#hurricane #idalia slams Steinhatchie #Florida with a huge storm surge. The Steinhatchie River looked like a raging rapid flowing backwards as boats and docks that were knocked loose smashed into bridges down stream. Homes and businesses flooded, many also damaged by strong #wind

Yeah, I wish people would think about that before they decide to drive on flooded roads to their impending doom! This is why the phrase "Turn around! Don't drown!" is repeated so much by meteorologists.

Back in the 1970’s in south FL. We had a 30’ sail boat. When ever a storm was heading are way, we would tie off to the dock, plus to something that was on the land close by, a tree, a cleat anchor to the concrete seawall, an like someone already said, drop a anchor or two. As you can see in the video, you can’t have too many tie offs.

@@Amethyst12thheaven Tying off a boat in a hurricane will almost always result in it getting totaled. If you owned a boat that you cared about enough you would move it either on land or to another dock that is out of the hurricane cone.

I pay 4x more for insurance for my old, inexpensive 43' boat as I did for my much more expensive house. The insurance company sets the price and I pay. They made an educated bet based on probability and sometimes they lose... such is their business. The insurance company has so many stipulations that they seldom actually lose. If my boat is damaged in a named storm of any kind my policy coverage is nearly nothing unless it is on land, has proof of being properly prepared and is tied to the ground with hurricane tie-downs. And they want to know the location it will be secured at when they write the policy. I use my boat and travel around so that is always a guess. Don't feel sorry for the insurance companies, feel sorry for the people who lost their dream or the people who had such a boat wash up in their yard and then have to wait for the insurance company to do their job and have it removed. The FL insurance issue is all politics.

Natural disasters have always been a part of Florida. The problem with Florida insurance is the roof scammers. I moved to Orlando, Florida in the last part of May 2013. 'Andrea' the Hurricane had hit, now downgraded to a Tropical Storm. 😮 It was Very Scary for me, another Nanny, and a little boy (he was only 1 year old). It was at a beach house, on Long Boat Key, that soon turned into a flooded beach house! Because of the wind, rain, and blowing of the water, we had to 'automatically' push a button, and metal covering went over All the windows. Flooding Everywhere!! Towels Everywhere! 😱 Scary! Ive never understood why people w boats dont take them somewhere safe. Travel away from storms. Why anyone would live so close to the water knowing the damages that will come. Its no wonder insurance is so high.

most don't have trailers, and they're not fast enough to get out of the way. Mooring them with the anchor and chain is the smart way though. See that red and white boat? still has its mast.

I bet those boats used to be able to go under that bridge with ease. Surge adds a few feet. I heard a report say the surge was 15ft in some areas. That would put those rivers and streams just under the bridges. Crazy.

@@keithwolfe3976 Gotcha. I hate that for the owners. This hurricane reminds me of Katrina. Didn’t think it would be this bad. I live in Alabama, and have gone through several. The last one tht hit Alabama was a Cat 1, but stalled in Mobile Bay and became a Cat 2. Storm surge was unbelievable w/ boats everywhere. Flooding occurred on bluffs w/ houses on stilts. It seemed to stick around and dump rain, also. Slow moving. This one seems to be moving faster?

If you have a boat and a hurricane warning and you don’t do your due diligence in keeping it as safe as you can, you may invalidate your insurance coverage…. With a significant warning, some of the smaller boats could have been hauled out and de stepped the masts for their protection. WOW -that storm surge is awesome!

" It is difficult to say exactly how many empty boats are out on the ocean that were washed out by storms. However, according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), there are an estimated 1.2 million abandoned ships worldwide. How are they not caring for their boys? The docks are floating away. Cat 4 hurricane. Not much they can do. Here’s a tip for you. Don’t be a victim of 1k a month. Put the effort and sacrifice in and go make more! Our life is rough and stressful because of our decisions, but our sacrifices also lead to a larger income. Half of which required no formal education. Good luck and find that boat of your dreams some day
