So what was “Grunge”? At the start, it was a joke. Then it became a simple description of a sound/attitude, as well as a Sub Pop hype promotional term. Ultimately, it became a quasi-genre of music based simply on bands’ Seattle origins. But whatever the meaning is, it’s clear that the term “grunge” has permanently linked those 80s and 90s northwest musicians in music history.

Thanks for the upload. I have the VHS I bought from Blockbuster video back in '97 on clearance. Always love Chris Cornell's vocals on "Searching " 1:05:00. Watching this now, not much has changed, the media moguls still make every "movement "a banality. Hype was the perfect name for the doc.

Awesome footage such talent and such trauma at the same time from the success and the public and publicity of scrutiny and never having a private life again leading to drugs and suicide because the pressure for one individual so hard to handle they they have to escape in their own way and if they could prepare themselves and it not happen overnight and have cancelling counseling on how to handle this kind of says and go about in their own way in hiding when they can then it wouldn't end so tragic

I saw this documentary when I was 12 or 13 back in the late nineties and it pretty much shaped my whole life, attitude and musical preference wise. In the last few years I've been digging into so many bands from this, and so many of them are amazing. Green River, Wipers, Flop, U-Men, Bundle of Hiss, Love Battery, Blood Circus, Dead Moon, The Gits, shit. So many of these lesser-known bands are fucking incredible. Wish I'd dug into em all sooner.

57:01 Right now I'm wearing my wack slacks and some kickers, swingin' on the flippity-flop, bound-and-hagged drinking my bloated, big bag of bloatation. Some might say I'm a dish, others just call me a cob nobbler. However, a statement like that could only come from a lamestain. Whatever they're saying, I know I'll have a score time. Eat that, tom-tom club! By the way, plats and fuzz are on a discount at Walmart right now! Rock on!

I often think to myself, that few of these bands really sound alike, but they all are one in the same, as a community of individuals who love to express themselves through their music. And I cannot imagine the music world, without any of them, even the most obscure, or lesser known bands, played a vital role during those times. I always wonder, how many bands, purposely stayed under the radar, that could have been bands like Nirvana, or Mudhoney or Alice in Chains? I'm sure that some great riffs, that we all know from the major bands that became worldwide, recieved some influences, or contributions musically, from some lesser known, but equally talented artists.

@airoff8

Most of the live footage was filmed over a short period of time in 93-94, specifically for the documentary. They were mostly advertised as "secret shows" at various local venues, as well as a few in Bellingham, Olympia, and (possibly) Portland. An unforgettable time in Seattle.

I heard Andrew Wood was clean of smack but at a record label signing party he was so happy he wanted to get high to celebrate. Heroin addiction was actually fashionable back then. They basically left out Alice In Chains my favorite. The best band to come out during this time was neither grunge nor from Seattle. STP! Oh and Kurt was murdered. Do your own homework it’s all there.

Some of these bands they feature playing live on this documentary absolutely suck. I would like to think they didn't practice everyday and that would explain why they suck so bad. Nirvana alice soundgarden and co. were waaaaay ahead of most of their peers for damn sure.
