In this video, I travelled to the Lake Huron region for the first time after a very unproductive October Steelhead fishing in the Great Lake of Ontario tributaries. Follow me to this picturesque and steelhead fishing heaven in Ontario. I will be using my usual float fishing setup with minor fine-tuning in the choice of beads I used.
Gears I use:
Rod: Rapala Concept Ti Float 11'6" 2-piece rod
Reel: Rapala Concept Centerpin 5" diameter reel
Line: Blood Run Mono 10lb Test in Clear Color
Float: Raven SM 3.7g
Tippet: Maxima Fluorocarbon 4 lb Test
Hook: Daiichi 1150 size 12 & 14

Nice intro shots and nice to see you land fish too. I've heard the tribs up that way have been good recently. Nice to see a fish on the bank.

The West coast steelhead must be way more massive. I guess you are not using 4lb test tippet like we use here, right?

4lb maxima is the same as 7lb rio the diameter is of a 4x tippet, I have read about this from many steelhead fly fishing that there is a big difference once you go to 4x .

Great video thanks for sharing. Do you run the split shot on your main line or a separate shot line, like this? Main line > float > Swivel > shot line > swivel > tippet > bait

Great video. Subbed. The last shot on you mainline supposed to be strike zone? Then 3ft of leader for presentation? New guy here..
@wisitchan
@wisitchan 3 жыл бұрын
Yes that is correct. The portion of the line with split shots are called "shot line" and it determine how fast and how deep your rig will fish. There are different "shot line pattern" for different water conditions but I always just use a standard pattern.

Great video! How long was your shot line? Looks like 3 feet as well. So you have a total of 6 feet under your float? I’m just curious because it looks pretty shallow where you’re fishing.
@wisitchan
@wisitchan 3 жыл бұрын
My shot line in this video is about 2 feet. The pool is not too deep and I was able to get my bead down to where the fish were with 2 feet of shot-line and 3 feet of tippet line.
@bogdanaciu6370
@bogdanaciu6370 3 жыл бұрын
That’s very interesting. You basically have 5-6 feet of 4 lbs test from float to hook in 2 feet of water. That goes against everything people say. Most would tell you to shorten the leader in low water...but this shows that a long leader is no issue when the water level is not high. I bet that’s the reason that you are getting them. You’re dangling 3 feet of light Fluoro with no split shots anywhere near the hook right where they are situated.
@wisitchan
@wisitchan 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is right. In order to fish a pool with 2-3 feet deep I adjust my shot line to approximate the Dept of the pool (in this case 2 feet). In my experience, I believe that longer tippet allow the small beads to be presented more naturally. Of course, there is also a question of legality, depending on where you fish, some only allow the distance between the last weight to hook to a maximum of 4 feet (i.e. the Salmon River in NY). That being said, I keep the length of my tippet pretty much standard at 3 feet 95% of the times. The only thing I will change is the length of my shot line as I fish pools with different dept. Hope this help you understand my setup Bogdan. Thank you for your question.
