Start of a product line's always gonna be a disappointment. I just hope the existing blasters do reasonably well so there's actually the motivation to do better.

I picked up the rush 40 on amazon. Haven't had a chance to really use it yet but I think it's the best of all the offerings so far. I am nervous about trying to find the ammo after being shot, both inside and outside. I'm hoping to construct a little target from cardboard and a small aquarium net specifically for hyper ammo.

Ballistics are great, but they fall in this uncomfortable spot where they're neither disposable like airsoft nor easily recoverable like darts

If it's a tpe, it can be melted. I'd be interested in a video of melting down hyper rounds and casting them into rival rounds, and see what difference the sectional density makes in accuracy and range.

I did the math, used digital scale and calipers, the sectional density comes out to be ~74% higher on Hyper vs Rival ammo.

For those of you concerned about litter and the environment. First off, I commend you. Secondly, fear not. I am already in talks with a manufacturer to start making 3rd party, compatible ammo that is made from biodegradable TPE that is also shelf stable meaning it won't degrade sitting in your home or garage, but if left behind at a war it will biodegrade over the course of a few months. If/when I can secure a manufacturing base they will be available on Amazon, and if he wants, I can give Luke a special deal selling them on his website.

@JERRY tm I've tried Rival rounds in a slingshot, but I feel that their larger size makes them a little more awkward to load into the pouch and hold there as you pull it back.

@@deekswap695 most clubs are probably going to ban it depending on the arena available. I know that's realistically what I have to do with my venue. I've gotten enough crap with regular darts and rival rounds from people, can't risk something harder to find.

@@scottjs5207 yes. if the hyper continues they will probably also promote dedicated nerf arenas, instead of hobby-oriented clubs and events. There are talks of nerf brand shooting ranges, and if nerf-brand arenas become a thing, they will most likely forbid non-nerf, modded, or 3d printed products, as they usually do with nerf-sponsored events. It feels as though nerf is trying to put a fence around its market, which is only tragic because nerf's engineering and rnd capacity can really benefit high-end (even half-length) blasters.

Almost impossible to find during an ammo sweep after a game. Tight laws here is Western Australia regarding littering in parks or near waterways. Big fines. Won't be using these ever.

I hope they don’t stick exclusively to hoppers with these hyper rounds. you could probably make something like the hades which would still have a very large capacity while not having to deal with the inconsistent feeding we have been seeing so far with the hoppers.

I’m torn on liking them or not. I just hope Hasbro continues the Rival line. I would love to see a spin off Nerf Rival Zombie Strike line. There is a lot they can still do with it. But either way I have no problem having wars with both ammo types, I think they are fairly matched

OoD What a super cool video. Comparing and contrasting these ammo types was fantastic. I get excited about all new ammo types. Can't wait to get my hands on it and see how it goes. I do wonder if thr dirty rounds are less sticky and would run better in a Proton Pack?

Nice extensive insights. I would be interested in finding out which barrel material will ‘not’ have a lot of friction with the rounds. With darts we tend to try and make sure the tips don’t touch the barrel because it will slow them down a lot. The barrels inside the two springer operated blasters should answer my question but I have no idea what kind of plastic those are made off. Do you have any knowledge on the topic?

The Rush 40 is definitely my favorite so far. As someone who typically modifies a bunch of flywheel blasters I am pretty bummed about the Mach 100 right now. Accuracy is all over the place and wonder what is really happening to the rounds as they exit the flywheels and make their way out of the blaster barrel. If they do come into contact with the barrel, does the stickiness of the round grab the barrel a bit more than Rival which may tend to slide over the plastic better and not interrupt whatever spin pattern it's in? Does the small size and/or ratio of size to barrel diameter make it difficult to be consistent on hitting a hop-up and they omitted it entirely? I'm assuming that the stickiness is what's responsible for the inconsistent rate of fire as well. In some way I wish it was Nerf Rival Hyper such as the smaller rounds but higher density foam or similar that's not sticky. I completely dig the idea but think it's a bit half baked based on performance characteristics. Colors and graphics are sweet though!!

I've seen questions about magazines for these. I imagine you could potentially make a mag that used rollers, belts or ball bearings of some kind to get past the stickiness issue. Potentially expensive, but might be well worth it for consistent feeding. The other thing you could do? Make a double-lane mag, so the balls are rolling against each other. Then make a blaster that can feed two Hyper rounds at a time. I don't totally know that that could work, but I feel like it's worth messing around with. I'd do it myself if I had the money, and may in the future.

I'm curious about losing them outside, pet safety and child safety... And if it comes with eye protection, does that mean HVZ will need to require eye protection?

