The term "Four Stroking" can be confusing when talking about 2 cycle engines but its really just the sound the engine makes when its getting more fuel than it needs. Listen to what it sounds like. #smallenginerepair

Great tips Scott. You are absolutely right about customers starting their equipment, especially in cold weather, and expecting it to rev up smoothly and cleanly. Opening up the low screw to drop a few hundred rpm on the rich side is the way to go! Later!

Noice! It’s interesting to think about how tuning a trimmer and a chainsaw are a bit different because you want a saw 4-stroking before it goes into the wood so when it’s under load it has enough power to cut and leans out during the cut. Did I get that right?
@TheGreasyShopRag6 ай бұрын
Yep. A trimmer just isn't exposed to the same high loads as a chainsaw.
@tomasznumrych71876 ай бұрын

Does the thickness of the string matters or only the length when adjusting the H screw. Thx
@TheGreasyShopRag6 ай бұрын
I would say it only matters if you're going to change the thickness of the string after the adjustment. I think the answer is yes, the thickness (weight) matters.

Great explanation! I’ve done saws and trimmers the same. Lately tuning saws on idle and trimmers on high, then final adjust. Your thoughts please. How do you start/set fast idle screw?
@TheGreasyShopRag6 ай бұрын
I adjust chainsaw low speed on bench, go out and adjust hi speed in log then adjust low speed as needed. I then let the saw cool (usually overnight) and retest cold start.
@steveriggenbach906 ай бұрын
@@TheGreasyShopRag I do trimmers hi first then low. Also set fast idle screw at middle of taper. Not sure if best way
@TheGreasyShopRag6 ай бұрын
@@steveriggenbach90 If you do Hi first then Lo, you will have to go back and adjust Hi after changing lo. At full throttle you are pulling fuel from all sources. The lo never shuts off so changing it will slightly change the hi mixture. How much? Not much. Try firing up a string trimmer then open and close the low while at full throttle. Does it change?

Some canned fuel seems to run like your customer presented that trimmer. A bit rich is way better than a bit too lean if you want your tools to last. I think you had concrete saw clean and re-blade as the interruption, the 4 stroke guys are leary of your ire bu now. ;-)

Concrete saw was going on rent but needed a different blade. During test run I discovered it needed a new pull rope.

Hello Scott, I really apologize for asking so many questions but I'm doing my damdest to learn more about this business at 56 yo. I work for a Stihl dealer but have numerous Husqvarna's that come in such as chain saws weed eaters eetc.I need to order a variety of fuel lines to accommodate the different models. We have home owners and numerous professional saws. We're in MS in a rural community where logging is big. Could you please advise which size fuel lines you would order and brand or anything else you advise. Thank you so much for always responding, take care brother.
@TheGreasyShopRag6 ай бұрын
Many pro grade saws use pre-formed lines so those aren't an issue. for everything else we use a selection of line found here: www.oregonproducts.com/en/search?q=tygon

OK, here goes: during the break you had a concrete saw rental return because it wasn't running right. Different tools came out and in the end you diagnosed a plugged screen and needed the torch. Alternate: the four stroke guys came over while you were distracted and made a mess. You had to use the saw on the floor to start it up and pretend to cut them to scare them off.
@TheGreasyShopRag6 ай бұрын
Plausible but not correct. We had a concrete saw going out and I had to switch blades. The torch and scissors were for replacing the frayed rope i discovered during test run. Thanks for playing!

I always enjoy your videos, but on this one I heard but did not get an explanation of what four stroking actually is.
@TheGreasyShopRag6 ай бұрын
As I understand it four stroking is when the cylinder is filling with more fuel than can be cleanly burned and scavenged. I guess I've always used it as a reference point but never gave too much thought as to what is actually happening.
