Interstate 78 (I-78) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that runs from Union Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, to New York City. In the US state of New York, I-78 extends 0.5 miles (0.80 km). The entirety of I-78 consists of the Holland Tunnel, which crosses under the Hudson River from New Jersey and ends at an exit rotary in Lower Manhattan. The tunnel and its approaches are maintained by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ).
I-78 was planned to take a longer route when the Interstate System within New York City was originally proposed in the late 1950s. The proposed route of I-78 was to head east via the Williamsburg Bridge to John F. Kennedy International Airport and then north over the Throgs Neck Bridge to I-95 in the Bronx. One unbuilt section of I-78, the Lower Manhattan Expressway, would have connected the Holland Tunnel to the Williamsburg and Manhattan Bridges. Another unbuilt section, the Cross-Brooklyn and Bushwick Expressways, would have extended southeast across Brooklyn, connecting to what is now the Nassau Expressway (New York State Route 878 or NY 878). A third section would have connected the Nassau Expressway, at the southern edge of Queens near JFK Airport, to the southern end of what is now I-295, in central Queens. Due to opposition from the communities along the expressways' routes, these sections of I-78 were never built, and I-78 does not connect to I-278 or to any of its other auxiliary routes.

Such impressive views of the New York City and Jersey City skyline on I-78 Eastbound. Also one of the few interstates that has signalize at-grade intersections.

These roads were originally built before the Interstate System in 1956. To be designated Interstate 78, waivers from the US Department of Transportation were required because of the stoplights and at-grade crossings. Must have been a holiday to have traffic like this. All I could think of while watching was this is the route the Martians took into NYC in Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" in 1938, before they croaked in Central Park.

@@donavanjohnson409 I-78 was originally supposed to cross lower Manhattan via the Lower Manhattan Expressway (LoMax) then cross the Williamsburg bridge and cross Brooklyn as the Bushwick Expressway and go to JFK airport and then turn north on the Clearview Expressway (currently designated I-295) into the Bronx and end at I-95.All of the freeways (except a portion of the Clearview) were cancelled in the 1970s as part of the freeway revolts in NYC.

Almost weekly for the 90s I used to go into Manhattan from Allentown Pennsylvania, after getting my EZPass I realized 1-9 would eliminate a NJ Turnpike toll, although the merge to pay the piper and after paying was a mess. I still don't like that real high bridge on the Turnpike. You brought back memories.. again

Inside the Holland Tunnel, there is the state line marked in the tile walls, signed both New Jersey and New York. This video doesn't show them. Only the narration for the viewer is visible .No actual markings.

The state line marking has been removed while the tunnel walls are being renovated.

I drive these roads every day! The road work you see is a signage replacement project NJDOT is currently undertaking. You’re on 78 Local for the most part, but there’s a lot of inaccurate by design road signs in Newark on 78. At 5, if you continued on 78 Local, you would’ve to the same toll plaza without needing to go on that flyover to the Express lanes. I’ve assumed they try to shunt the tunnel traffic there because 1&9, NJ 21, and airport traffic enters onto 78 Local past the Newark local/express merge.

8:55 - 14:49 This whole section should be designated I-78 AND I-95. The exit numbers are for I-95, and it’s tolled as part of I-95, but it’s only marked as I-78.

It's marked as I-78 the New Jersey Turnpike Newark Bay Extension, So It's Signed as I-78 NJTP. I-95 and The NJTP have a concurrency so there's no need to change it.

Taken this road many times to the Crayola Factory in Easton. Of course, a slowdown at the Jersey Turnpike merge - think they should get rid of those tollbooths. You should've detoured at 14c for Liberty State Park. 14B to Liberty State Park? Never noticed that... I always take 14c.

14B puts you on the other side of the park, and is a couple cents cheaper!

@@frankzappa3834 Yeah, I was thinking that too. I’ve only been that far back in the park when I drove around it once just to see how far back it went. I guess they’d rather have people come in the “nice” entrance at 14B rather than the cobblestones down the road from Liberty Science Center. Not the best of areas.

Starting in Good ole Union county. For some notable Jersey scenery 🤨… take the Lincoln outa the City to the NJTPK south. Enjoy the views past the swamps, EWR and through the refinery. Now you’ll get an understanding of the jokes about NJ.

That sign at 6:28 is contradictory, it says: REDUCE SPEED GET TICKET instead of REDUCE SPEED AND GET TICKET or REDUCE SPEED TOLL AHEAD

I-78. Another interstate they did dirty. Terminating at the end of the Holland Tunnel? It should have made it thru to Brooklyn and continued to Queens near JFK Airport where it was to originally terminate. I know it would have plowed thru neighborhoods but it could have worked with some tunnels. Sorry I’m a highway infrastructure nut lol.

@@MileageMikeTravels Agreed. imagine how much better traffic would be if they had that elevated expressway from the Midtown Tunnel to the Lincoln Tunnel - no in-Manhattan exits. Robert Moses may have been egotistical and a bit shady, but he did get roads built. Like Mulholland, he got things done. Mulholland I'll at least give credit to because he thought he was doing the right thing by LA. The question that concerns me - do these people exist any more or did they die with Rickover?

In theory it can be done, have the current Holland Tunnel as the "Manhattan Exit" and build a new straight through tunnel from NJ to Long Island. Expensive but worth it....
