Hyundai i20 N vs i30 N track test comparison (lap times) at the 2023 N Festival at Sydney Motorsport Park. We also tried to compare the i30 Sedan N (Elantra N) but heavy rain made the circuit very slippery.

Man ohh man i just love everything about a Hyundai i30N hatch.....its my dream to own one of those. Thanks for always showing this car love.

It started pissing down like crazy in Sydney that night, with thunderstorms and severe weather happening all over the city, kudos to Hyundai for allowing this to continue to happen while the weather went mental, unfortunate we couldn’t get a proper lap time on the Sedan, would’ve loved to see how it compared to the Hatch, that 8 seconds difference is huge between the i20 N and i30 N, but understandable as the i20 N has a baby 1.6L engine. Would love to see a proper time for the Sedan in dry weather and also test the Kona N and for good measure also test the Sonata N Line as it’s the only “N Line” model that competes with the full phat N models, the i30 N Line will be too lukewarm to compare.

It was pouring down at one point. I came home to leaves and sticks all over the road. Pretty crazy. Yeah it would have been cool to see the lap time of the sedan, and the Sonata. Maybe next time.

I'd love to see a comparison of times between an i20N and the similarly drivetrained (10 less Nm of torque) i30 N-line manual. How much slower would the increased weight, slight disadvantage in torque and presumably less aggressive tyres of the i30 make it? Whilst the i20N will be a collectors item for sure, the i30 N-line Premium manual (at the same $35K price point) would make a more well rounded daily drive.

That track looked amazing, bigger than those in the U.K where I think the i20N would shine more, maybe only 1 or 2% slower than the i30N but a lot cheaper to buy and run, great video

@@drivingenthusiastaustralia I actually loved it. Was stressing a bit when they actually let us out but once I got into the groove was fine. Plus the epic storm made it so much better.

Nice driving! What's the more compliant road car out of the hatch and sedan? Are they really firm in comfort mode or do the dampers slacken off enough? My wife's Cerato GT is so bloody firm I can't ride in it with my bad back. I'd assume you've driven the Cerato GT and felt its rock hard ride and wondered what your thoughts were on how the N cars in comfort mode compared to the GT ? Cheers

Thanks. Yeah the i30 sedan does ride a bit nicer. It’s the more modern and more complete car for sure. Longer wheelbase too I think. I just liked the hatch on this particular circuit. I have driven the sedan on this circuit before, in the dry, and it feels more stable but I like the slightly more twitchy feel of the hatch. Just a personal preference though. Hope that helps.

Hey mate I’ve got the i20N and have a bad back but the suspension is firm (not adjustable) but the seats are different in all variants the one with n lighting near head rest are not comfortable at all for me and my seats are amazingly comfortable and supportive balusters I haven’t sat in the non light i30 seats so I can’t comment on their comfort. I think it’s mostly the seat that makes the difference as it absorbs the handling’s firmness. I can highly recommend and N car as they are just leaps ahead for the money you can’t go wrong but I’d look at replacing the N light seat and put the i20N seats and you’ll have the best of all .

Yes it was extremely slippery. This sedan was wearing the Trofeo tyres too which aren’t ideal in the wet 😅

Can you do a drag race between a i20 N vs i30 N vs i30 Sedan N (Elantra N) vs Kona N and for good measure I’d love for you to pit the Sonata N Line (preferrably the pre-facelift as it’s lighter) And also track test the Sonata N Line to see how it fairs against the N models, the Sonata’s performance is on par with the rest of the N models yet it doesn’t receive much love in these events.

That’s because the Sonata isn’t a track car despite having similar power, no e-diff etc, doesn’t put the power down or handle nearly as well

⁠@@adamb8552the Sonata N Line was tested on the Nurburgring before being released out to the public. (Video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZuGqNqoqZzeZp8.htmlsi=D0miHlMX1VCOjV5s) As a Sonata owner I can tell you that even though it lacks an LSD it handles quite well for a car with lots of torque with an open diff. Flooring it round a corner or bend and hearing those tyres screech and burn is just so satisfying and in a straight line it is an absolute bullet. I know it’s not an full on N car like the i30 N etc… but it would still be good to see how it goes up against them. I’ve drag raced a i30 N at the Motorsport Park and I beat him quite easily but I think he had the pre-facelift model with 202kW and 353Nm. So I’d like to see how it goes against the current line-up.

This is so disappointing. I've been super curious as to whether the i30n Sedan or Hatch is the faster car. There aren't many direct comparisons between the two online. Thanks for trying to put it together, the effort is appreciated!

It was raining heavily when he test drove the i30 Sedan N, hence why he got a horrible lap time, it was never meant to be a true lap time, believe it or not the Sedan actually weighs less than the Hatch, so it should theoretically be the quicker out of the two as it has a better power to weight ratio.

@@russell3436 The sedan wears slightly wider tyres too. Shame about the rain as it would have been very interesting to see the difference.

Isn’t the Elantra N come with Michelin pilot sport and the 20 hatch and 30 hatch come with Perrelli zero so if that’s the case you need the same tyre to compare. But great video mate

In this case the Elantra was fitted with Trofeo tyres for the track, but it was wet anyway. But yes you’re right it could be a slightly different result with equal tyres.

@@drivingenthusiastaustralia I’ve got the i20N and I’m sure when I go to 225 40 18 that’ll change my 0-100 time as it’ll reach it in second gear not 3rd and the compound will differ . So those trofeo would’ve sucked being a outright track tyre in the wet . Not much tread depth to disperse water .

If you look at TCr, the Elentra N is a better version but the I30 looks much better personally.

If you do the same test comparison, using a tight track, then you will find out, which car handles better and is appropriate for the track. When at straight the 2 liter engine produces 20 more km/our top speed, then you realise how unfair the test is. If you had appropriate instruments, you could measure the speed on tight turns in the same track.
