That's a good explanation for deer preferences. It is annoying and soul destroying to see plants browsed. Our English Springer Spaniels, fishing line, heavily scented soap and laundry fabric softening strips, all work well, but it is still annoying to see them browse on our precious plants Grrrrr!

That's why we are strong advocates of local, neighborhood garden centers and nurseries. Often the owners and experts live (and garden) in your same neighborhood (often even for several generations), so visit frequently, and get to know them, they are a terrific resource. We do not know definitively yet! So (honestly) the "school is still out" on whether it is best to prune it in spring or not. The plants you see in the video were trimmed to make them (like all our nursery plants) bushy and well shaped, and as you see they flowered beautifully! So this would indicate that yes, they could be trimmed in the garden in early spring. But in European conditions (where they have more experience growing this type of panicle hydrangea) they do not prune them until after flowering! In our trials we are testing them both ways, so we will know definitely in a year or two which is best for our conditions here in our USA region!

@@OverdevestNurseries now that it is mid April 2023, do you have feedback regarding its "survival" over this past winter in "real world" gardens?

Thanks for taking the trouble to reach out to us. In our time (which now extends to at least 5 years) growing this variety, we've never seen anything like you describe. In fact, during this time, our appreciation for it's considerable merits has just become stronger and stronger! It is without a shadow o of a doubt, an excellent plant that we have tested and trialed extensively and consider well worth growing. It's a natural (and indeed desirable) thing to see pollinating insects visiting on our plants, so we like to encourage everyone to plant more plants that provide habitats for our valuable pollinators and help the environment generally, and your other hydrangea plants are a good example of that. It sounds like there's something strange going on here, an anomaly that we suspect is more connected with the individual growing history of the plant rather than the genetics of the variety. Obviously, we are unable to speculate or diagnose the issue without seeing and examining the specimen (maybe this is something your local extension office can assist with), but it leaves us wondering if there's something on or in the pot or in the compost that attracts these flies. Some organic based compost materials can by their very nature can become habitats and food sources for animals and insects, so that might be something to consider. Which leads us to the point that purchasing plants from reliable, trusted sources is very important and sometimes plants that appear to be a bargain in a sale or marked down, can actually wind up to be very expensive - especially if the condition of the plant is less than in a healthy, vigorous condition. They are usually ailing for a reason, and that is often not evident at the time of purchase! If you were talking to David he would tell you, that some of the worst problems that he battles with in his garden, came in on plants that appeared to be a good deal at the time! So, we suggest you take a look at the pot and the compost, perhaps visit your local extension office and maybe make a trip to a reputable retailer that stocks top notch plants and backs it up with good service and information. And yes, maybe pay a bit extra... but know that good healthy, well-grown plants will grow and reward you with years and years of pleasure, so in the long run they will usually prove to be the best investment. If you have bare branches (at this time of year), that growth can be trimmed back to live shoots.

Our best advice would be to inquire at your favorite garden centers, alert them to its merits, and see if they can secure them for you. It is reported as having Hydrangea paniculata and heteromalla in its genetic background. But, it looks nothing like the latter to me... so I suppose, we have to wait and see what those with much better botanical expertise can determine.

The color of the petals do change as they age. In cooler climates (Europe) it usually takes on shades of pink and here in our nursery they will progress through creams and a pinkish "antique" bronze, so its natural to see it gradually change. We suspect as your plant gets becomes fully established and with varying weather conditions each year, you will see a range of aging colors. It actually was available last summer (2022) in Canada (I picked up 3 in Ontario). And so it should be more readily available in Canada in 2023.

On our website (and tags) we list it with a conservative rating of Zone 5, which means that it is perfectly hardy right throughout our entire Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern USA region: grownbyoverdevest.com/plant/early-evolution-panicle-hydrangea/ Research suggest that it could well be much hardier than that, but since our only experience with it is here in our region, we cannot say definitively. The plants you see in this video were lightly trimmed in late Autumn, which suggests that it flowers on new wood but we know that some of the breeding lineage usually flowers best on growth made the previous year, so the school is still out until we do more extensive trialing. Interesting question and one that still has to be fully investigated and determined! The general European consensus seems to be that these types should not be pruned in spring and instead be pruned in summer as soon as the flowers begin to discolor. But with our production where we trim everything frequently to produce extra bushy, healthy, well-shaped plants…. these plants (in this video) were trimmed in late autumn and as you see flowered terrifically well! Which shows that they flower well on new, current growth.

@@OverdevestNurseries since you say that the beautiful Hydrangeas in this video were pruned in late Autumn, were they then grown inside an unseated greenhouse where the roots never got to freezing ground? This then begs the question of what zone gardens would they be appropriate for. Even an unheated greenhouse is quite protected from hard winters as here in zone 5. These plants will also hopefully, be sold with LARGE PRINT PRUNING INSTRUCTIONS, since most people who grow and love Hydrangeas will prune off the new season blooms by pruning as we do those that bloom on new wood. I would give these a try for sure, but I read directions and am pretty careful about timing the pruning if applicable. These videos are so informative, make us all add the plants you show to our “must try” lists, and give great pleasure to us all just by your infectious enthusiasm. Many thanks David👍

But it time, further study may reveal it as being hardier than that.
