Freckles, sun spots, dark spots, melasma...these are all skin conditions that fall under the umbrella of hyperpigmentation. It occurs when an excess of melanin (the pigment that produces skin color) forms deposits in the skin that are darker than the rest of the skin. While hyperpigmentation affects all skin tones, it's more common in darker skin tones and can be tricky to treat. That's why I reached out to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Alexis Stephens to discuss the best skincare tips and treatments for hyperpigmentation for darker skin tones.

Oooh I have so many questions for you! I just noticed you have a KZfaq and I will be subscribing! While I love the skincare community I’ve noticed that not much research has been done on women of deep complexions. We paint skincare with a wide brush but it really can be specific and I appreciate women like you educating others on topics such as these.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge Dr.Alexis. I’ve so many questions for you.. Cyspera Cysteamine cream you mentioned contains hydroquinone. I was just wondering if the results are going to be long term or should we keep taking breaks in btwn & continue the cream.? Since hydroquinone is notorious for their side effects..! They usually come back ten times worse when we stop the treatment or do we just have to use it forever with intervals.?

It’s so important to find dermatologists who have treated people who look like you!! I am a south Asian women and we genetically and naturally have dark and thick facial hair. It’s not seen as “unusual” among south Asians bc it’s literally a part of most women in that ethnicity. My dermatologist told me I had a hormonal imbalance that was contributing to my facial hair. While I understand that hormonal imbalance plays a role in many women’s facial hair, I beleive that understanding different ethnicities and their skin is so important !!

OMG, Dr. Alexis sounds knowledgeable about this. Thank you for the information. Been suffering from terrible acne and hyperpigmentation for the past four months. One thing that stood out is, it's important to find a dermatologist that has treated someone that looks like you. I recently visited one, and she wanted to start me on Accutane. Now I get bad ance when I am stressed, and I have more than enough on my plate at that time, but it usually goes away. This time around, that sh%t scared, I felt like my face was attacking me. I just didn't think Accutane was the solution, knowing that I only get ance when I am stressed.

Think this topic is just broader than deep skin. Some with these issues might be lighter than medium dark or ~deep tan, so not quite dark in the grand scheme. Might even apply to type 3 skin

Vasudha Cidambi because of relativity. Darker means different things depending on where you are. Same with ‘fairer’ in Europe is different from ‘fairer’ in Africa

The Tyrosinase inhibitors mentioned, someone should make a product with all or most of those. So that it has the best chance of working. The ones on the market are so expensive ($80+). And I don't have the patience to put 4 serums for 1 purpose. **insert eye-roll**
@adamaf1989
@adamaf1989 4 жыл бұрын
If you’re a fan of Deciem or The Ordinary products, they have a slew of serums with the mentioned ingredients. You’re still going to have to layer, but it makes the overall cost more tolerable. If you want a high impact combo, you can get an RX for tri-luma, which is retin a, hydroquinone and a steroid all in one.

Hydroquinones are NOT recommended for skin of color because it causes extreme rebound pigmentation when you stop using it. Check out Dr. Vanita Rattan.... She has a KZfaq channel and she specializes in skin of color. She gives her whole background story and she has worked in the laboratory and done many clinical trials using certain active ingredients to determine which percentages of the product are the perfect amount for skin of color that will not cause our skin to burn. She also has developed a cream with so many active ingredients that she's tried one by one on different patients in clinical trials. I just ordered it from overseas and I can't wait to try it. You will gain SOOO much information from watching her channel.
