Great review. So good to get a straight forward appraisal. Thanks very much.

With the pockets its actually a 50L backpack that is why it feels kind of bigger than other 40L backpacks might. HMG advertises only the space of the internal pocket which is 40L and it has additional 9.8L space in outside pockets. Great backpack!

I've had the windrider 3400 for a few years now and it's my favorite piece of gear (next to maybe my hammock) 😂 and I had similar issues with the water proof issues , but I think my cats might have something to do with that

@@MoveWithMurph I use to store all my backpacking gear under my bed. My wife got a new cat a few weeks ago. I saw what he did yo our blinds and curtains so now my gear has a new home. I just pictured my backpack, air mattress, backpack, and rain gear full of holes from the little a-hole. Funny thing is she named him Rip and he seriously just rips shit up. Cats scare me lol

I have a Southwest. I have wondered if water enters the interior of the pack through the stitching that mounts the shoulder straps to the body of the pack. A high stress area and seam sealing may not be adequate at keeping the water out. I will have to look more closely at the lumbar area. Overall, the pack does a good job for me due to carrying more water and usually 5+ days of food. I don't mind using a compactor bag to protect from what I consider to be minimal leakage.

Agreed. Just a pack liner and it turns out to be pretty bomber.

David Dark I wish I had, that’s funny. There are so many great reviews of HMG, and I’m a bit suspect of them. I got one to check the fit. I wasn’t that impressed. My evaluation is very incomplete because I haven’t taken it out on the trail. I’ve only put weight in it and walked around the house.

@@barondavis5692 gossamer gear G4-20, (I never thought that I would have considered a frameless pack but the reviews are ALL extremely positive). Gossamer gear maraposa, Osprey levity, ULA Ohm 2.0, and I few others floating in and out of my vision. I have significant metatarsal pain and inflammation in my left foot, recovering extremely slowly, and right calf muscle ruptured 11 months ago. It’s never fully recovered. So, LIGHT, lighter, LIGHTEST, of everything, is dominating my choices. Regarding gear in general I am a terrible, what if, and I need it because….. Watching hundreds of ultralight and very light gear load-out videos has been very helpful in retraining my mind and gear list. Ironically I find having to much “stuff”, irrespective of the weight, to be very stressful. So I guess that I am battling with my mind and body 🤪. 🤷‍♂️😮‍💨

Thanks for the honest review! I have heard alot of dyneema packs leak at the hydration bladder hose opening? I always thought dyneema to be nearly waterproof but you make a good point about the stitching. Laminated may be a better technique than stitching. Thats too bad cause i liked the looks of this pack. My only complaint at face value was the lack of load lifting straps! I prefer packs that have them. Such a useful feature! Yeah adds weight but worth it imo. The black version of this pack has stronger dyneema. Wonder how it performs in comparison? Maybe zpacks having a frame away from the pack body would be a better choice? But even they have moved to a thicker ultra pack material. Hike on!

Some people don’t have issues with water I guess l. But mine and my partners both leaked. The material itself is water proof. My partner had the black one. Simulator on every level. Definitely no punctures though for sticks. I honestly felt the same way without load lifter before I purchase this pack, but I honestly did not notice not having them.

I currently have the black one and on the AT there's no issue with it as my current re-thru. The manufacturer makes no claims to this bag being waterproof and even states to stuff gear in stuff sacks for added water protection. Dyneema is waterproof, but anywhere there's stitching (regardless of the pack), there's the ability to leak, even with tents and tape seal/seam seal, no matter the cost or the manufacturer. With a proper fitting pack, load lifters aren't needed. I've been doing this in the wilderness for 45 years now (since age 9). Packs fit much better prior to load lifters and packs now that fit the person do not need them. This isn't just my opinion, but countless of backpacker's opinions and why several manufacturers are doing away with load lifters. I love the Hyperlite and have been using it since 2013. I've used them out west, east coast, midwest, and on long and small trails and the bags are what they claim. I currently have a zpacks duplex that has pin holes from not using a ground cover and small sticks poking through. They are currently patched, but there again, zpacks states (just hyperlite) that when not properly cared for pin hole can occur. Enjoy the hikes, have a great day! Gonna enjoy this zero today and back out tomorrow

@@jamicrawford6729 Thanks for the info. At closer look i also noticed the shoulder straps on hyperlite are stitched up higher than on other packs i've seen i wonder if that is what eliminates the need for load lifters? Just by design? Part of my worry was from the mountainsmith zerk 40 pack i bought in 2020 with the vest style shoulder straps and it tended to sag on my back with heavier loads after awhile and had no load lifters to help that issue. Rucks in the military also had this same issue. The ruck sag! Lol.. I just went ahead and purchased the new mystery ranch bridger 55 pack. Its in no way ultralight but hints on it and i have had good luck with their packs and futura harness in the past. I was recently trying to decide between it and the hyperlite mountain gear junction pack in black. Which i may still get at somepoint but my gear is kinda middle of the road as far as weight goes right now. Some light, some heavier. I hope for now i made the right choice. Lastly i do tend to pack my gear as if it could get wet anyways so not too worried. I just had thought some of these dyneema packs were really "waterproof". I should just say all these packs can only be highly water resistant. Lol water always finds a way in eventually. Lol. Good luck on your hike! Stay safe!

@@guitarhiker4449 I think the design for the straps are great and part of the reason for no need of the shoulder strap. Also, the material doesn’t stretch, which doesn’t allow the opportunity for back sag (at least as bad) like typical pack materials. Mystery Ranch is a good bag! I’ve got all brands and use them for different things, but seem to always find myself using the HMG the most

No HMG pack is remotely waterproof. If you believe so, you have not been out for a long time in heavy rain and rough weather. Have a look inside your pack. Do you see any taped seams on the bottom section? Neither taped is the exposed area on top where shoulder straps connect. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iamahpdql6-md58.html
@MoveWithMurph

I agree, that's why I use a pack liner. The material it's constructed from is a waterproof material, and some of the seams are taped, so light rain or snow I had no issues with water coming in. Only around the hipbelt and lower area of the backpack during heavy consistent rain.

Ha ha, OMG, the flies of New Zealand!! A Maori friend told me that when God was making New Zealand, he/she created such a paradise that there needed be something that kept All peoples from wanting to live there, thus the black flies are infamously abundant and so irritating. TY for the review, still trying to find a more traditional ,comfortable pack 40+ L pack around 2.5 lbs, any recommendations? (re-entering into backpacking again, post raising kids and older body no longer wanting to carry my 7lb Dana Design Arc Terraplane:-).

Check out Klattermusen. They make packs tougher then these DCF ultralight yet only a bit heavier then them. I went from arcteryx Bora and Kifaru mag ( heavy weight beasts) to these swedish guys. It's a nice gentle transition. I have raido 55 liter model. Which is really more like 70 liter and I can haul 50 pounds easy. And the pack itself is a bit over a pound.
