- This is kind of a story of where I've been, to lay the foundation of where I am going. -
After hearing both Trent Reznor and Johnny Cash tell their story through this magical song in such different yet equally as powerful ways, I wanted to see if could tell it too. Singing this song turned out to be a very cathartic opportunity for me to talk about the darkest time in my life. Vulnerable, intense and desperate. It was important healing for me to acknowledge how awful I used to feel, because it paved part of the path that lead me here.
ON A LIGHTER NOTE my first album, 'To Build a Sea' is on it’s way to tell the full story, in my own words this time, of the last 6 years or so or my life. 6 years of paving stones. A path of confusion, excitement, frustration, anxiety, numbness, acceptance, serenity, joy and eternal hope- told through music with just as many genres!
---
Lyrics (slightly different to the original in parts)
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focused on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
For me to let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of shame
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
That I just can't repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
But I am still right here
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
And I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Holy shit.. Look, I've never heard of this artist before right now. But as an old dude who spent his teen years in the mid 90's listening to this album on repeat, I can honestly say that she did an absolutely incredible job with this cover. The challenge of doing a cover of an iconic song is finding a way to make it uniquely yours without destroying the essence of the original. That's even harder when there's already TWO iconic versions of that song. Somehow she nailed it too. The tremble in her voice absolutely sealed the deal. I don't usually give out this much praise but I'm honestly quite shocked right now. Great job.

@@LolliWren @jvoxfox both two great vocal coaches. Its great that teachers appreciate each other and no childish competitive crap exists. I've seen that positive appreciation with other coaches too & in these times of mental challenge of life its exactly what's needed, including the odd joint song discussion together which I've seen. If fact would love to see a "Vocal Coach verse and chorus swapping Christmas & Summer sing and chat extravaganza Because well fans of one coach tend to be fans of others because you're all unique, talented and typically lovely human singing beings but with many common observations. You could do a virtual get together of afew of you and then a physical get together of songs and even a "youtube tour". Just an idea Thank you Julia and Lolli

You've done it When you first reacted to this song you brought up the fact that JC was able create a cover that he really related with. One that almost seem "written for him" as a means to portray what this song means at his stage in life. Well you have done it. This doesn't sound like a JC cover. It doesn't sound like a NIN cover. It sounds like a song written for you in this stage in your life. Thus proving that this song is really written for us all. A fact that is beautifully disturbing. Thank you and congratulations on a job well done.

In watching your other channel I've come to deeply appreciate your empathy. Your reactions are a treat to watch because you are very honest and open with the emotion that music invokes. I've long thought that music is just emotion given voice, and so it speaks to all of us. Sometimes it is joyous and sometimes it is bitter, but it's all emotion, and that is a universal language that we can all relate to. Thank you for adding another dimension to this song through your experience and emotions! It is beautiful, sorrowful, and I love it. I'm torn between feeling the pain and loving the talent. The variety of your technique for this song was a delight. I didn't expect the shifts after hearing the previous versions being sung in a single style throughout. It was refreshing and surprising. I never cared for the original, I loved Johnny's cover, and now I have yours to enjoy as well! If I'm ever fortunate enough to cross your path I want to shake your hand and say thank you so much for what you've given me through music and analysis.

What can I say? Such a masterful performance of a very personal & beloved song. Lolli Wren's vocal & stage craft are incredible. She brilliantly embodies the soul of the song. I remember with fondness when NIN released the instant classic "Downward Spiral." It made an immediate impact in the Alternative Music, Industrial, Goth, Punk & Metal world's. It shook everyone to their core beings, including myself, of course. 30 years later, it still reverberates with great appreciation. Bravo Lolli Wren! Much respects!

I apologise for this comment not being as short as it should be, but I've watched this several times now as I wanted to really take everything in. I don't know where to start but this is such a triumph of a project. Both musically and in terms of accompanying video. It is careful and considered in its structure and execution. It's seemingly the perfect choice of cover for Lolli as it allows for a progression to be shown in her vocals and affords her the opportunity to share her ability and understanding of technique. The video pairs so well with it also. Only two, perfectly chosen, sections of the video feature direct eye contact straight into the camera lens, which I thought was so impactful as visual punctuation. The story of the video hints gently at a possible narrative without distracting from the song and you cleverly chose to remain tight on Lolli for the majority of the video so that her performance is captured. The emotion and drama of it all simply amazes me and I need to listen to it again. 😂

As someone who personally relates profoundly to both the NIN and Cash versions of this song, this was no easy task you took on here. Hello Gorgeous! 🥰 Wow Lolli, this is another beautiful facet of the FVM. It was never unexpected because your vocal coach role always hinted at a far greater depth of understanding than was immediately obvious from some of your FVM analyses. What did catch me by surprise was just how much pain was conveyed in your singing and your expressions. The desire to reach out and hug you was unbearable... anything, anything at all, just to bring you some comfort. Your vocals are, of course, impeccable and with a few more songs in your catalogue, your distinctive voice will become known to me in a wider sense. I adored this rendition of a well known song and you will not be surprised to learn that you did it great justice. The forthcoming album is a treat that I do not want to miss and I look forward to it with great excitement and anticipation. 😍

Wow wow wow I got floored in the same fashion you were with your Cash reaction. This is really special! I absolutely adore how the CHS was treated dark and so impactful and what do you say to someone who moves you like this except thank you.

I've never heard you sing with your voice so far forward as you did with a large part of this; Really created several distinct techniques away from your speaking voice which was surprising and very captivating. I really like what you did with the song. I feel like it's a voice lover's exploration of what can be done and the changed chords suited the surprise of this very well indeed. You're going to break a lot of hearts with this my dear!

I could feel your attachment to the lyrics in this song...not sure what the connection is, but it hits deep with you. I loved it, especially when your voice changed to the light and almost fluttery sound, like you were fighting back the monster wave of emotion. This was like a musical war between you and your past pain. Brava

Lolli, I love and follow your fairy voice mother channel because of your reactions… I was CLEARLY remiss in not following your musical productions. As soon as I heard this rendition of this song, I immediately added it to my Spotify playlist: SIMF - Self induced misery fest. Hauntingly beautiful. Masterfully crafted. Thank you for your personal take on this song.

This song have many versions and covers. And I love how you still made it your own, clearly telling a story. Of how the lyrics have meaning to you.

Lolli, this was absolutely incredible! Never thought a 3rd version of the song would hit just as hard, yet still totally differently. I also like the artistic choice of changing the line to "crown of shame", much like Cash changed it to "crown of thorns" in his version. Gives it a bit of an homage to that version. Absolutely amazing!! 👏👏👏

This was a musical wallop straight across the face in a weirdly wonderful way. Jonny Cash´s version is now my second favorite.Simply sublime.

Being a huge NIN fan, and this being one of those songs that you feel was written about you, it was wonderful to hear a female vocal version. Painful to hear in the right way. Would love to be one of your patreons but people who work in cancer care aren't valued financially in the UK. If you ever get the desire I would love to hear you review "Cop Syrup" live at Barrowlands Ballroom, by Biffy Clyro. During lockdown Biffy, erected cubes at Barrowlands, and each stood in their own cube. So they didn't break social distancing, and did a live gig of their new album. Which Cop Syrup is on. Love peace and light to you, I love how viscerally you feel the pain in songs and aren't afraid to show it. ❤
