1978 Hydrostream Viking and a new to me 1998 Mercury 225 ProMax.
First day out with the ProMax and a big wheel. Running a 26p big ear chopper. Ran a best of 86 according to my Garmin in the boat. Seems the GoPro and Garmin GPS units don't agree with one another.
I really need to do something about the seat bottoms that keep flying around.

The glory days of 2 stroke outboard dominance from Mercury Marine. The sound from those 2.4L and 2.5L motors, especially in dual installations on the Talon tunnel hulls back in the day hitting 120mph + at 7500-8000rpm can never be duplicated, the hair on back of your neck stood straight up. There's a few youtube posts of boats doing exactly that and you all need to check them out, youll see for yourselves what i mean.

Great job! Takes me back to the late 70s , watching our cottage neighbours screaming up and down the lake with their new Hydrostream learning how to better control the chine walking. I fell in love with that boat .As I recall the drivers seat was mounted in the centre. Eventually they painted an “01” on the sides and were pretty successful at racing it. Thanks for loving that boat too, really enjoyed your videos , well done!

Watching the entire restoration, I wonder if big boat companies watch you indie boat youtube restore'ers and offer employment, this restoration was nothing short of amazing and how that boat is so fast with a single 225 is beyond my knowledge!
@TNels
@TNels 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, I have had employment offers from boat repair shops. But I have a great career I love with no plans of leaving. This runs as fast as it does due to a very good hull design. Howard Pipkorn, owner of Hydrostream, was a great designer. They just had shoddy workmanship demanding the rebuild of all their boats by this time. It's also light, the bare hull weighed 745lbs, which is heavy for a Hydrostream this size. The 225 has a lot more left in it, next video should be over 90.

Gotta LOVE the way Hydrostream's accelerate. I've got a Voyager XT with a John/Rude 300 V8, best top speed I've ever got was 98MPH with a 32P cleaver. What I really like about Hydrostream's (at least mine) is that anyone can drive it to 72MPH, it's such a pussycat... BUT, crack the throttle beyond that, and you've got a tiger by the tail. I have a Mercury High Five (5 blade) well 2 actually one bigger and pitchier for top speed and the other for hole shots. The amount of lift from a five blade is insane, barely any boat in contact with the water. Steering at full trim 55+ mph pretty much forget about turning the wheel. Had to go to Hydraulic steering from Teleflex, we kept stretching the line. Hydraulic was substantially more $$ but the improvement was easily worth it. Safety is improved 50% no more chine walking and steering response vastly improved
@TNels
@TNels Жыл бұрын
I'm thinking of adding a High Five with a really low pitch to replace my water ski prop. I'd like to find one in the 19-21 range to replace our old stainless 3 blade 19 for skiing. The boat loves a ET style prop right now.

@williamepstein4837 3 жыл бұрын
Your new motor sounds great! Looks like you are chine walking bad, that's why I prefer my 28 4bld. cleaver over a 3 blade. More prop in the water and easier to control the dreaded walk and air her out. Just my experience with my set up. Keep playing with her! That's the fun part. Shoot for 100 plus! Have fun! Please note that a Hill prop, as it comes stock, should be considered as blank, an $800.00 paperweight. Don’t even waste ur time running it. Take it to ur “prop” guy and when he stops laffing. Tell him to measure it beat it to spec on spirochete block, cut and shape the leading and trailing edges… and if you know what your setup needs go from there, then you’ll have a $1200 to 1500.00 prop that should work. Brother this is epic... Just watched your hull resto.... Impressive. I have my eyes on an old 78 19 ft Checkmate with a newer 351W and OMC800. New plywood, gelcoat is totally shot. Under $1000 to take it home. Needs prop. Probably have to go over the motor, likely gonna pull the floor to inspect and make sure stringer is done correctly... Has all the hardware and new CNC cut seat ply with carriage bolts already installed, sitting inside. Think it's worth it? You have the experience obviously. How much gel did you use? I'd have to do 3 coats most likely, 4 in places to cover the old flake adequately.
@TNels
@TNels 3 жыл бұрын
Hard to say what old boats are worth. I’m certainly no expert in that area. You’ve got to decide if it’s worth the investment to you. I doubt I could sell mine what what I have into it. Sounds like most of it is there, and $1000 isn’t a bad price for a project that comes with everything. I can’t remember off the top of my head how much gel I used exactly. It was probably 8-10 gallons total. If you check the comments in my videos spraying the gel I know I’ve answered that before. I just can’t think of it now off the top of my head. This process has been a ton of work and took me 2.5 years, but I’m loving every minute on the water!