If Hyper blasters are allowed for the event, I'd highly recommend eye protection even if the organizers don't explicitly require it. - Perry

I'm honestly kind of surprised these aren't getting more hate from the die-hard nerfers. I fully expected there to be a vocal minority at least telling us to go play airsoft if we like little round ammo that much. I'm not entirely sold on the concept yet, but it doesn't seem as worthy of contempt and scorn as the abomination that was Ultra. That being said, do you think these would work out of a spring-fed tube/stick magazine, or would the squishiness and stickiness cause problems with feeding? The hoppers are cool, but the feeding issues are making me second guess whether I want one of these or not. When I pull the trigger I want to be at least relatively confident that it's going to do something other than make noise. I would love something pump action with a high capacity under-barrel tube magazine, or maybe one of the rivalesque internal curved ones, especially if someone can crack the code and get a hopup to work well enough to stabalize the long (relatively speaking, of course) range accuracy...

We've already tried sticking hyper rounds into existing magazines with looser tolerances and a rival mag with a prototype retention tab. Unless you overcome the stickiness in some way, the feed rate is likely to be the same or worse than a hopper. - Perry

how different is this from 6mm bb at this point? I play nerf cause the darts don't bounce and roll everywhere and its easy to clean up.

Look like a choking hazard for kids and pets. I assume they've been tested for that. Also hard to find in the garden. They give you capacity but I'm not sure if they give you the play or fun factor of a darts and magazines. But it's nice to see something new and different.

I personally mainly collect/plink blasters which range largely in performance so I I usually tend to just use them inside, upstairs where I keep them. My dog stays downstairs, but with the size of that ammo I’d be way too afraid of my cat near them

Got the 40 round today its amazing. Got it to play indoors and it shoots faster than I thought. It does hurt from closer ranges.

I put a Rival round in my 12GA bolt action shotgun, used a plastic disc gas seal behind it (otherwise the pressure will blow the foam to shreds), then used a primed-hull (no powder, just primer in a shotgun empty shell), and it fired out at about 380FPS. It *almost* went through a cardboard box, left a 1.5" diameter circular tear on the box face. The ball was fine afterwards, just had some bore residue on it. Would make for an interesting game of snipers! Ouch

Not to be a contrarian but a Rush 40 would be bad for HvZ. Reliability is even more important in HvZ than regular (HvH) games, and the high chance of misfeeds due to the hopper could leave you firing a blank at a pivotal moment. The 5-6 shots in a Kronos or MK-2 should be plenty for a sidearm and I'd take reliability over capacity any day.

My conclusions are that Hyper rounds are an improvement over Rival performance wise, with hop ups they’re pretty accurate at range. But it’s difficult to find the rounds, as they sink in grass and bounce a ton. Indoors the ammo type will be fantastic, but outdoors you’ll really have to spend a lot of time looking for your rounds when you’re done playing

I found the trick! Home Depot sells UV LED light bulbs (shape of standard 60W incandescent) and they are only $7. Take an extension cord light using that bulb in complete darkness, and you will have an instant "green dot radar screen" showing location of all balls near! 😁 The things glow super bright green under the UV light. Can see them right through the grass.

Based on initial testing, rival spec cages can shoot hyper ammo, but not very well. Luke and the team are already at work testing *hyper* crush cages for select rival blasters, but no word on when those will be available. - Perry

I love and hate how small these are. I love how much capacity they could offer, but I hate that if I fired this in the grass there is no finding it. Rival is already hard enough to find, but I think this would be impossible. Now if you were indoors in a space without stuff for these things to hide in and under these might be great. Especially if you had those UV lights.

About the stickiness - an Airsoft solution - spray it with silicone lube spray or even the inside of the hopper. Could help with that. From what I've seen the inconsistency of feeding is horrid.

The perfect shotgun ammo,super small so you can carry Aton of them, it's gonna be easier to shoot multiple at a time, and even if they end up live rival not being able to get past a certain range.. it'll be fine cuz it's a shotgun, ment for close-medium ranges

yea I would like to see if there is a way to mode for sound dampening. I know nothing about acoustics. I thought about trying to fill some of the deadspace in a blaster with foam around the relevant noise generating parts but am afraid I would add heat retention.

Late to the party, but was pondering thoughts on melting these down and making half-size darts out of them instead. Thy would be heavier however WAY more durable than foam, and potentially 1-piece instead of 2 (more aerodynamic?). Not saying that foam darts don't last long on their own... just trying to think outside the box

Hyper is too wide to fit in .50 cal full-length or short dart magazines, so I doubt they would feed well through a flywheeler sized for such ammo types.

