In this video I continue to modify the shop press until I get most of the uncontrolled popping to stop when pressing motorcycle crankshafts together. In the first video I install side panels on the C channels to box them in for more strength. In this video I test the press with this modification, then I go on to add more metal to the horizontal area above the Jack. Then I test that and find that it is a lot better, then I install a new 32 ton air over hydraulic Vevor jack. Better yet. I think this is going to do the trick.

Seriously cool work, Dale. A series of great ideas to make a good tool even better! That massive steel block made a big difference. Fascinating project. They should hire you as a designer.

Enjoying your videos, and upgrades. I am Boilermaker/ welder (fabricator) by trade. If you want more strength and probably some overkill. I would recommend cutting 2 web plates at least 10mm or 12mm thick to fit into the 2 top C sections, and make them span the full width of your press, then stitch weld them in. They can either sit right in against the existing web or to the outer corners of the c section flanges, similar to what you did the vertical sections. This creates a box section to help stiffen the top span.

Thanks Byron, I will try your suggestion, it is so much better now, but I can see that adding to the stiffness. Thanks, my friend.

Hey Dean, it is awesome now, but still some suggestions coming in. Seems this brand of press wasn't so good after all.

Good morning Dale. It looks like you got that issue fixed, great job. Now crank pins are going to be a walk in the park.

Nice upgrade there Dale. Looks like I will have something else to do in my shop, but it will have to wait till I get the bikes done first.

Thank you, Walt, glad it worked for you. I got tired of paying way too much for those oem ones. These work just as good and are cheap.

The press in my friend's shop was just a simple channel iron A frame with a bottle jack. The Montessa cranks had a groove on the pin and matching ones in the bore. We still had to use the lead hammer and feeler gauge for final adjustments

@montana2strokeracer 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, I don't think you can ever retire the hammer and feelers. But it sure helps control the uncontrollable.

Dale. Great job of taking the spongeness out of that press looks like it's going to make things easier. I'm very familiar with that brand press and the popping issue we had one at the last place I worked at and dealt with this popping issue

Thank you, I have been working with it like this for years, time to sort it out. I think there may still be some more solutions.

I think the pop is the difference between static and kinetic friction. The stiffness of the bed channels will also have an effect which the rattling plates amplify.

Dale, I think another problem is the crank pins can get side loaded. You think the pin is going in straight but it isn't. If you look at your video between 14.00 and 14.05 when the pressure is released the crankshaft kicked the 2 times after that it didn't. Sometimes you can push the pin in say 6mm release the pressure a touch you can feel everything jump one way then apply the pressure again. even then there is no guarantee it won't make the popping sound. good luck.

You are indeed right Ray; I can see the jack mount shift most every time and it does kick it sideways. I am going to look at tightening up the guides for the upper jack support also. It usually goes in straight (the pin) once it kicks over initially at first.

Nice upgrade Dale! I am wondering, if the cross channel supports, the height adjustable ones, might also add some flexure? Maybe you beefed those up too, and I missed it. As for Vevor, I took a chance and bought one of their 1.5 hp motors to replace the aging weakened one on my old OLD Craftsman table saw, and holy cow, did that make an improvement! With a Diablo blade, and changing pulley sizes to slow the blade down, I use it to cut 1-1/2" aluminum, and the edges come out almost mirror finish.

Hey Johnnie, yes, I am sure more can be done to stiffen the frame up. I will continue to try some things, but at this point I believe it is usable. Yes, all the Vevor stuff I have seen, seems to have favorable reviews.

You might also want to check your fluid level in those jacks Dale. I've heard of them being under filled new out of the box sometimes.
