Bruce, Jerry The PA Lawn Nut, It looked like you used in several videos a still pribe to clear the fuel jet. In aviation carburetors we can only use soft brass probes if ultrasonic cleaning and filtered compressed air do not clean it. The concern is scratching the inside diameter and changing the flow characteristics. Maybe this jet is not as critical. I have cleaned these jets on mower carbs but with the aviation methods. Had to clean one on a husqvarna this spring and free the exhaust valve which was sticking open with carb cleaner. It was a Honda engine that sit with treated gasoline for two years. No shame for the engine or the gasoline. We are back in PA, retired now and I can take care of the equipment now.
@BrucesShop7 жыл бұрын
I understand the reason for a softer probe. Since the EPA (on the American side) have been mandating smaller orifices I am not worried that a small scratch will increase fuel flow. I have put some thought into this and I am actually reaming out some of the Honda jets if the motors are surging (Honda motors are the most surging ones) and there is no other reason I can find for surging than fuel starvation. They are after all mostly mowers or other garden equipment that was destined for the landfill. I am happy aviation maintenance is taken so cautiously. Thank you so much for your informed comment. Truly appreciated.
@jerryf24267 жыл бұрын
Bruce Pender Thank you for the response. The serging engine is polluting more than a properly running one with a little larger jet. I tend to think someone just needed to justify their sallery so had to come up with this smaller jet opening and it was accepted up the chain. I think I would just open the jet when one of these repairs is needed and do the environment a favor. Ever smell the unburned fuel of a lean burning engine with an induction leak? People do not understand that, but have smelt a good many.
@jerryf24267 жыл бұрын
One question, in aviation the smaller the jet number the larger the jet opening and hole the diameter the reamer makes, is this the same with small engine jets?

Ok I am a self taught, back yard,small engine mechanic. I do know about Bernoulli’s principal and atomization of fuel but the sizes are something I deal with on a machine to machine basis. Sorry I am not an engineer just like I said earlier just a self taught back yard small engine mechanic,

Self taught is great, we have a repair facility of trained tech that was trying to fix a cyl. that went dead and caused afterfire in the muffler every 40 minutes of operation and my brother in law would let it set to the next day and mow another 40 minutes. He bought a new mower. When I heard this I said that is an exhaust valve sticking. Sure enough there was a dense mouse nest over the exhaust port on the one cyl. that caused the valve to stick when it became overheated. The worst thing was the repair facility had the cooling shroud off and never saw the problem. I am sure you would have. Oh well, my brother in law now has two quite nice mowers and only needs one. Maybe I will inherit the one someday. Love your videos!

I think Husqvarna calls them a High wheel Trimmer but they do have a brush cutter attachment along with the trimmer. Sold plenty of them when I worked for a hardware store that also repaired small engines. Thing that wears out on them the most is the small cup on the bottom of the trimmer due to people resting the machine on it while it is running. Nice vid Bruce.

@@BrucesShop Bruce, I now have a weed eater again...it was great. The gas in the weed eater was a dark yellow & smelled nasty like varnish. I dumped out tank & didn't clamp of hose before taking off that cup with the fuel injector in it. So, I got that nasty gas that was in the fuel line on the weed eater housing. It was ok, I cleaned everything up. The cup was full of dirty gas & what looked like dirt or other contaminants. I cleaned everything just like you did. I put everything back together. Made fresh gas with the ethanol out & filled the tank. Pressed the bulb 3 times & to my surprise it tame to life. Your video save my weed eater & me from buying a small worthless weed eater. Yes the valves on those L heads (flathead) pounds down the valve seat. Causing the valve to be closer to the tappet.

Yes regular lead free but here in the colonies they put 10% ethanol in it which causes issues on small engines.

Do you know if they make one of these that uses a fuel pump and an oil pump so they can be used on hills? I recently bought a Cub Cadet walk behind weed eater and it would stall on hills and sounded like it was starving for oil. Pretty sure it was because it used a gravity fuel system which is useless unless you yard is completely flat.
@BrucesShop5 жыл бұрын
No I don't think the Briggs and Stratton has an oil pump. The newer OHV engine may have an oil pump. I am working on a John Deere walk behind that has a blown motor as the previous owner was cutting grass on ditch slopes.