What are your thoughts on Hyper nowadays? I just got into modding in the last few months with a Rush being my first. With a spring from you guys, better plunger seal, and adjustable hop up the damn thing gets as much range as my modded Nexus. The Siege and Mach (stock) aren't great sure. Finding the rounds in grass isn't too bad imo. If you want hard to find, grey Adventure Force darts basically dissappear forever in grass lol. I found a good solution for the stickiness/feeding for those having that issue is Blaster Advanced Dry Lube, just spray alittle into the hopper and on the feed ramp. Its plastic/rubber safe. Excess wipes off easily. It's also good for other stuff like mag followers and anything else you might not want to use grease on. But hopefully that initial hate won't kill Hasbro's motivation to come up with something more refined/improved. I feel like there's a ton of potential with Hyper.

We're withholding our judgement for the line as a whole until a few generations in. I can't imagine they put their best blasters out first, and I'm hoping the next three are an improvement. That being said, the Rush-40 surprised me at how capable it was in CQB, especially when you put a hop-up on it!

I have an idea: what if you take a normal hyper blaster, take it apart, and imploment a uv light into the barrel, so it shines the ball before it comes out of the barrel, so you can see where you are shooting at night.

We tested it, and found Hyper rounds stick together and jam in the hose too easily. In addition, many clubs disallow hyper and smaller round ammo types due to the difficulty in dart sweeping afterward. In the end, a Hyper-based Proton Pack wasn't going to work.

As someone who received Nasty bruises from Paintball, that really hurt, it seems like denser and higher velocity, could lead to PAIN ! Wouldn't a Hyper Round moving at 200FPS+ Hurt? Part what is great about Nerf is it doesn't hurt, Maybe that's not true of Super Modded Blasters.

The number one complaint I hear is inconsistent feed. If they can't improve the feeding mech, Bring back mags cause that inconsistency is nullifying the high capacity advantage. Perhaps they'd bring back that drum design that was teased a couple years back? Second big complaint is the inaccuracy. Again, nullifying (or, perhaps, justifying) the high capacity. Drag has demonstrated an improved range and accuracy on a mod so we know it can,be improved- for a Springer, anyway. Flywheels on that small of a spherical projectile might be tricky and cost preventive?

The sectional density of Hyper rounds is 0.00209 grams per square mm The sectional density of Rival rounds is 0.00128 grams per square mm. The sectional density of Hyper rounds is 1.628 times that of Rival rounds. (And yes I know my significant figures are not done correctly 🤓 but I wanted to report the findings)

@@scottjs5207 in terms of density (not sectional density) the hyper rounds are 2.4 times as dense, so a Rival round with the same density of the Hyper round would be 2.4 times the weight. In other words the Rival ball would weigh 4.502 grams instead of 1.865.

Bolt action, pre-charged pneumatic, super-accurate nerf gun that gets between 1 ft and 2 ft groups at 20 ft. (I don't know where I heard it but 40 psi is about the limit that nerf darts can handle.)

At stock, Hasbro says they shoot at about 110fps. As long as they don't leave welts, I don't see why we wouldn't allow them for HvZ, at least here in Athens. Thanks for this review, because I've been wondering about them regarding HvZ games. I'm still a little concerned until we actual try them, thanks to that smaller surface area.

They will indeed leave welts. I’ve only tested at point blank on bare skin but they leave welts.

Yes, a design patent, which only covers shape and appearance. More info on the material and other technical properties are in the patents for the Hyper blasters however I haven’t carefully read the claims so I don’t know if anything is really protected. A slight variation from this round will probably fly, pun intended.

I got the same. Hyper density: 865 kg/m^3. Rival density: 358 kg/m^3. Both will float (water density is 1000 kg/m^3).

IF... Big IF... If Hasbro could tweak how the Hyper ammo is made so it's less likely to clump together in a hopper set-up, it might have potential. Beyond that, the rounds glow under a blacklight, so it's easy to find in grass.

when you do end up manufacturing these, try to find a biodegradable material of equivalent properties. I can almost guarantee more of these will be lost forever than any other round out there.

Ammo might be ok, but the blasters are horrible. The amount of misfires is too much. Like you can never be sure if you're actually going to fire a round it's that bad. ( from what I've seen ) Still might buy the pistol to check it out.

Part of the reason Ultra is such a disaster is it didn't offer any advantages over existing ammo, it just costa bunch more. At least Hyper ammo allows for more to be carried.

You should point out how much bouncy they are. Considering the smaller size, bounciness would make it much difficult to retrieve it. Not to mention hazards for pets or young ones.
