honestly AMD deserves credit for having GPUs named in the single digits (Radeon VII), double digits (Vega 56/64), three digits (RX 580 etc.) and four digits (RX 6600 etc.) in the last 10 years alone, and not even in ascending order because that would be too predictable and boring. Also massive kudos to them for having a CPU and GPU sporting the same name (7800) at the same time, but somehow the one ending in 3D isnt the GPU. One can tell they really try their best to be as consistent and transparent for customers as possible.
@user-to7ds6sc3p
@user-to7ds6sc3p 12 күн бұрын
To be fair, the 3D part is actually logical. Because it uses 3D Cache technology. Suffixes being a bit cryptic is to be expected, they cant start putting whole sentences into the product name.
@DigitalJedi
@DigitalJedi 12 күн бұрын
The 7800XT is a hilarious GPU name when you consider there are also XT series Ryzens from previous generations. They were higher-performance versions of the X chips, which would have also been used to describe the X3D chips considering the relationship between the 5000X and 5000X3D parts. There is a dark alternate timeline where you can build a PC with a 7800XT and a 7800XT.
@laceflowerhw
@laceflowerhw 12 күн бұрын
@@DigitalJediThe X3D comparison is only the case for gaming loads - and it should be apparent that people use CPUs for things other than gaming. XT CPU variants are strictly higher clock speed versions of their counterparts, which X3D parts definitely aren't. You can totally built a system with a Ryzen 5700 and RX5700, I wouldn't suggest it though
@DigitalJedi
@DigitalJedi 12 күн бұрын
@@laceflowerhw Yeah I totally get that. I'm just trying to say that they already had that suffix around on CPUs and could have reused it. The 5700/5700 PC is a good one, and it's little brothers the 5600/5600 and 5500/5500 can also be built. I had a laptop for a while with a 6800HS and 6800S for the CPU/GPU setup as well. AMD naming gets weird.

@@philippengl2342 Oh, for sure there'll be something, but even if it's more than "give it a firm twist", it'll be so small that it'll definitely break during intense / passionate moments, especially in the hands of someone stronger than us nerds who watch every GN video 😉 (yes, I'm using the stereotype and there are plenty of exceptions, but I'm an even weaker exception). For it to have the strength for 99% to not have a problem, it would be too expensive for 80% of prospective buyers. Now, if they made it an open standard, or even a cheap license, it would allow for cheap parts that's easily replaced (but likely wasteful) and fine for gentle types through to tough modules for vigorous, strong users who can invest in critical modules where the most strain is focused.

They're actually pretty good. The architecture is... weird and the "low performance" is definitely architectural at this point(it won't hit it's theoretical numbers in gaming). But the gaming cards and flex cards are the same(barring things like the flex card that is two arc chips on a single PCB) and are GREAT for virtualization. They're also their XESS cores, which are great for NPUing it up. They already shed a bunch of stuff(cancelled projects circa 1-2 years ago), but I'd bet on ARC as an ongoing thing as it stands. It covers GPU, datacenter GPU for serving out virtualized GPU output, transcoding, neural net processing, etc. Their AIB vendors are mostly locked in as well(Sparkle, Acer, and Asrock in order of "friendliness" to Intel)

17:22 As a owner of a Nvidia Shield Tablet, to this day it's a sleek device, the controller was odd but worked, and generally just fun to use as it was just stock Android 6. Just wish it was a 64 bit system, because the 32 bit was the kicker. After the battery issue (expanding battery) , the entire platform died and the Switch came out and Nvidia pivoted to the Shield TV anyways. Hopefully MediaTek and Nvidia could pull something off, and possibly to higher standards to the original Shield Tablet, but that price is something...
@boxhead6177

The idea Jensen is upset with Nintendo seems odd, since the Switch 2 is going to be a chip hungry launch. Silly to be angry at the largest supply agreement you have. I think Jensen is more disappointed that they didn't get offered to build the Steam Deck/ROG Ally APUs. Like they need to build a mobile gaming PC to prove they are the better choice.

@marktackman2886 I never had the clamshell shield, was very odd device. The 8 inch tablet was pretty decent, all things considered. The stylus was a nice touch, the games it offered, the speakers facing out from the fromt made it 10 times better than many devices in that era, and the free but limited GeForce streaming experience was nice. Yeah the battery issue was not great but then again 2014 was the year of exploding and expanding batteries. For what it offered, the build quality was adequate for the use case of the 8 inch tablet, and I personally never had issues. Like I mentioned, possibly a next iteration could be held to higher standards.

