Ай бұрынAn animation was released tonight by Thorpe Park which gives us a little backstory into Hyperia, the UK's tallest rollercoaster manufactured by Mack Rides set to open at Thorpe Park on May 23rd as guests become skybourne. We also discuss the ride and the surrounding area set to be known as Fearless Valley.

Surely Merlin are realising they at least need something like Big Bob or the incredible Nemesis Eye or the Marmaliser. And with Universal hopefully coming to our island like no other, they need to make the theming as good as Voltron, Taron, F.L.Y. These coasters draw international crowds. Hyperia definitely will anyway and huge thanks to Merlin and Thorpe for building it, but let's also set an impression that people from Europe and beyond already expect.

God u don’t know how much Hyperia annoys me so much we’ve waited 12 years for this coaster, one that is such a big coaster for the uk industry and it’s just plopped there with no thought, no theming and cheap marketing. Can’t wait for universal to show Merlin how u actually present a coaster.

If you’re happy with half an experience then kudos to you, the ride will still be amazing but all the fanboys / girls overlooking how poor it looks is quite telling… it’s why we end up with lazy projects in the first place because they know we’ll lap it up with our low standards as a country. At least Nemmy Reborn made an effort!

It is a shame they didn’t theme and give this a great story but we know the reasons why. But having just got back from riding hyper coaster in Turkey, it has got me even more excited for Hyperia as that was a great coaster.

I've always been focused on the ride experience as opposed to theming with hyperia . Though I'm excited to ride, the ride area and ride experience could REALLY benefit from more theming and it's a shame it's not pressent.. Backstory video is a nice touch, but do agree with your point on it sticking out with nothing to back it up (or anything known at this point)

Yeah I like it. Just got air vibes from it. But the younger generation (teens) won’t remember this from 22 years ago and that’s their target market so might as well use something that’s tried and tested from the past. 😊

I think Hyperia doesn't really need theming majority of Hyper Coasters don't have theming look at Silver Star, or Expedition GeForce or even Hollywood Dream the Ride. I just happy we are getting this large coaster and maybe the station will surprise us no one has shown what's going on in there. And remember the budget was set for Hyperia under the old management

Silver Star has great station style / theming and a little theming before the lift hill - never been on the others so cannot comment and the station won’t suprise us it’s an empty shell with some smoke and lights, that’s a promise

I like the animation but it kinda feels like it's for a different ride in a different park somewhere due to the lack of theme surrounding the ride and area. Feels like the two don't add up/merge together. However it will be an epic ride and maybe they have future plans to add in more theming, who knows?

Merlin just enrages me, I know they are a business but they ONLY look for a selling point with no other objective. Look at how Voltron at Europa Park premiered, no gimmick and a well rounded, themed experience with no real 'signature' attention bringer. Even the gimmicks of Alton Towers rides at least made the effort of theming with the Wicker statue, Marmaliser, Th13teen church as the one thing that defines the image of the ride. I feel bad for the creative team that would have been allocated a piss poor budget, because Merlin executives evidently think Hyperia's height is the only thing needed to draw crowds in.

Thorpe park is more of a teenage thrill park, and I’m fairly sure most teenagers don’t really care about theming all that much. They just want to be scared shitless which is fair enough. So in that regard, Hyperia delivers. It’s quite hard to really nail theming especially with tall coasters. For example there’s quite a bit of theming for Shambhala yet for me it’s quite forgettable and the only things I really remember (in terms of visuals) are the first drop, the ampersand and the splashdown. For most people visiting Thorpe, I believe the first drop, splashdown and stall will be the main spectacles and most people will be looking up at the giant coaster rather than down at the ground. As an enthusiast myself, of course I would prefer some nice theming. But I just think the majority of teenagers looking to go on this won’t give a damn

Shambhala has beautiful entrance / station theming 👀 on ride doesn’t need to be crazy themed. Just don’t paint a backstory if you don’t want a themed ride.

Seems like a bit of a strange backstory. Definitely a bit thrown together as you’ve said for the queue to have that bit extra. Don’t think the ride needs theming to be great but if you’re gonna give it a bit of depth try go all in or all out don’t dip your toe in.

@@LiftHillsandThrills The issue I have is not that it doesn’t have much theming. I think Thorpe needed smth to stand the park out and if it takes some theming budget to do that that’s cool. What the shame is that the entire theme feels last minute to the extent that I would honestly prefer they just took the same route as icon and left it stylised and vague.

I have never seen Thorpe as a theme park, it's just an amusement park in an old quarry on the M25. So any themeing they can be bothered with feels like a bonus. Its never going to be a beautiful, immersive park sadly.

If the money is there i feel like over the next few off seasons they should at least try to spruce up the area a bit, i just feel like its going to feel out of place. The ride experience will obviously be incredible but it could be a little better if the presentation was better.

When it comes to backstory and theming the 2 big Mack coasters opening this year could not be further apart. In contrast to Hyperia, Voltron is themed to the max. Mack is the only ride manufacturer who offers the whole package, meaning the ride itself, the theming and a good backstorys. I don't get it why most customers don't take advantage of that.

