Use to help cutting firewood for a Ole farmer where I hunted on his land for over 35 years. He once told me "You do not have to GOT to do anything" . --- Was talking about what I got to do when I get back home. Those words still stick in my mind today. Took a lot of self made pressure off myself. Thanks for your Vids. Enjoy watching someone else work - Especially splitting firewood. Retired now. Love all.

I remember 50 years ago splitting wood with my dad. There are a lot of life lessons in splitting wood. I could never remember which end of the log to split on when you had a tapered round. But my dad came through with a lesson I will never forget he said Son you start on the small end of a log and the big end of a woman. After I picked up my jaw from the ground I don't know who was more red in the face my dad or the 10-year old kid looking at him. Lesson learned and never forgotten.

I just remembered that Eric has recently had his right knee replaced and he is moving around marvelously. Not as much flexion as the left knee, yet, but getting there. Sure wish Kenny would go ahead and have his done. After having each of mine done separately in 2022 is such a gift. Went from takin 600mg ibuprofen twice a day for 10 years to nothing is such a blessing. Almost certain that I never would have gotten my first one replaced without my daughter’s encouragement. Not preaching, merely encouraging. GNI

nice splitting maul. nice of them to send it to you. then again, you use pretty much all husky saws, you wear their merch and with all the subscribers, its a no brainer to send it to you. i use my Fiskars x27 every now and again to split a few rounds if they aren't too big. it does a good job. like you said its pretty light but the speed you can swing it makes up for the weight. looks like someone forgot to lock the horizontal pin....lol. i have a craftsman 27 ton splitter that does a great job but it is..... S L O W...... probably about the speed of that one. thats good for me because i can keep up with it....thanks for all the videos Chris. I look forward to them every day.

@@InTheWoodyard with one guy running the splitter I would only have to split 8 hours to match 12. If you’re only splitting real small wood than maybe not but if you are 12 inch to 16 inch than yes. Chris...I used to love my 16# Sotz Monster Maul that purchased in 1977 for $24.95 delivered. You had to swing it overhead (as the instructions that came with it recommended) or it would tear your entire upper body apart. I was 6'7" and 240 and with someone setting 18" red oak pieces upright I was much faster than a hydraulic splitter of the day (late 70's early 80's). All you had to do was get the wedge moving overhead and let gravity do the rest. The shear shock of the momentum and wide wedge "blew" red oak and cherry apart up to about 24" diameter. Beyond that and it was the old sledge and wedge. My son now uses it to split several cords every winter. Oh to be young again!

I haven't lifted a splitting tool since the 60's as a pre teen. Dad always made me put the rounds on another flatter piece of wood , As a back stop of sorts to keep from splitting the ground and maybe damaging the blade of the axe. I don't see that in almost any wood yard vids, these days.

more like soft ground absorbs shock that's needed to split wood. also brings the impact level up so you aren't reaching. I am one to prefer an 8 lb dull maul over an axe. axe cuts so sharpen, splitting mauls don't cut but split, the first thing I do to a new maul is find a rock pile so the maul doesn't penetrate the block and stick

You guys that grow oak and maple got it pretty easy when it comes to splitting.............not kidding. You would not or could not split "big bark" cottonwood rounds that long or big unless it was below zero outside....... Cottonwood is full of water, until it has been dead for a couple of years or has dried out, it is a challenge to split with an axe. (or splitting maul) Of course this drivel is all my opinion.

I love my husky splitting axe. Crazy sharp, even after several seasons use. I still haven’t sharpened it. Most of these are made by hultafors or hults fors bruks (sp?) and I’ve heard some may be gran fors bruks. I can’t imagine fiskars being in the same league, but maybe they are.

They are made by Oschenkopf (Oxen Kopf or Ox Head in English), the German manufacture 👍 (the one in this video is anyway, I think you are right about Hultafors for the other splitting “maul” they do)

Fiskars is a lot cheaper and they do break but by returning it to the manufacturer you get a new one for the cost of shipping it back. I had one that I split 150 full cord with before it broke. A wood handle will never last that long.

Thanks for the video! Been looking for a review of the Husqvarna Splitting Axe all over the place for a while now, and there are literally NONE on the internet, yours is the first I’ve found! Would you use this in addition to your X27, or is it too similar? Trying to work out if I buy one as it’s got a wooden handle, as I sometimes find the X27 gives a bit much vibration back through the handle. The stickiness and extra weight you mention don’t sound as practical for long sessions though...? 🤔
@InTheWoodyard

They both work great! They are just different tools. The Husqvarna is heavier and will work great on tougher rounds but the x27 is lighter and will work great for longer splitting sessions for you. I say...get both!

I have a fiskars splitting maul. I like it. The axe tends to loose its edge as compared to the Gransfors Bruk which holds its edge much longer. Since the cost is so high for the Gransfors I will stick with the fiskars. Anyways I need the practice is sharpening the head :-). I have always like splitting wood with an ax. It almost zen like. BTW have you ever come across fat wood? I like to use those hallow sections on the camp fire. Its like a jet engine on after burners:-)
