I-84 In Oregon SHUT DOWN! | Trucking Through A HUGE Blizzard Part 1
Thanks for stopping by! In this video, I had a heck of a time getting to work with all the snow on the ground. Once I got to my truck, however, that's when things really started to get crazy. I helped several teams chain their trucks, and then chained my own. I-84 was shut down for a few hours, but once they opened back up I was able to begin my journey to North Dakota. Stay tuned for PART 2, dropping tomorrow!

I always keep a set of goggles in my truck. Like the kind you use for dirt bikes or snowboarding. They are absolutely brilliant for when you have to work around outside in heavy snow, heavy rain etc.. Especially if you have to pull over on the highway and needs to get outside. You don't have to squint your eyes, but are able to see the traffic - it makes it a lot safer

In my day the automatic did not come about till 1979 and I was one of the first to drive one. How lucky today it's standard in most new trucks. Keep trucking you all and be safe out there.

We had a decent amount of snow for the first time in years here in the Netherlands. Had to drive for DHL the night after it all fell. As a rookie, it was stressful but incredibly fun as well. Got stuck twice and had multiple moments where my single drive axle went all over the place while loaded. We don't have chains, but i would love the experience to run them. Had a blast at least but I'm glad its over now :)

Something that might help you out when you chain up, if you can, roll forward onto them. When you roll forward you don't have to fight the quarter fender. Also if you hook the first ink onto the inside hook before you go to one that makes it tighter it will keep the extra links from hitting the trailers and the road. Also. On the lights, try spraying some wd-40 on them when doing your walk around. It helps keep them from getting frozen. You can usually just wipe the ice off.

Get two pieces of 2 x 6 lumber about a foot long each. Put them in front of the inside drives and roll onto them. Now you have a bit of space under the outside drives to chain.

another tip for chaining up... without having to slide back a little onto chain... I carry a length of hook like 2 feet long, to grab the inner loop end, pull towards you and connect the other chain end... to make it easier, allow the outside portion of chain towards the inner side... once the inner ends connect, then pull the outer chain ends together and connect.

I've been driving through this winter blast for the last three weeks between Northern California to Illinois. It's been physically a challenge trying to avoid any accidents. Iced over Wyoming hills at night in the dark and Iowa steep declines. Even Arizona snowed hard enough to make me shut down. Pray for Texas. All roads are a no go, and I can't even go home to New York City right now. I understand how difficult it is right now. My 2020 Freightliner Cascadia truck is currently in the shop getting the air brakes fixed because the sensors were frozen and made them stop working. I'm using the engine brake and foot brakes all the way and thats hard

adding a little tip for chaining up, here is what I find very helpful... in prep for winter chainup, in dry good weather, I lay out chains and take out all tangles... then use a cheap carribiner and connect the 4 ends of the whole chain so that they come together... this way when I pull chain out of my box, chain is tangle free and ready to use... chain doesn't even snag on anything when oulling out of the box because I lay all the chain ends at the front edge of the box.

And yet, it seemed like there wasn't nearly enough snow on the ground to warrant using them. Drove for a decade in the great lakes snowbelts, and never once needed a set of chains. Carried them whenever I crossed the Rockies, and only needed them there once, and that was only because the WA highway patrol made me put them on. I could've crested Snoqualmie without them, because I grew up dealing with daily snow.

That clip at the end of the video where you are chipping ice off of a LED light, shows the Problem LED lights have, they do not work well in snow and because they do not create enough heat to melt the Ice. The Incadesrence lights, the old style, got enough to melt the snow and ice. You see this on New LED lights for the traffic lights, you can see all kinds of videos and pictures online with these LEDs covered in snow and ice.

I hate chaining because it is so dangerous. I know of 2 drivers that have been killed in Oregon while chaining. So be careful out there. Also you might invest in a heated jacker with hand warmers. Glad to say I've never chained. Just waited a day or so, then it was clear enough to go. Usually ended up closing the road, anyway, due to accidents. Stay safe everyone.

It makes it a little easier to put on the chains if you have a block of wood to put down and pull the inner dual up onto. Chaining up is horrible and usually by the time you are done you can not feel your fingers. You did make it look pretty easy.

I was out that way with you. It was a fun one. I had both drive axles chained and the trailer. Made it from Tigard to the I82 split then went up to tri-cities.

You are one courageous lady. I am in Wisconsin which is full of snow. But I am not a snow driver anymore. Had a close call driving a car in this type of weather in the past and lost control for a sec with a tanker truck heading towards me. I got it back in my lane just in time or I wouldn’t be typing this right now. After that, not worth it anymore. If it’s bad, I stay home. Stay safe Shelby and everyone

We waited 2 days for freight from Portland.. and another 2 days out of seattle because I-90 over snoqualmie pass was shut down... Took us another 2 days to get the bottleneck sorted and boxes to customer.... last week was a nightmare.

9:20 you drive right by the Pewag building on I-25 in Pueblo Colorado. Get you a Bud T Bar tightening tool at Boise Stage Stop or that casino truck stop at the bottom of cabbage hill. Boise is $10 cheaper.

I live right in the middle of the Gorge.. we hit 40-70 wind gusts, 16-20F Temps and not a huge amount of snow for about a week straight.. but Oregon's side sucks because they don't salt or spray. Makes 84 a horrible experience! I felt bad for all the truckers delayed in The Dalles, Hood River and such - no choice but to sit and hibernate. :(
