BMX was so big in the 80s. I remember a kid riding a Redline on my local track. Wether it was him or the bike? He was fast!! I was just a poor kid riding a Huffy.

I still have my OG trick star. All that remains is the frame and forks but it's still cool that I've managed to hang on to it. I have a small collection of bikes. After the hutch faze I got into HARO and stayed with them. That and SE. SE is probably my most favorite bikes of all time. I've got a 90s area PKRIPPER. I would love to have a Quadangle again.

First off great video! I still have my Trickstar from 1985 all chrome I paid $500 for it I got it from a friend who didn’t like it so I jumped on the deal 😊 I’m think of possibly selling it in the near future as my kids don’t want it 😢

I still have my near 40 year old Pro Racer. 1984 was probably the peak year for BMX, and then freestyle started to take off. It was a great time to be a kid. Thanks for the video.

Absolutely, I competed back then later being sponsored by MCS prior to billy and Kevin redirecting their sponsorships from MCS to GT through Martin back then. I was only a state medalist in Florida back then in the expert classes but I absolutely loved the hutch trickster better than any other bike in history. I just felt that the trickstars were way better than any other bike on the market back then. Unfortunately it was never brought back from my home in Colorado back then. I have not priced them out for some time now but would like to buy one again without question.

Great video! I caught Woody Itson and the rest of the Hutch freestyle team as they passed through my hometown (Goldsboro, NC) in the mid 80’s. Hutch was one of those bikes I always drooled over. However, in the end, it was the GT Pro Freestyle Tour that I brought home. I still have the frame, fork, and a few other smaller parts in my garage though the rest of it went missing over the years. One of these days I’d like to get it back together.

Honestly, I didn't know Hutch existed when I was growing up. I only knew of Mongoose, Diamondback, Redline, Skyway, Huffy, and Murray! I only had a Huffy Space Invaders bike i wish I still had.

Wow, it’s hard to imagine knowing all those brands and not ever hearing about Hutch. But they were so expensive that not too many regular kids had one. So while they were hard to miss in the magazines, most kids didn’t see too many out in the wild. That Huffy Space Invader was a cool bike!!!

MY FAVE BIKE, OF ALL TIME! I'm 50 years old, and always dreamed, of owning a Trickstar, but, couldn't afford one, I owned a Hutch Excel (blue), and Hutch Windstar (white), I had GT Performer (blk), and Haro Sport (red), but the Trickstar, was my fave.....btw, I own a blasted pink bike now, in tribute to ITSON

The notification for this comment didn’t give me the context that this was under someone else’s 24” comment, so I thought you meant 20”. I don’t think there are plans for a 24”. They are doing a 26” in this upcoming release though…

I asked my Dad for a Hutch Trick Star frame & fork on my 14th birthday. So my birthday finally comes & my Dad told me to go down the basement where I found a brand new chrome Hutch Trick Star frame & fork with a red bow on it. All my friends thought I was crazy because I only got the frame & fork but in a very short time I had it all put together with parts off my nickel plated Mongoose & never looked back. I was hanging out on the corner with some friends & an old friend of mine picked up my bike & rode away with it. He was so high that when he finally came back he didn’t have my bike. I went mental & screamed “where’s my bike?” & he had no clue. It had been days when finally my Dad asked where my bike was & I told him the story. We went immediately to the “friend’s” house where his Mom had no clue where he was. That friend finally got so burnt out that he was put away from his drug abuse. No more bike for me but now I ride Harley Davidson & still to this day I miss my old Trick Star

Unfortunately dude sold that for drugs. I had a Gt Mach1 and a haro sport stolen and sold for drugs. Oddly enough these bikes plus yours is still out there. Hopefully one day they’ll resurface.

I saw Woody ride one in 85 or so! I wanted one of these a the time, but I settled for a lavender CW. By the time I had my own money to spend, rolling tricks and axel pegs were the thing and I bought a Dyno. Today I have a 2018 26" Lineage Master designed by John and it is quality at every detail. It rides amazing and I have been riding it for four years and it still pretty mint. So him being involved should be great. If you still have your GT, what was likely not right about it is the cruiser bars. Those of us coming from 20" bikes have to get rid of them right away. I just got a white 26" GT and as soon as I got those bars off it was a different bike.

Good stuff! This was huge in my area. I never had a Hutch Trick Star though that is a sweet ride. I did, however, have a beautiful yellow GT Pro Performer...and I miss those bikes & those days.

Great stuff, amigo. I just found your channel and so far I'm digging it. This was my era for both BMX and skateboarding. I started racing BMX October "80, but was riding a bunch before that. August '81, my gramps bought me an SE Quadangle frame for my birthday. I still have it. I've been considering building it back up in a more freestyle configuration to mess around on. I am now 59, but thats never stopped me. Anyway, great stuff and I'm looking forward to watching more!

Both my Trickstars came from Jacksonville Fl. My first one came from North Jax Schwinn which was a local store that me and 5 other guys rode for, doing flatland demo shows around north Florida. I wanted a pink one but they couldn't get one. They ordered me a Futuristic Black one and I was stoked the moment I laid eyes on it. It was a frame and fork, ladder bars, stem, seat post clamp and everything else was from my Haro Sport at the time. I want to say this was 1986. Then 2yrs later I am at KONA Skatepark and find a Lavender frame and Pink forks on the wall in the pro shop....CLAIMED! Still have them both. I put the black one together for my 50th birthday and did some tailwhips and lawnmowers for old times sake. Glad I found your channel I am digging it!

