We sailed by Carriacou last Saturday on our way to a slip in Grenada where we rode out the storm. Last summer we spent most of it in Tyrell Bay and were planning on doing the same this year. It really hits home to see a place you are familiar with so destroyed. The Cruising Community here at the marina sent a large care package on the ferry to help out until more organized relief can arrive.

what is obviously devastating is the building damage, which looks extensive, but is also disheartening is the complete lack of foliage now on the trees. the wind just wiped them clean of green... it's hard to watch and I hope everyone there can rebuild and live happy again very soon.

What was unreal were the eyewitnesses on the Carib Reservation on the northeast coast in Dominica with Hurricane Maria Cat 5 just before landfall in 2017..." the brilliant hues of blues and green in a boiling sky ... the lightning reached down to the ocean and ran along to the land where it caught huge trenches of forest on fire... the blackened and burnt sticks where foliage had been bore witness for months afterwards and not a blade of grass was to be seen as Maria pulverised every leaf into a fine misty green powder" such were the testimonies of those who survived.....

this footage is obviously intense and I feel for all affected. That said, I must say I’m so impressed with the percent of homes that survived and look barely affected. Islanders know storms are coming and build accordingly and even the boats while pushed inland or ashore aren’t really smashed to bits. I’ve been through many hurricanes, one that was a direct hit such as this and there was literally one structure still standing and everything else down to the concrete slabs…. Boats splintered and waterways blocked. I hope they get all the relief and help they need to rebuild their island paradise once more. ❤❤such a beautiful place

Keep praying, keep hope alive and have much faith. That night I saw death, I heard voices at 1am in the morning in the storm, heard kids laughing and talking, but there were no kids outside......my roof went before the eye passed over........and then came the backend and it lasted for about 6 hours..........was like Maria was searching for something, searching for souls, my 2 and half year old son I had to cover with a basin, we (4) took shelter in the bathroom which was the smallest room from 9pm till about 10pm when the eye was over us, I know what these people suffered I have been there and pray to God I never have to experience anything like this again............