A budget issue, there's a manufacturer (will not name names) who had a brief from a certain company that specifically said 'not bothered about theming, just want the cheapest option' - direct quote. Says it all really.

@@karstenbursak8083 Of course it would be but Europa care about their park as it’s their only one, it’s a legacy, their pride and joy and their attention to detail is world class. Merlin cannot compare as they’re too corporate, it’s all numbers in a spreadsheet, they couldn’t care less about making the most themed or the best it’s all about the monopoly and how much they can dominate. The only reason investment has stepped up is because Universal is a threat and they know they’ll dominate the second they open

With all the new work… signage, paint work, accents, queueline screens. I’d say stealth edges it… but the ride is very clear it’s a racing strip (something notoriously known for not being heavily themed on circuits) how on earth Hyperia looks / resembles the story is beyond me

I quite like it tbh! The instrumental soundtrack gives me goosebumps every time it kicks in! Also, re the entrance portal, we really can't judge that yet. The one for WOJ looked awful at fist and then they added everything to it and now it looks awesome. Does forbidden valley look like a valley... NO

If they pull it off, it could be similar to Oblivion. Oblivion has a 'theme' but it's mostly executed in a way that I'd class as 'stylised.' With a colour scheme, videos, music and only a few props in the queue, that's the vibe I'm getting with Hyperia. The winged entrance is a good start to that, it wouldn't take many more theming elements and stylisations to pull this off to a similar level as Oblivion. I hope you're wrong about the station... I hope it does surprise us. But I have a sneaking suspicion you'll be right. :/

Sometimes anyway ;) Hanging all my hope on the fact Jack said he wasn't going to show us the inside of the station in any construction updates, so he didn't give any spoilers. I recently rode DC Rivals Hypercoaster in Australia. That has less themeing than Hyperia, and yet one of the best coasters I have ever ridden. Theming is important, but not absolutely necessary. Also, I would say Hyperia has more theming/styling than Stealth and the flying fish combined!

Stealth has theming (albeit simplified) which links exactly to its theme. Can the same be said about Hyperia? 🤔 Theming is not necessary if you’re just plonking a coaster in somewhere but when you’re painting a backstory, creating animations to tell that story and weaving it all into a new THEMED area… it’s actually very important

@@LiftHillsandThrills all true! Although AIR (sorry I can’t call it Galactica), has a deep backstory with very little theming (more landscaping). Let’s hope it smashes it out the park in terms of ride experience, then the lack of theming wont be quite such a concern.

Only us british can get a massive multimillion pound record breaking rollercoaster and moan every little thing! Personally it's great to see some investment coming to our theme parks, the last ten years has been nearly dead, and finally things are happening again, and that is awesome.

Ride great… but if you’re happy with how it looks then you should work for them. Great for the UK in terms of ride experience but another shining beacon of everything that’s wrong with the industry in the UK and Universal must be rubbing their hands together when they dominate the market within 12 months of them opening

Totally agree not too sure that the animation should be in the queue line seems more fitting if it was part of a pre show..? not too taken on the name fearless valley .. it's not in a valley and why are the parks not spending on theming! is that not part of telling the story it's like building a house but not adding any internal walls or doors why bother starting a job and not doing it properly!!

If a park is weaving a story is like to immersed in that story throughout. The ride will be incredible and having speakers belting that beautiful soundtrack in my ears as we go around will be great but it’ll be taking me on a journey past some metal fencing and nothing more… Alcotraz the ride wasn’t the theme… so for me it all has to blend for the best experience but of course it won’t affect ride experience that’s entirely different and will be incredible it’s just a let down having something that puts us on the map in the UK looking like every corner has been cut from it. I’m not sure how we can be proud of it as a full package… ride experience could very well be world class but the rest… sadly… is not

Thought the video they have released is alright, nothing special! I was actually ok before just expecting it to be a damn good ride with no theme (not happy about it and obviously Merlin should be aiming higher). But if anything having this half assed theming and story seems worse to me as it just doesn't fit with the coaster, the station, the overall area etc all being just stylised. Hate the area name too, why not call it Fearless Lake... Works with the storyline and the actual park/area itself! All that being said, still mad excited to ride and that we are getting the coaster at all! Thanks for the video.

As much as I know this is an unpopular opinion, I personally think that the off ride experience matters just as much, if not slightly more than the on ride experience, for any coaster. As such, I'm really disappointed with the direction this project is going in, I wish it had more theming! Like you say, it just feels lazy, I hope they add more theming to it in the future but I seriously doubt it. Still really looking forward to the coaster, and very grateful to be getting it so close! I hope the inside of the station does surprise us. But I'm just expecting it to look essentially as it does on the outside 😅 But, personally, I think that Nemesis will still be my favourite coaster in the UK for it having a great off ride and on ride experience, cause I can't notice the rattle, even after 25 rides.

