I was living in Miramar, Florida. We had no water damage, but the winds did extensive damage to the area. The eye of the storm went right through where I was, and I'll never forget the surreal experience of walking out of the house, seeing clear skies, only to be hit by severe winds again about an hour later.

The second half was worse than the first.. I was living in Boca Raton when it and Hurricane Francis hit, lots of structural damage.. The one hurricane that Is most burnt into my mind is Andrew, as I was living in Homestead when it hit.. I remember being hunkered down in our bathroom with my family as it went over us ripping off most of our roof, but I will never forget how surreal it was going outside once it had passed.. I could not even recognize our neighborhood because of the devastation everywhere; We were lucky that we survived because many of our neighbors did not...🙏

I went through Wilma east of you in Deefield. It was mainly a wind event than rain. In hindsight, it didn't seem that bad. Irma did more damage to my house than Wilma did.

I was in Lake Worth during Wilma. My daughter was born August 26th and I was a bit nervous when the storm hit us. It was traveling North Northeast from the Southern West Coast. The front of my house faced a lake. It was wide open. I remember my front door banging hard when a strong gust came through. Just north of me was Palm Beach International and I believe the wind gusts at the airport were 125mph. We lost power for 3 or 4 days...but it was cool and dry and slept like a baby.

One of the best films of Wilma...I had my apt on 315 Williams street....I lived there for 10 years and never left for any Hurricane....Wilma was the worst...The storm surge we got came about 8/8:30 in the A.M.,,,I was sitting on my up stair front porch...28 feet long by 9 feet....I was having coffee when the surge started up Williams st. By the time I got down the side stair case the water was coming up through the walk way decking....it came up to the second step to the front porch....that was it....my store over at the Galleon Resort was about 2 to 3 feet underwater....Williams st. was higher ground. I had a generator on the porch and I had power....but the power was only out for about a few hours...I guess living on the route on Caroline street to to downtown was a god sent...I walked around old town for a few hours...looking down Eaton St. it was flooded about 3 to 4 feet. I realized the other side of the Island got hit really bad. From your film I could see how bad it was....I also worked for a friend tearing out old sheet rock and redoing it and texture and painting so many houses. I did not open the sun glass shop after that storm....Good film....enjoyed it....I don't remember anyone dieing....Of course the locals never leave....the Conch Hotel was the only place open...all the reporters...did get breakfast there....I will never forget that storm.....

Thank you for this including how the now gone La Concha was always used to broadcast these reports. I resided in Big Pine Key at the time and remember getting into an argument with my EX about staying or leaving and packed the car up and insisted we drive to central Florida to stay with family. I found out later that everything we didnt pack in the car was destroyed from the flood when he returned before I did and try to retrieve our belongings. It was quite a sight driving back weeks later to see so many boats struck in the mangroves, a gambling cruise ship stuck out there as well , and to see all my belongings on his mother's porch in smerf village lined out to dry an to try salvage some of it,but were gone.

My husband and I were stationed at Homestead AFB when Hurricane Andrew happened in 1992, destroying the base. We're from the Pacific Northwest so we've never been through any severe weather like a hurricane. This video brought back some memories with the high wind and realizing how we (my husband and I) we displaced and lost everything we owned. Hurricane Wilma wasn't quite as strong as Hurricane Andrew, but that's a good thing since the guys who did this video were out in the storm.

I was on Majesty of the seas during hurricane Wilma we got a 7 day trip that was a 11 day trip .We were in 30 foot seas for 3 days,we could not go outside .The captain assured us that the stabilizer were extended out.It was the best cruise we ever had,no one was sick I was amazed by the fact that it wasn't rolling around .At my home in Hollywood FL.power out for a week I got home and the power returned in a 15 minute time frame. My advice to everyone if a Hurricane is coming I am on the first RCL TRIP ON MAJESTY OF THE SEAS.That was the best vacation I ever had .The Captain was so skillful and I was better of at sea than land.I see the stories how terrible people were in just bad weather saying they were so sick and how terrible it was in rough seas much less a hurricane for 3 days .If I started out the window I would feel sick so I chose not too look out at the horizon we stayed drunk along with others I did not see one person sick.We all had the best time.We received awards when we docked in Ft. Lauderdale that we made it through Hurricane Wilma. I am not making this up and we had a Highly skilled Captain so next time you see a Hurricane is going too hit book a cruise on Majesty of the seas.

A reminder (if any were needed) that there are still forces human beings can't control or come anywhere near controlling. I've been reminded similarly but in less devastating ways when watching volcanic eruptions. Even small-scale they are awe-inspiring. This is excellent footage and a timely check on humankind's hubris.

I am always amazed at the beauty of the keys and other barrier islands up the coast, but I do not understand how people risk so much living on the coastal plains. The one thing that is absolutely assured is that a strong hurricane will visit and cause complete destruction. I love to visit, but have too much respect for nature to have my home there. God bless you all.

There is a whole lifestyle down there that the residents would not be willing to give up. It's gorgeous almost all the time, and there are quaint little shops and restaurants dotted all along the main streets. Pretty much every other retail is for diving equipment. The town couldn't thrive without local residents. Though honestly, I'd be more scared living there than I was growing up in South Dade county.

@@johnmann1285 Don't misunderstand. I was not referring to coasts in general, but rather specifically barrier islands. Living along the coast if perfectly reasonable, as much of my family has done for decades, even with an occasional storm. On the other hand, a barrier island is a very big risk, as a medium to strong storm leave you with no means of survival by essentially putting you in the middle of the ocean during ravaging waves and winds.

I remember I had just started college at Miami Dade community and they canceled the first part of the semester due to no power. It was so surreal. And yes thank God for the cold front. I remember the night after the storm since most of Miami had no power you could see all the stars in the skies. Also almost all the trees in my neighborhood were knocked over. Not a fun month....

because in almost all of reportable history, we've never had a storm surge like this, nor one from the north. The Keys are protected with a very long reef a few miles off shore, with shallow water between the reefs & islands. So when a storm approaches from the south, it gets weakened by Cuba, and also from the shallow water that prevents most of the damage you see in other areas. I went thru too many hurricanes in Key West & didn't evacuate during Wilma. Remarkably we had power back in 2 days, Publix reopened (it was the only elevated store, I believe) and even hosted "evacuees" from Broward County since we at least had creature comforts while they did not.

Anthony Baruch No. No you wouldn't. You have plenty of time to prepare and evacuate with a hurricane. With a tornado all you get is updates on where it just touched down. You get tornado warnings on the crawl at the bottom of the local news channel. They break in to show the thunderstorms path, but no predictability. Everyone heads to the innermost bathroom (pets and all) to wait it out, day or night. I haven't experienced an earthquake. I've been through a few hurricanes and several tornado seasons, I choose hurricane. There's plenty of advanced notice to prepare and evacuation is always an option.
