I came for the hydrofoil. I stayed for the 80s television series music.

OH MY GOD THAT IS HILARIOUS! The 80's theme song, the "doo-doooo"s, the multiple takes of it racing by timed with the music...IT'S ALL SO CHEESY AND 80's AND LAME THAT I LOVE IT!

The point with this design is to stop the waves you hit from making the craft bounce and it's like adding shock absorbers to a boat, because it makes the ride so much more comfortable. It also reduces the fuel needed as there is less surface area touching the water, which means less wasted energy and better fuel efficiency. A good design for a daily water commute to work, and fun too.

I used to drive commercial passenger hydrofoils, this is a great concept. Please keep building!!!

hydro foil is a great concept. With only a small foil in the water there is less resistance for greater speed and less fuel consumption.

I know when I was like 11, our family went to Wiesbadden Germany, and we Rode up and down the Rhine River on a Hydrofoil. It was way bigger than this though, and held like 50 people. This was in like 1994 when I went and rode this.

This is amazing. No turbulence of wave impact. That spells a smooth uninhibited ride.

Advantages: Less friction = more efficient. Smoother ride from not slamming/bouncing on waves. Several disadvantages... Look what it takes to launch it and try to imagine what you would do to to get it from the garage to the lake. This would be for true foil lover. What a beautiful boat and great video.

Nice design. 40 mph is impressive speed on the ocean. The height would give it a smooth ride too. No sea sickness, ftw.

Quite right. You've got a point. Either way a person would be in deep (pun unintended) trouble. Weather to get sliced by a fast underwater wing or bludgeoned by a fast moving hull. A far, far less important consideration would be the cost to the owner of the 'foil vs the standard speed boat.

You must have to balance it like a bike. Even if the boat itself doesn't make good sense it looks like fun and I enjoyed the video.

@dieseldog00 My guess would be the water intake is located at the front of the rear foil.

This craft needs a third down rigger on the back this way gives it a caster affect for the person in the back TO WOBBLY THIS WAY cool idea .

@JA7036 Apparently it's because it takes more energy to displace the same volume of water than it does air, basically because water is more dense or some shit.

Im a windsurfer, and one day at just 15 Knots I was catapulted by a simple cap floating invisible, UNDER the water, which grasped on the board fin . Boy, what an impact ! Some windsurf boards avoid algae thrust ( also a catapult danger) by employing a less angled fin . Who knows Mr Horiuchi can understand that and employ the HUE helicopters system to avoid grasping troubles ( and give us a royalty for this consultation ... ) ?,

@smobyles there is way less drag; water is very heavy to move around the entire boat, if you just have to move it around 2 small foils, it takes less work i.e. you go faster maybe?

@JA7036 Less drag of water on the hull, it rides on a pair of small fins under the water, and it can go a lot faster on less power - and have a smoother ride - than if it just floated.

@dieseldog00 There's a cavity inside the rear elm and maybe a water pump just like in a standard motor car pumps the marine water in the proximity of the cylinders so you can have an open circuit cooling system.

I'm well aware of the history and the tech behind hydrofoil's. I was not bashing Horiuchi's design just making a statement. Do you get out on the water much? If you did you would know there is all kinds of stuff floating around out there just waiting for you to hit it. And since I can find no history of that design ever going into production it just may be a valid statement. So where are the video's of the boats you have built? "yeah..that's what we thought... silence / anger"

@13AJJONES Less water contact = lower overall drag coefficient. Water resistance is much greater than that of air.

I'd like to have the boat without the hydrofoil. Redesign the hull with steps like a speed boat so it would turn properly and get up on plane. With the new smaller higher powered engines that are available now thanks to the large PWC market you could make one hell of a fast responsive boat. Build it out of carbon fiber and fill the voids with foam so it wouldn't sink if you did hit something at high speed.

wouldent it be better for the jet to discharge into the water rather than the air? i meen surley theres more resistance in the water so its going to propel itself better. i see little or no need in this.

I think you might find that you would need the shit underneath as you would probably need something to stabilize it when you built up speed otherwise it might roll in a tight turn But then again that's only my theory

Add a gyroscope from a Segway to achieve better balance. (center of boats body mass)
