Enjoy another interesting video from the category of an old documentary. More activity on the channel - more videos that get to the top! 😉

What is astounding is , how slim and fit people were in 1988.

I was 4 when Hurricane Hazel came to Portsmouth, VA. We lived on the third floor of the building. Our next door neighbors had their front window break. My dad went up into the attic and brought my brother's train board down. He went next door and put train board into window frame with the tracks facing inside the room. He did this on the porch attaching to the window frame. The landlord had new window put in and brother got his train board back. Hazel came into the Tidewater Area the back way. I hope you enjoy this story.

these are all hurricanes from when I was growing up; Gloria totally trashed our yard and woods. This is a good documentary to remind people just how much hurricane science has advanced in the last 30 years (yikes, it has been that long, hasn't it). They get so much more data out of satellites, now using infrared, radar, and higher visual resolution, to see movements of clouds and temperature to monitor air currents, and sensors on the sea surface help by showing when winds, high or low pressure are altering suface conditions. Computer models have now pretty well worked out the track several days out, although Florida sticking out like a finger into the wind makes it tricky; the track can be almost identical and hit tens of miles farther north if it changes speed. Intensification and storm surge are the predictions that still need fine tuning, and even those have been pretty accurate since Sandy - the problem is people not taking warnings seriously, because they assume they're still as inaccurate as they were 15 years ago.
