This isn't gleaming hulls and calm seas, it's rotting wood and patchwork sails. Good job on the breakdown! I look forward to more like this.

Fascinating and so informative! Thank you! I particularly liked the footage of the gurdy used for the theme song, and your version with the double cameras. Very interesting indeed. As for sailors or pirates traveling with gurdies, I read about a French sailor who traveled with his gurdy in the 1800s (I think he was on a whaler) and when he got to port and went off to find a session, he opened his case and the poor gurdy was all in pieces because damp had made the hide glue holding it together fail. :) Not smiling at his distress, poor fellow, but at the idea of a gurdy surviving ocean travel way back then. There's a good reason sailors used fiddles, whistles and concertinas instead of more complex instruments- though I have seen a black and white image of a group of sailors with a hammered dulcimer as part of their musical endeavors! Talk about tuning problems! Anyway. I sure hope we get to meet someday. I would just love to hang out with you.

I saw a video where Bear was talking about how that begining part of theme came to be. He said the sound came from him tuning it, but also said that he's never been able to replicate the same sound since then.

That sounds pretty dying-y to me! 8:53 ... ah yes, the French Pastoral Cosplay period 🤣 9:15 ... if any musical instruments were taken along it more likely would've been something with fewer moving or breakable parts like a flute or fife... 10:35 ... you're right, not as a tune by itself, however it would be a fun "surprse" bit stuck between a few tunes... most street audiences aren't familiar with folk dance tunes and when you throw in something familiar they go "ahhhh!" During a brisk bourree set I break into Jesus Christ Superstar and then I get a lot of smiles and some extra money into the tip jar!! 12:50 ...
