As a 19yr old engineering apprentice in the toolroom and development depts, I worked on developing such a system 50 yrs ago. Performance wise it was a great success and was shown on TV installed on a dumper truck climbing a near 45 degree incline. The trouble was no-one was prepared to pay for this vastly more expensive system when they were already happy with our gearboxes.

Very nice. I've never understood why anyone would use such a "needlessly" complicated transmission, but when I see how easily it can be regulated with a simple swash plate, it all makes sense.

It's the most simple transmission and can probably the most efficient one out there, which is why it makes sense to use it on combine harvesters & such.

My only questions (for drag racing purposes) are how much hp these could handle? What wears down/breaks? Does the fluid get too hot? How do the cylinder walls wear under heavy load? How much pressure can the seals hold? Can it be made lightweight enough to compete with geared transmissions

This is fantastic. I always wondered how they worked but never thought to look it up. A multi piston pump like a sanden compressor (rebuilt those for a living once upon a time) and the valve is part of the drive motor itself. Very cool! Man I'd love to tear one of those completely apart.

Thanks for the video. Just so happened the last time I mowed my lawn with my 1330 Cub Cadet which has Hydro I could not figure out why my reverse all of a sudden was going so slow. After watching this and knowing now how it works, I found the problem straight away. The drive lever was bent not allowing it to go full reverse. FIXED!

Always wondered how this transmission system would work in a car, heard that BMC tested HST / H-CVT in an Austin A35 and Mini as well as investigated for the Austin 1100 with suggestions that a thoroughly developed HST system would likely rival or even become bigger than DAF's own Variomatic CVT system.

What causes a hydrostatic drive system to have slow drive speed in all direction. Is it when it's stuck in de-stroke.
@mekanizmalar
@mekanizmalar 11 жыл бұрын
When the arm is perpendicular, the speed is zero. When the arm is all the way forward or backward, then the speed will be maximum in one or in the other direction. However, I spent so much time to adjust speed in between, between zero and maximum, but I failed. Please look at my variable displacement piston pump to see, these speed changes changes. Or look at my Hydraulic transmission animation for symbolic representation of this circuit.

Because turbine have slip and would be inefficient for slow speed power transmission. This system uses a positive displacement pump that is very efficient at these speeds.

Efficency issue is through heat loss in fluid. The more turbulent the flow, the more loss. Turbulent defined by force acted on fluid over time (power) and geometry of space through which it flows. That being said, for vehicle, this is no problem. A simple mechanical planetary differental, with a smaller hydrostatic used as an input, would still give a very wide range of control over ratio. Simple!

@ahobimo732
@ahobimo732 2 жыл бұрын
Theoretically, you could eliminate the engine-side pump with a series of hydraulic lines and check valves. And if you used a two-stroke, opposing-piston engine, you wouldn't even need a crankshaft! You could control speed and direction of the motor output by varying the angle of the swash plate. But I'm not sure if such a design would be feasible in practice.

Water is a corrosive substance and does not have lubricating effect. The oil molecules structured such that they adhere surface of the piston and cylinders. This creates surface coatings which enable the piston slide inside the cylinder. Water does not have this property. Dip your hand into a bucket full of water and take it out and wait a couple of minutes, no trace of water will be on your hand. Do the same thing with olive oil; unless you wash your hand with soap it is very discomforting.

It’s actually so cool on how simple it really is ive been thinking on how it would work on a small boat utilizing a Aircooled motor my theory is that there would be no need to pump raw water into the boat for cooling like most Marine Systems do IMO thats always been a accident waiting to happen Creating easier mechanisms to sink a Vessel especially that many of those systems use rubber hoses around hot motors

There is Yamaha R1 2WD motorbike built with hydrostatiç CVT for the front wheel. The drive seems to have so many advantages why is it not in routine use in all motorvehicles? Not much on internet. As the other guy said, at higher RPM the efficiency decreases. So, it's great for combine harvesters & alike, but not great for bikes if you care about top speed. In a normal belt CVT, you don't have that much of a loss at higher RPM + it's way more simple in practise.

What happened when you just put water in it?
@RevAldea
@RevAldea 6 жыл бұрын
There has been uses of Teflon { = poly te tra fluor ethylene } coted even in hydraulic systems and Otto two stroke cycle engines but these all went to way-side due to the costs and up keep of these parts. But Teflon is the only way to use water as a hydraulic fluid in such a system. but the water must be kept ultra clean at all times, this means lots of maintenance cycles which would raise the operating cost to own such as these. So designers just stick with the tried and trusted methods. Look at American Motors Corp {AMC}, Chrysler, and even GM all these car makers got into having many lots maintenance cycles during the warranties They All went broke but AMC got bought by Chrysler who got helped by US government and GM reorganise too, with help of the US government. Both are now making cars and trucks that fewer maintenance cycle during warranty. So if it will cost the user to much time and/or money, the user will stop buying your products. Also do not get the oil companies upset at you. They just might change the rating method on you without telling you, without enough time to retool you product to use the new stuff. IE: Chrysler Lean burn carburetors ran very poorly for a little while back in the nearly the middle 1970's. The fuel called gasoline octane rating when from middle of the Lean to Riches Richness Curve to the middle of the middle to full Richness to middle richness at the same octane value plus a small amount. If you want to do the math here it is in full as per FAA approved classes full Rich mixture is 100 Octane and full Lean mixture which is 70 Octane, making the half way point being 85 Octane rating 100-70 =30 30/2 == 15 then 70 Octane plus 15 equals 85 Octane dead middle of the full Octane rating curve. But if take the middle mean rich curve that is about 87.4 Octane M.R.C. or less when mean rich is the above 85 Octane is the middle of the first curve while the second curve is around 87 Octane that is say 92.5 Octane full rich and 85 = 175/2 = 87.5 well that the number over simplified there is compression rate here which gets canceled out in the algy-math but is to say the percents by volume ratio for real gasoline was 7.625% oxygen to fuel and oxygen is 1/5 air aprox! for full lean mix and very close to 1.3686% Air to one part fuel for a full max mix while mean rich is 1/2 way from middle to 1/2 full rich to middle richness of 85 Octane. And then offset the this by the required 10% Ethanol by 10% of 88.5 time 90% {0.9} you will finally get the new mean mean richness 79.875 Octane middle of middle of that you get 84.46875 Octane IE: 87 Octane there about close enough for government work. Now Many may have go through hoops to get their, Please believe that most just cancel out when expand to full Algebra mathematics to do this until you are in to such or that you want to be there internet courses to back to speed or even teach you the full workings of math all of it right here on the internet. I say go for it. and then see that my have over simplified it. or may have errored which possible, I am only human but go proof it your self.

on paper this looks fantastic, but since i own a big forestry forwarder that has hydrostatic drive my conclusions are: -expensive to run. oil changes cost a fortune. (170 liter) -does not transmit power like a mechanical drive , even if this is supposed to be super efficient, it ain't. its 130 hp, and drives like if it was 80 at best. -verry costly to repair. i spendt a fortune on getting it repaired (by rexroth hydraulics by them self. never make this mistake again ever. ) i could get a full mechanical tranny just for the price of the repair on the units. not worth it. - short lifespan. sure, they say it runs 30 years and 10,000 hours. sure. well, actually make that 2000 at the verry best. but usually even less. i gona swap it to a mechanical tranny. i have enough of oil spills, lack of power, and high running costs. and absolutely have enough of bosch-rexroth. ripp off comapny, i'm not going to ever talk to them ever, suggest them to anyone , or purchase anything that contains junk they make.
