I'm a former building inspector, and I thought the same thing the moment I saw those high rise condos with that type of damage. Horribly poor construction methods. I'd be looking at the fastening and anchoring details, and I bet there was a lot done improperly if not missing entirely from original construction or subsequent remodeling.

It's really bad when it just sits or moves slow. I live in Ohio close to the Ohio river. When Ivan hit in that area it moved right up the Ohio Mississippi and then right up the Ohio river. When it got here the winds were not horrible but it just sat here for a damn week and rained, and rained, and rained. we were all flooded clear up here. I never imagined hurricane flooding where i live but it damn sure happened.

Now that weather patterns are changing, maybe we need additional info in the hurricane categories. This one was only a category two storm, but the rain fall and the flooding have done damage on the order of a category three or four hurricane. Maybe they need to find a way to express that danger in the category numbers, so people don't underestimate the danger of a category two storm.