I you use ethanol gas in it and you left it over the winter, or more than four months, I already know the problem. I winterize mine by running it until it stops running. It still didn't start! I took it back to Lowes because it was still under warranty. They were going to make me liable for up to $120 in repair if the problem wasn't covered by the warranty. It's back home-I'll figure it out.

I can't say I've ever had much problem leaving regular gas with ethanol in the gas tank from one season to the next but since watching your vids and others I've switched over to only using non-ethanol fuel. As far as I know only Shell sells ethanol free but but you have to buy premium.
@BrucesShop7 жыл бұрын
We can get ethanol fuel here by just buying premium.
@BrucesShop7 жыл бұрын
Canada
@gr74857 жыл бұрын
Yes Canada. I'm wondering if humidity can also be a factor. Where I live the air is quite dry year round so that may be why I've never had a problem with water accumulation in the fuel. The other reason why I use Shell premium is all of my Stihl products call for premium gas so if its ethanol free then its a one stop win win.
@cedarwings827 жыл бұрын
Petro Can is all ethanol free. That being said I noticed a Shell in PEI it said the regular fuel may contain up to 10% ethanol which I thought was weird as I thought all Shell was ethanol free. Even double checked next time I went.
@gr74857 жыл бұрын
Don't know about PEI but out west (prairies anyway) the only fuel Shell has that's ethanol free is premium. As for Petrocan out here all their fuels contain 10% ethanol. I have a PetroCan not too far from me and all the pumps have the yellow ethanol labels. From what I was reading on their web site who gets what depends on "where legislation requires its use and where conditions warrant". They didn't elaborate.
@ZippoVarga7 жыл бұрын
The presence of Ethanol on the fuel is what causes this gelatinous goo to form. Little known fact. Ethanol is kept in a separate tank until it's mixed at the pump at gas stations for this very reason. The new "ethanol" doesn't play well with petroleum based products. Not to mention, Ethanol draws moisture, which causes premature degradation of the carburetors in the form of aluminum oxide, another deadly by product of Ethanol. (did you see my video dedication to you that I posted yesterday?) Cheers my good Northern Friend! Zip~

With all due respect, the goo is from neglect. Start your engines on a regular basis, or at least my experience is all i can attest to and you will NOT have that problem. I have a 15 year old self propelled mower with briggs engine that has seen ethanol in it since it came out. Same with 10 yr old riding mower. Never any issues like this because they get started on a regular basis. Most people probably will not do that for whatever reason. I'm 60 and as far as I know carb kits and cleanings took place from then to now , way before ethanol was around. Any fuel that sits is gonna degrade over time and cause issues. My personal opinion is , that if you are gonna let your equipment sit for months and months without running it, either fun it completely dry, or at least use a fuel stabilizer then HOPE for the best. As far as water in the tank, I remember seeing it as a kid in the tank. Why? The mower was outside with a wash tub over it , as we couldn't afford a storage building. Kind of reminds me all the additives sold to put lead in the fuel (substitute for it) when they outlawed that toxic stuff. When engines are made, they know what kind of fuel is available, and really I don't of any that says ethanol free only. Some of the small engine folks say you can use it,,,, but capitalize on selling either a stabilizer or a ethanol free fuel in a can at what to me is outrageous on the price for someone that uses any significant amout of fuel at all. Then the best price for ethanol free fuel I've seen is around 40 cents more per gallon. No big deal i guess if you don't have to drive out of the way to get it. Others I've seen, sell it for as much as buck more per gallon or more. So I'll just keep on doing it my way until I'm proven wrong. And certainly my deepest respect for Mr. Pender's and Zip's opinion. I love their videos but just disagree as I know they do with me. That's ok. I still thank them for their videos as it teaches many many beneficial things for the DIYers out there like me.
