This one covers how the bushing type bearing fails. This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. If you have suggestions or comments they are welcome.
If you are a homeowner looking to repair your own appliance, understand that the voltages can be lethal, the fuels are highly flammable and high pressures are used. Know your limits.

My Friedrich wall a/c motor seized. Took it apart expecting ball bearings and found this bushing instead. The felt material was dried up providing no lube. This was after 14 years of use. I was desperate to get a/c running again (middle of August heat and humidity) so I oiled the shaft then packed that space with bearing grease. That was last year and it's now July following year. Still working but fingers crossed; I keep listening for any noises and squeaks!

Last summer had a condenser fan motor suffer a bearing failure. About an hour on a lathe with a piece of brass we had a new bearing. It might fail tomorrow, or last ten more years, but got them through the hottest part of the summer.

I swapped the end bells end for end and got the motor working. The drive end most always has the most wear seeing it is pumping something. Another symptom of worn bearings (when not a capacitor or start relay issue), the motor simply hums as it is not centered so magnetically unbalanced forces are working on the armature.

Dang, I really need to know what that oil-absorbing pad (aka packing) is made of so that I can replace because dry pieces of a very similar blower motor sealed bushing pad(aka packing) blew away when I was using compressed air (dumb) to clean up that area on MY motor. Day & Nite furnace here - very similar to yours. No furnace we buy today is going to last decades.

@@grayfurnaceman Thanks, i will try to find some felt. Apparently, there's some stuff called Permwick that looks interesting. Moleskin might work; my mom used a layer of it on the bottom of knicknacks to protect the coffee table and fireplace mantle in the livingroom. Nevermind...scratch the above. I stole some moleskin from a lamp bottom, cut in strips, and stuffed into the oil well around the bushings, soaked in oil, and all is reassembled and ready for reinstallation tomorrow. Found a forgotten papertowel in the turbin which was causing noisy imbalance. Should be quiet now. We'll see.

@@grayfurnaceman Thanks. I tried prying, but it wouldn't give. I ended up sticking mine inside a 3" tube with the flange ears sticking out over the ends of the tube, then smacking the motor output shaft. My original GE Fan motor lasted 25 years, probably with no maintenance, before the bushing seized. That's not a bad run.
@gavincurtis
@gavincurtis 3 жыл бұрын
@@ArtHeld You got a winner, probably because the manufacturer cared enough to put actual oil packing material in your motor's sleeve bearings. Properly oiled sleeve/bushing will run forever. Modern throw-away garbage is what we get today though; you get what the oil-lite bushing can hold and that's it.
