In this video, I show you how I use the indentation technique to achieve hyperrealistic results when drawing fur. You will see part of my charcoal drawing process of a leopard and learn some useful tips for achieving the most realistic pencil drawings. Hope you enjoy this!!

I'm Arianne and I started making pencil drawings in June 2020 during the pandemic. I have been following my intuition to recreate life onto a blank piece of paper and want to share my journey of becoming an artist with you.

The lady is obviously talented, but what i also admire is the hard work. Artists like these take days or even weeks out of their life to create things that others can enjoy. They trade a part of their living lives for a little bit of immortality for after they are six feet under. So from a simplistic philosophical sense being a good artist is probably one of the most meaningful things one can do with their life.

absolutely gorgeous work. However, when I do intensive work, I rely heavily on my Mahl stick. It truly saves my wrist, forearm, & shoulder. Stunning work dear.

Is the crooked pencil we see at the end a special tool, or a regular pencil you broke/contorted - and if so, doesn’t that make it more difficult to apply pressure? (Nice work btw😊)

There's something about drawing "hyper realism" that I don't think most artists understand. If there are areas of blended shading to indicate parts that are out of focus, this isn't a drawing of an animal, or a subject. It's a drawing of a PHOTO of the subject. Because there's no such thing as "out of focus" if you're drawing true realism of a subject. When you look at a live subject, 100% of it is in focus.

How do you manage to keep the scale of the details aligned with the overall drawing ?

It is super helpful to have the reference printed out in the same scale! Even if its just a small portion. Also zooming in on the reference (on screen) until its the same size as your actual drawing to get a true idea of the size and as you practice more it does get easier 🫶🏼

How do u fix the finished drawing? I suppose u dont frame it under the glass, or?

Once i finish a drawing i spray it with fixative about 2-4 times and then i either store them wrapped in tracing paper and later rolled into a tube or they get sold and the collectors frame them 💞

For this one i used black indian ink first and then added charcoal on top to make it extra dark! 🫶🏼🫶🏼 its strathmore smooth bristol paper (white)

Yess!! The leopard stays blank as well as a one cm margin around it so i can draw the little hairs that stick out❤ i thinkkkk i might have shown this in anothwr video im not sure

I dont think i would get the same result and i dont really like using white charcoal either. I only use it for tiny details like the whiskers etc 🙈

no estoy de acuerdo con eso pero cada quien con su opinion. No se “necesita” mas que un lapiz y un borrador para hacer algo bueno. Las herramientas adicionales son solo eso HERRAMIENTAS si no sabes como usarlas no te sirven de nada. Puedes darle todos los materiales posibles a una persona que no sabe dibujar y simplemente no va a tener esa nocion de saber que hacer con ellas, cosa que pueden tener otros.
