Since HER parents apparently died, HIS in-laws didn't cut ties with him. I'm guessing HIS parents, HER in-laws, were the ones who cut ties with him. And since SHE is selling HER parents former house, it must be HIS parents' house he was turned away from. But I guess hiring an editor who can read English must be too expensive.

The writer/narrator often tend to refer to the spouse’s parents as in-laws regardless of who’s parents they are. This is a common error made in these stories.

John's parents are NOT his in-laws; his in-laws are his wife's parents. High school students studying English would have that correct in their translation to English
