A visit to a department store in Berlin-Friedrichshain in GDR times shows that little value was placed on hygiene and cleanliness. Unsightly goods in damaged packaging, dirty tinned food and unkempt floors can be found throughout the supermarket. A representative of the district hygiene inspectorate who was present was not sparing with his criticism, but finally had to admit that tighter controls were necessary. The manager of the supermarket has been prosecuted. Another department store in Friedrichshain is trying to be customer-friendly instead.
