I-5 is closing in SW Portland for one full weekend from 9 p.m. Friday, June 28 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2024 as part of our I-5 over SW 26th Avenue Improvements project.
Work began on the I-5 bridge nearly a year ago. We’re using a construction method that builds the new bridge underneath the existing bridge while I-5 remains open.
During this closure, we’ll finish the work by removing the top of the existing bridge and adding new asphalt paving - all during a single weekend.
Selecting this construction method saves an estimated $5.5 million in costs and six months of construction time, as well as reducing the impact on traffic, nighttime noise, and environmental impact, while improving safety for workers and drivers.
