Of course though GP is freaking the fuck out and thinking someone could have been flung out of the restraints or something silly so hopefully Thorpe Park will give an update soon to reassure people that no one was at risk of dying.

@@chrissy9997 yea more than likely this as doubt they would give parks direct access to source code could be an input to the HMI as I imagine there are loads and would explain going up and down the lift hill as may have been manualy checking the sensors input to see if they were in the correct state

@@lparry9004 A breakdown happens to all rides, it's not too bad. There are always procedures in place on how to evacuate the ride and get guests off the trains safely. I can't imagine that's what they're nervous about.

Absolutely correct. As an Engineer I would sooner lose my job than be held responsible for someone being killed or harmed and then being criminally charged with negligence with all the subsequent consequences. That's also why I would never ride on one.

@@scubahooduk More than that, but I get your point, it wasn't a long enough testing period, that makes it worse. The testing process was clearly rushed, and now look where it's landed them.

As a theme park ride engineer who has installed quite a few big coasters, there were a couple of observations during testing. Firstly, there was no pull through test. This is not just for a clearance envelope check, it is to check train to track clearance. If you watch the first run video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m5aWmsmlu87Sh4k.html You will notice a clattering noise as the train crests the top of the lift hill. This is either the anti-roll back dogs or the chain dogs touching the track spreaders. They can be adjusted to a certain extent, but it may cause engagement issues on the lift hill. The simplest way of solving this is to notch out the track spreaders where the dogs contact them and re-weld in something we call "Skateboards", because the parts that are inserted resemble the deck of a skateboard. This is not unusual on new coasters and is a relatively quick process that only takes a few days. As a speculative guess, I think this is what they were looking at. A couple of people have noted the short testing time and they are correct. A pull through on a coaster of this size takes about 1 week. If any track adjustments are required, they are done at this time before the first run. It takes around 3 weeks to set the block zones and carryout verification tests, then a further week to add the second train. It is always good to get another couple of weeks of running with the staff on top of that, by which time all the gremlins should have been found.

No, it's not 'buggered already'. There is an issue with it, they will get it sorted. New coasters very often have teething issues. It's gone from testing 20 to 30 times a day to dispatching 2 trains 30 times and hour each. It will get fixed.

But if it is the lift hill that's the problem, (Which I'm convinced it is now.) my guess is that several metal fatigue cracks have been found in the lift chain most likely caused by excessive strain from the vigorous testing of the ride, sending train after train after train at very short dispatch intervals for 2 months solid. The last thing anyone wanted is of course the chain snapping and causing further damage just weeks after the ride opened. If this is the case then the blame lies with Mack Rides, as they should've done a better job with forging the lift chain, not rushing the forging and doing a better job with checking it for alloy defects and impurities and such.

@trainlover16 I don't think it's the chain, you gotta consider this isn't macks first hyper coaster. They have had 2 running for 5+ years now. If there chain design was faulty they would have fixed it and we would have seen these problems on the other rides.