To me from the views your showing, looks like you can raise the jacks an inch and trim up a few degrees and ride less boat in the water and have a bit more rooster tail. . If we could see a profile view of her flying by would give a better perspective of how she is riding. Up the prop by 2-4 maybe. Looks like your gonna have a hundred plus in your hands, floating that pad. The motor sounds strong, definitely try another night pitch prop
@ecurbaj9
@ecurbaj9 3 жыл бұрын
You’re right-fly it on the pad with absolute tight steering and the right prop - Any thing you add on the transom (trim tabs) introduce drag and slow you down - That boat takes a real experienced driver - Remember , only change one thing at a time - Fly it high and straight - Takes practice to keep the boat on the pad at all times - Good Luck!

I was able to run a 30 Hoss that had some work done to it. It handled really well and flew the boat nice and level, it just had a lot of slip and I couldn't get the speed out of it. The best I could run it was 82mph which works out to about 20% slip.

It will hit the 80's...... But, it doesn't like the 80's..... Looks like it was starting to be a fight rather than a cruise..... Couldn't have any passengers at that speed safely, riding by yourself ain't that much fun to me....
@TNels
@TNels 3 ай бұрын
This was the first time out on the engine combo. After more set up time is smooth running up to 90. A passenger helps with weight balance, easy cruising in the 80’s with a passenger.

@@TNels really?... That's great! ... How long did that take? If you wouldn't mind me asking?.... I'm kinda new at these type boats, and I'm trying to learn a lot about them, what little bit I have learned I got from talking to people but I don't think they really knew how to set one up, I watched a bunch of KZfaq videos but they didn't really get into how to really set one up..... Or maybe I was looking in the wrong place, maybe you could give me some advice because it seems like you have your boat pretty much together and you know how it works.... I like your boat and how fast it goes I just would like to have a passenger or two to enjoy the ride, but maybe you can't do that... With these type boats... But thank you so much well answering me back about my comment, you sure have a really nice boat......

@@michaelgreene2920 I spent about a summer testing different set ups. Engine height, engine set back, prop selection, and weight balance are all things to work on. Screamandfly.com has sone great info in the forums for set up advice. Just have to do some digging and reading. This is a small boat, there are four seats and you can bring three friends, but that would be tight and surely wouldn't be running in the 80's. But you and one friend would be fine. Time in the seat is a big part of driving these things fast.

Take off your air box and engine cover so your getting cold air ramming into the Throttle bodies. You’ll gain guaranteed
@TNels
@TNels Жыл бұрын
I should’ve tried that before switching the engines. The throttle body on the laser injected ProMax faces backwards so I won’t get any ram air effect now.

Massively overpowered. Boat quickly becomes unstable at speed, chinewalking; and, if you don't catch it very quickly can become deadly. Why not just power the boat to a point just under chinewalking speed and be done with it?
@TNels
@TNels Ай бұрын
That’s the first time out with the new set up. After making some changes it’s much more stable at speed. These hulls are perfectly capable of running stable over 100mph.

Then that walk that its producing on both engines is the product of something misaligned like the trans jack is higher on one side than the other . Nothing big but some thing if off by a hair. I got a 280 bridgeport on mine and it's dead on straight on the pad. But it had the same little effect when I first placed the engine on it. Do lots measuring to see if centerline is true. But she is f#$Ken tits bro great job..

This boat is underpowered for what you want. It left you in chine walk range for WAY too long.. dangerous. Either the engine or your balls didn't let you accurate through chine walk.

I believe it's more to do with my current prop selection. I still haven't got the exact right prop for it. I've found some that work much better. A new video running those will be posted tonight.
