I have found, when using clay planting medium, using pelletized seeds or pelletizing my own seeds lets the plant germinate right where it's going to spend the rest of its life and I have much less casualty when I change from soil germination through the washing process then into the clay growing medium. I start the growing process with the cups full to the rim almost with hydroton and the bottom quarter-inch submersed in the nutrient solution. By the time everybody germinates and sets the first cotyledons, that water level will drop low enough to permit more oxigenation both directly on the bare roots as well as on the surface of the water. If I could just figure out a way to keep the damn bugs off my plants I'd be much better. Between high temperatures and bugs, growing hydroponically in north Texas is a real challenge. By the way, I have been growing hydroponically for over 50 years. I have tried everything under the sun and have settled in on using the kratky method. New sub.

Shawn, you can germinate directly from a netcup full of cococoir instead of transplanting. Hydrate the coir and fill the netcup, insert a seed and put it in your float. Just set the water level to about 1/2 inch below the bottom of the netcup and let them grow to it. Works great and one less step.

Jason Selph absolutely! Just didn’t want to pay for the coco. I’m a frugal type of person.

Great video. How did you germinate the seeds? Also how do you provide extra nutrients when their in those cups?
@ShawnBauer
@ShawnBauer 4 жыл бұрын
Saad Qamar they were germinated with standard starter seed mix. With the depth of my beds and the type of plants being used, I shouldn’t have to top off any water in its lifetime. That’s the beauty of it! Truly set it and forget it. But if I had to add water I will just lift up the Styrofoam a little bit and fill it with a hose

Thanks for this very helpful video. Can you stagger the planting in these net cups time-wise, i.e, plant each cup 7 days apart, for example?
@ShawnBauer
@ShawnBauer 3 ай бұрын
Possible but I’d worry about the older plants crowding them out so I wouldn’t. Depends how far apart they are

Its been a cool spring in the northeast, but you couldn't tell from the grow rates of your plants. I think you mentioned the the most recent lettuce was butter crunch and the middle planting was arugula, but i didn't catch the variety of the first lettuce planted. Would you mind sharing? Also, what varieties have you tried and are any better than others. Keep making these videos and thanks for sharing.

Can the clay pebbles be reused? I'm new to this! ;)

For sure! Should last for many many uses. I just throughly wash them off each time. They will break down over time and more so in cold climates if you let them freeze. Thanks for watching!

That’s seems odd? What are you using to read the water? Maybe the device is faulty? I’ve never had this happen