I won a Trick Star frame and fork from Freestylin' Magazine back in '85... and as a kid in rural New Hampshire in the mid 80's, I definitely didn't get the pink vibe, but built it out all the same. Was a great experience all the way around. Gave it to my nephew in the early to mid 90s, and don't know what happened from there.... crazy to see how much they are going for now though. Thanks for the video and the trip down memory lane. Stay well

Still have my 1986 Trick Star. I need to install some new parts though as the the headset is a bit loose. Got some replacement mags a few years back but other than that, it's still a great bike. A few dents and dings but baby blue as ever.

Just found out there is a huge collection of old BMX bikes just about 10 minutes from me in Richmond, VA at Powers BMX - Look up Powers BMX Museum Tour - owner is Chad Powers. I am stoked and going to visit soon. Maybe I’ll take my Trick Star over for fun.

I remember the candy apple red Hutch bikes. Had too get a new BSD Safari frame in candy apple red 🤙🏻 the 80’s were great! My first “real” Bmx bike was a 84”-85” Redline 500A series 3. Loved that bike. Though the new stuff blows the old technology away. Awesome stuff 🤙🏻

what a killer story!! I was just telling another channel about how I got my lavender trickstars from hutch's newer production shop on ponca st I believe they were out farther in Pasadena off Richie hwy but pretty sure was right up from fells point. it was almost 40 years ago but mine was my treasure. couldn't afford the gold and chrome one. totally best bike ever had!! great video my friend! cheers

@@midvalleymexicans4167 Buultjens said he’s going to Taiwan early March to see the production samples. If all is well, I don’t know how soon they would start production. My guess, and this is only a guess, is they’d start production in a month or two and maybe have them done by end of summer. And then a month or two to get them shipped to the US warehouse. So if I had to bet, I’d put my money around October. All speculation. Hopefully Buultjens will provide some updates after his trip.

Great video however I’d like to add that hutch was born from profile. The hutch pro racer was designed by profile racing and gifted to Richard for his birthday. The pro racer was a profile racing champ pro with a couple design changes. The drilled out hutch seat stay bridge was designed by Corey alley. They also made the cranks for hutch, haro and gt.

Thanks for the feedback on the edits. I had a lot of fun making this video. Yeah, and the GT’s weren’t cheap either. I eventually was able to get a Dyno D-Tour because it was about $100 cheaper than a Pro Performer. A Trick Star was the pipe dream of my pipe dreams 🤣

@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood I couldn't afford either one when I was a kid. I saved my paper route and birthday money to buy a pink Leader with white mags. It looked sweet and worked well but it wasn't a Dyno, GT, Haro, Hutch, Kuwahara, etc... I bought an Odyssey Drainpipe seat post which was too small so I used a sleeve and it would still slip a bit...especially when I was doubling lol. I have a '99 Dyno Compe now (with Reissue Pretzel Bars) but it's no '87 Detour🙄

i get a serious 4130 looking at that pink trickstat frame ; thats hot . lol . i had only one hutch , and i loved it , but my gt pro racer fit me better. a mafia kid on my block , his pop bought him the black w all gold anodised top racer by hutch , whisch was the lightest on the market at the time - it was ridiculously light and FAST and on the first day out, punks were trying steal it from him and the father found out and kicked the shit out of em right in the street . mid eighties , queens nyc

Just curious, does the small tube that connects the top tube to the head tube, actually passes tru the down tube, or is a two piece made to look like a single piece.

The major flaw with 1st gen freestyle bikes is they were for the most part made from a race frame design perspective. As freestyle advanced, tricks progressed, the demands in equipment went through the roof…the original frames started to fail. In my opinion, resilience and geometry were the end for 1st gen frames.

I have hutch tim judge white redline rl 22 haro master blue and grey forks are chrome haro master with bash guard was red and chrome now just chrome and and SE quad angle white got them In The 80s when I was a teenager and lots of other components skyway tuff 2s graphite with gold gonna get tires and ride

I don’t know what year they peaked in popularity, probably 1984 to 1986. If you were into it much after that, they weren’t as prominent in the magazines, and were done by 1992.

We used to call them Trick Bags because anyone who bought one new got duped. It was Cooks Bros and JMC at that price point. Cant argue with the Hutch Beartraps though.

Facts? My understanding is that the Kastan RL-20ii's were made in Mexico, not the USA. Regardless of any grumpiness in the headquarters, the buyers were frustrated by the repeated delays, repeated missed promises, and terrible communication from Dom... over the course of 2-3 years. Thanks for chiming in. I thought I got the facts right... unless you don't trust Woody Itson. 🤷🏼 What I said is from Woody himself, as he shared in a BMX Hall of Fame video post. Here's a quote from Woody over on the 23Mag website, "If you look at the first prototype type frames me and Buff rode, that's what "they came up with" and I was bummed with it and told Hutch that's not what I asked for. When you see the production version of the Trick Star, that's what I came up with with the help of an engineer at Hutch. I spent a lot of time on the phone with people at Hutch and flew out there almost once a month in the early years. I also came up with the name Trick Star. That is how it went down. If you check all the earliest photo's from the earliest magazines it backs up what I'm saying 100%. The engineers I dealt with at Hutch were great people and very supportive and without them there would have been no Trick Star. However, without me, you wouldn't have the Trick Star you know today."

That's a fair question. The new ones are priced to be in line with the last of the Haro Lineage bikes. There seems to be enough people willing to pay the premium for these to make it worth producing. But I don't think they would sell enough to compete in prices with the mass produced, less expensive stuff from the modern flatland brands today.
