FOX 13 Meteorologist Jim Weber is keeping an eye on the tropics in the wake of Hurricane Otis. The hurricane went from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in a matter of 24 hours. He describes its intensification as explosive. According to Weber it was the strongest landfall on Mexico’s Pacific coastline. Weber is also watching Hurricane Tammy in the Atlantic, which has strengthened. He says the storm will eventually works its way into stronger winds and cooler waters, which will force it to weaken as it skirts the east side of Bermuda.
Get your tropical weather forecast each day during hurricane season from the meteorologists at FOX 13 Tampa Bay and MyFoxHurricane.com. We'll issue a new hurricane update each day, and more frequently when needed.

Otis made history in numbers of ways. We will be studying him over the next decade. He could be a sign of things to come with explosive intensification.

There was a hurricane in the Atlantic about a month ago that went from cat 1 to cat 5 in 24 hours that never hit land, but it is another one that exploded in intensification.

As someone who lives on the gulf coast, this is honestly terrifying as hell. I didn't even know that was possible, obviously we've seen storms ramp up in a short amount of time. But tropical storm to cat 5 within 24 hours?? That's just insane! All I can think about is future hurricane seasons when a storm comes in, will it happen to us? And it's a matter of when, not if, at this point.

Otis is like the younger sibling of Patricia, both grew to immense power in under a day. But while Patricia had the fastest winds in a hurricane ever at 215 and nearly had Typhoon Tip's pressure at 870 (Patricia had 872), Otis became the first Cat 5 to make landfall ever in the East Pacific. Unsure of the pressure of Otis (edit: just checked he had 932 millibars), and his winds though deadly aren't as terrifying as he could have been.

Ottis was terrible. At 8 pm was barely raining at 11 pm winds went crazy and at 12 am the real nightmare begun 😢 i am sure the death toll is way bigger than our government will ever admit. It was so terrifying even though ours house is well shielded by other neighbor properties it was so damn scary... it almost rip our gate apart like it was a paper sheet for two hours or more my dad and I were holding the door like a multitude of people were trying to come in all while the wind was singing like a person for a moment I really thought someone was singing with a track music as background and all... scary

Otis had wind speeds of 165 while Patrica had winds of 215 with gusts of 240. It just didn’t hit land while it was that strong because it went through its transformation while far away from land. Otis blew up as it was coming on land which caught that area off guard so they just simply not prepared to all of a sudden deal with a Cat 5. The center of that storm probably hit some extreme warm water for it to change that fast. But like I said Acapulco had no time for any evacuations or anything before it hit which is why it’s so devastating.

Don’t listen to the nincompoops. The US government admitted back in the 2005 than they played with the weather. The were telling everyone, including those affected by Hurricane Katrina ( 2005) that they diverted the hurricane from slamming into NYC and sent it to Louisiana. These people probably don’t even know they are being poisoned by their food, don’t bother to read labels and aren’t choosing healthy alternatives. We live with only some 70 years of accurate more comprehensive data. Humans seem to think that the way the world is right now, or the way they think it is, was the way it has always been, no change, no ups or down, until this very moment when we see a weather event. We forget the was a little ice age at the end of the Middle Ages that has never been explained, that the earth at one time was totally covered in Ice, or had massive volcanic eruptions for thousands of years, or was warmer and more tropical, and all with out human influence.

If Unprecedented means "never happened before", then what happened this time that's so different? Watch the real estate market. BlackRock loves your country, but you're ruining the view.