As much as I bagged on Intel on the CPU side when they were stagnating after Sandy Bridge, I'm pulling for them to succeed at providing a compelling product in the GPU space. My last few cards have been AMD because I haven't been willing to pay the Nvidia premium, but there's no denying that AMD has lagged on features. Intel being competitive will hopefully goose AMD to continue putting out quality for value as opposed to just pricing their cards at Nvidia price minus X%.

The thing is, since AMD is pricing so close to Nvidia, the Nvidia cards being more stable and actually having widespread support for machine learning makes them a better purchase imo. I've been saying this for many years, but AMDs complete neglect in machine learning will be their downfall. Edit: and I have much more faith in Intel prioritizing machine learning and productivity workloads than AMD.

Competition hopefully improves things. less so when there's not that many competing in the first place. Still, I'm also hoping for Intel to succeed in this, even if it's only mid to low end. (Maybe especially, since that bracket isn't really a thing these days)

Comments from people like "I have no intention to buy AMD, I just want AMD to drop their prices so I can buy the nVIDIA GPU I want cheaper" that were everywhere over the past 5 yrs don't really help when it comes to competition generating lower prices, because why should AMD bother lowering prices when people openly admit they will not buy your product anyway. Also the number of comments in discussions that have said "I will never buy AMD because the risk of Driver Instability" then going on to say "Even with Game Breaking Driver Instability we should support intel GPUs so there is competition, Intel will be our Saviour" Why wasn't that ever the case with AMD??? at release intel ARC was not cheap but more expensive than AMD & similar price/performance to nVIDIA (even more expensive than nVIDIA down here in Australia), they had to slash prices to make them AMD Competitive. & past indicates intel doing exactly the same as nVIDIA with CPUs when AMD were struggling with FX where intel prices went up drastically while design & performance stagnated. As for AI personally I don't understand "Oh it's OK a 4060Ti performs worse than 3060Ti in some Games because you just use AI to increase fps" or dodge insufficient VRAM, to me that is just Fucking STOOPID especially as not all games support AI, I want an ACTUAL Generational Hardware Performance Increase especially when it comes with a $$$$ Increase.

I don't even need one for accessibility reasons and I'm thinking of buying a set of those cubes if there aren't major durability issues with them discovered. I'd LOVE to be able to 'build a bear' a controller layout. Especially if the software is present to provide additional mappings for duplicate modules or whatever.I mean, stick a decent gyro in one module and you can straight up make a custom flightstick. There is a LOT of potential there.

It's awesome to see new accessibility options showing up in games and gaming interface and peripheral devices. Especially ones with such versatility. And measurements and starter 3d files are a huge deal. It's absolutely fantastic news. It's a just shame that the low volume and extra production complexity for specifically accessible products causes the cost to be out of reach for many that would need it the most. Full disability isn't exactly lucrative for setting up any decent gaming rig. Even so, it's a great thing that can help many more people able to enjoy all kinds of great gaming experiences (and terrible, too, i suppose). And stuck at home all day for that reason doesn't mean game all day just for fun like so many seem to think it is. Sometimes it's just a couple hours a month able to do something fun for once.

Update BIOS. If that doesn't help, drop the speed by one (3600 to 3466 for example). If you really want to invest some time, it can most likely be stabilized at XMP speeds by tweaking voltages (DIMM, SOC but also VDDG and VDDP). Wouldn't necessarily blame ASUS, this is very common. The memory controller of the CPU plays a big role and not all DIMMs are equal either.

These policies make sense together. The government wants to return manufacturing to the US so that our supply chains aren't so fucked by global disruptions. By creating required demand for EVs and then putting high tariffs on foreign manufacturing...the only way for mega corps to efficiently meet the demand is to create manufacturing in the US. Thus you create jobs, home grown talent, etc in industries that will be critical for the future.

RDNA5 being a clean slate makes so much sense. Maybe I'm the crazy one here, but every time I hear about handhelds having 1080p+ screens I'm just like "why?" For such a wee screen so close to your face it makes close to zero difference. Before I actually played on my steamdeck I was a little worried that the 800p screen would be a tiny bit too low resolution but it's actually pretty perfect. Games still look great on it, I read somewhere that the pixel density of a 7in screen at 800p being held within ~1.5ft of your eyes equates to the pixel density of a 1440p screen and while I don't know if that's 100% true it sure seems like it could be. Only significant thing I notice going from Desktop to Deck (aside from a bunch of games just not running on deck at all) is the lack of RTX lighting in games that use it well.

its probably got more to do about the economy of scale... it's easy for manufacturers to find supply of small 1080p screens, due to the popularity of small tablets in the last 10 years. whereas 800x600 or 1280x720 displays have surely fallen out of 'favour' so to speak. thus its probably cheaper to buy 1080p screens. The same way that you can't really buy a 2gb or 4gb usb stick anymore.
