This is just a quick video showing another ride on mower electric conversion. The process is pretty straight forward to do now that I have learned the basics and performed multiple conversions at this point.
The only real components needed for this conversion is a donor mower, motor, contactor, key switch, fuse and emergency on/off switch. The rest is up to the person converting.
Showing the my new electric conversion and a quick demo

Looks like you are the only one on YT who did is as right as can at best cost. Terrific, hope it lasts for 10 years or more with the battery and electronics. Don't overheat it!

Do you know, if there's any benefit to using the fly-back diode and pre-charge resistor on that contactor, when there's no controller? I learned it was for protecting the controller, and am also running an ME-1004 riding mower conversion, direct, without a controller... but do these two small electronic components offer the motor any protection, or the batteries?
@JerryRigged
@JerryRigged 2 жыл бұрын
I personally have not noticed any benefit from them in this configuration... As a matter of fact, mine get warm/hot in this configuration. They were left on from when I had a controller connected

Thank you for doing this video. It is ver informative. If you could do another build, do you think the 8kw motor is enough? Or too much? I am considering converting a Cub Cadet zero turn mower, but don't want to underestimate the power needed.
@JerryRigged
@JerryRigged Жыл бұрын
I think the motor is just about perfect for this application however, I would get a 14s or 54v battery minimum to power it. The 12s 50v is just a smidge slower then I would prefer the blades to be spinning. I know GMC released a later revision to the Chevy volt to have a 16s battery module... That might be overkill but I'm sure that extra voltage would be a nice power boost.
@Perfectionist01

Thanks. I was considering a 48v power pack consisting of Headway batteries which have a 300A potential, but can scale up to a 72 to accommodate the higher demad. Do you think adding a speed sensing controller would be useful?
@JerryRigged
@JerryRigged Жыл бұрын
@@Perfectionist01 I think that is a big power jump, it would probably be a good idea to have a sensor and some sort of delivery regulator in that case. Some hydrostatic drives heat up with increased input speed.

Where can I find info, read up, on how to repurpose a Chevy volt battery like this. Taking advantage of the onboard BMS, finding connection points, pin outs, as required etc... That's a big weight savings over lead acid.
@JerryRigged
@JerryRigged Жыл бұрын
Honestly I could not find a pin out that was valid. I had to use a multimeter and determine the order of the cells by continuity testing the leads to the top of the battery. Then I was able to create a balance lead that could be used on a generic RC car charger or any type of balance board.

I know this video is 2 years old.. but would you say that it's still working great without the controller? would this setup work with 4x 12v 100ah lead acid batteries?
@JerryRigged
@JerryRigged 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it works wonderfully. 4 lead acid should work but you'll need to monitor the voltage drop to determine longevity

Nice work! Is this a hydrostatic drive mower?
@JerryRigged
@JerryRigged 3 жыл бұрын
yes, the hydro takes the jolt away from the starting movement. The older manual models do work though they sometimes cause the front tires to lift off the ground with the instant torque that an electric motor provides.

Nice Build, looks good 👍 👌 You mentioned it still uses the Original Hydrostatic Differential, My Question : does it still have a reverse with your conversion? 🤔
@JerryRigged
@JerryRigged Жыл бұрын
Yes, the hydrostat has gears inside that flip direction for forward and reverse based on the input lever. The motor direction does not need to change.

@@JerryRigged I thought so, I just recently serviced my Tuff Torq K46 Hydrostatic Transmission on my Husqvarna Lawn Tractor, (YTH2648TDRF) as this Diff is used on many Ride-on Mowers, Husqvarna, John Deere etc. I just wanted to confirm it, Thankyou 😊🙏👍👌🍻 Important Note - what Husqvarna doesn't tell you in there "so called" service manuel is that this Hydrostatic Differential needs to be serviced at "50hrs then every 200hrs" (this is stated by Tuff Torq - the manufacturer themselves) (Oil / filter Change & clean magnets in diff) I Love how massive companies don't disclose this critical information !😳🙄 A Shorter Lifespan means another sale for them, it's pretty sad / pathetic & very sneaky way to do business. (I think anyway.) I thought I should let you know, I would hate to see that Awesome conversion gathering dust because of a premature worn out Diff. That Electric conversion may be something I would consider doing also in the future👌👍 How much approximately did the Conversion cost ?🤔

Hello, I am thinking about converting my mower because I am sick and tired of the loud noise. Can you say by how much this conversion is quieter than as the old gas setup?
@JerryRigged
@JerryRigged 3 жыл бұрын
It is quieter however, it isn't "quiet". The blades do generate noise when rotating. The pulleys under the chassis also make noise.

@@JerryRigged Thanks for that quick answer. I am aware that all the Others components still have their operating noises. I am from Germany, I would have to get the motor from the states. I would like to build a lifepo4 100AH 16S battery pack, could you maybe estimate what kind of runtime that could give?

I followed all of this but use a zero turn john deere. I'm having a problem lately, it stops no power then about 10 minutes of wait its good to go. Until today after 10 minutes in only ran for about 30 seconds it cuts off. Wait for 10 m😅minutes to run 20 seconds. Battery still have 90% in it. Have you had this problem on yours? And what did you find out? TIA

Assuming you are not using a controller, I would check the main contactor. Sounds like a short in there. Also, check that the leads are crimped well and without corrosion starting. I've had corrosion build up between connections and cause a connection break if the load is high. If you have a BMS and it's wired inline, check the amperage being consumed. BMS boards will cut power if it exceeds the rating on the BMS.
@JerryRigged
@JerryRigged 2 ай бұрын
Also, since this is new behavior, check the drive belt and blade belt. Check the pulleys, if the bearings are going bad, a higher load would be expected