Exactly this, not an unpopular opinion. If you’re a theme park fan why are you ignoring the ‘themed’ part is a question I ask many a time. Both have to work together well if you’re leaning into a backstory etc

Thorpe probably know they could just put up an old piece of cardboard with find your fearless and the wings on it and use that as their theming and promo and people will still claim it's amazing judging by the reactions online to everything so far lol

Honestly… this is the truest statement I’ll read today haha someone defending it to high heaven as their partner works on it. Others just devoting love on whatever is posted. People need to realise it’s ok to have their own opinion, it doesn’t matter if others don’t agree or like it, it’s okay NOT to be a sheep haha if you genuinely like it then great, if you don’t then don’t publish you like it online then trash it in DMs (seen that often too) haha it’s never dull this space!

@LiftHillsandThrills Exactly, and as you've said before these criticisms don't come out of spite or a wish to see these projects fail they come from a love for these rides/attractions and a wish to see them succeed and become better. If everyone was a sheep and praised everything that was done then we wouldn't be hearing things like that the future is looking brighter for theming or getting things like Nemesis Reborn we'd be getting the likes of what we're getting with Hyperia with everything in the future yk

Ive never been to thorpe.. ive been to parks across europe and never thorpe. I thought hyperia would change that when it was announced.. but nah. The ride experience looks great, but i just can't get excited for rides without themeing. Idk if thats just me

Clearly the budget has not been there at TP, and I'd guess that GP's and most Thoosies will forgive that after they've experienced the ride. Overall, it's a massive shame that we couldn't have had more of a themed experience, but we'll all be buzzing to have the ride at all once it's open... And 'Fearless Valley'?... quite possibly the most pointless land name I've heard!

Given what is a significant investment in the ride system, it’s does seem odd not to spend a relatively modest extra amount on decent theming. However, if you make it too good it will show up the rest of the park which is far from world class. Also from a personal perspective, and this may be an unpopular view, whilst I appreciate good theming I don’t give a toss about it when I’m on a ride. I just want to enjoy the sensations of the ride itself. The whole “backstory” thing is just marketing BS to sell merchandise.

When you're on the ride, unless you're flying through a city (F.L.Y) or around amazing theming (Taron) it doesn't matter but backstory if you're leaning into it really should be themed

Honestly, they should drop the story entirely and just have it as a generic themed area with an awesome coaster. The story is suuuper basic and therefore unnecessary (don't get me wrong, the animation was cool), just do what Colossus is doing and have an extended version of the Hyperia theme and keep whatever is gunna happen in the station, and it would have been fine 🤷♂️ You made some really good points about the name of the area, couldnt agree more with you there

It would have been considerably better if Hyperia wasn't telling us about her blazing inspiration. Way too explicit. Sometimes you need to show rather than tell. Otherwise similar option, the theme is awful but the ride experience looks very cool. Maybe now it's taken the height from the big one they can tear down that jolty rustbucket before it gets listed and build a smoother hyper to compete.

To be honest, the actually ride experience doesn’t need much theming due to the speed however the queue, station and plaza is definitely lacking a lot of theming. There’s virtually nothing . The entrance sign looks alright but could be a lot better. The area name is terrible. I could think of a better name than ‘fearless valley’. I’ve never been a fan of the finding your fearless slogan and how they have plastered it all over the station and maintenance bay. Looks VERY cheap. At least the layout looks very good but VERY short , especially for hyper coaster.

This is still a low effort attempt of a theme. It’s an amusement park / fairground level of theme. The area looks nice but it’s not something you expect at a theme park. Do I care? Not so much if the ride is good. I can suspend the idea of escapism but I’m not going to pretend this is a top notch theme like many people seem to be commenting on social media.

I'm not a fan of the back story for the ride because I know if they had the budget they could have done more. This animation reminds me of the smile always videos posted before the smiler's opening, which did a great job of world building, but this one doesn't really build excitement for me.

Not sure playing it in the queue line will work unless there’s things complementing it theming wise - concepts of the wings - a workers yard where she built the wings… a lava section where they were formed - the further you go into the queue line the more the wings are built and developed etc just a nice progression to the station before you test them and take flight

@@LiftHillsandThrills 2008 Thorpe was it's prime, rn we're just coasting with what we're getting. Merlin, as much as i hate to say it because Thorpe Park is my childhood, needs to remove rumpa rapids and storm surge, rapids to put probably an rmc there and replace storm surge with something better and they need to lower their prices on everything. Annual passes became more trash when they upped the prices and lowered the benefits. The park is running tight on money.

I think the whole theme, presentation, and ride identity is pretentious and tedious. Giving Merlin the benefit of the doubt I like to think it would all work better if the theming budget wasn't cut. Mako at Seaworld Orlando is a great example of how a "stylised" ride can still have a convincing and compelling identity and brand.

@LiftHillsandThrills Hyperia is an exception because it's a hyper coaster, my home park is pb so I'm used to it and I enjoyed Silver Star (a hyper coaster at the "world's best theme park" that isn't themed), oh, and Thorpe is an amusement park anyway.

@@ThrillNetThorpe is never labelled as an amusement park it has themed areas and themed rides to boot. Silver Star also has themed queueline packed full of F1 goodies (including cars) and even theming before the lift hill ascension. Theming whilst on ride is zero but that’s forgiven as they’ve still made an effort where it matters and it’s on theme and on brand, can you honestly say the same about the golden prison? I think not
