Read receipts don't exist in Discord, unless you do a bit of trickery :)
Now I'm not going to ask why you would want to know if someone read your message. You could be sending an important DM and just want to know if someone read it. Or you could be someone obsessed with read receipts that feed into your insecurities.
I'm not judging, just kidding I am.
But how do these read receipts work? How do you set them up? And how do you protect yourself from them?

If you go to your settings > privacy and safety and you have the beta filtering, you will be able to be view logged. However you can turn off this read receipt system by setting the "Direct messages" filter to Show. Anyone that does not have the beta will not be able to be view logged. TL:DR Discord's explicit media filtering beta will load the image and trip the view logger. If you don't have it in your privacy settings, you wont trip the view logger. If you do, set the DM filter to "Show" to avoid being logged. If you are having issues, try sending the URL first in an EMPTY server (no bots, no friends, only you). Then you should only get 1 embed sent = link is primed and ready to go :)

Fun fact: This is used by corporations in emails and is called a “tracking pixel” to see when you open an email from them. It’s also why your email client blocks images by default.

This would actually be a good feature for discord to just have, have it disabled by default, and allow you to give "consent" per dm to let friends see if you read their message, if you come to an agreement that "yea if i read your message and didn't reply, my brain probably went elsewhere" it can genuinely be useful, but there are also the downsides of it with abusive relationships and all that iffyness.

Also, if you have to "consent to read messages" then I hate to break it to you, but there's something weird going on in your "friendships". People have been using iPhones for over a decade now, and read receipts have been a thing for many years. Some people have read receipts turned off (which turns it off for the people who talk to them), some have them on but can't view read receipts because the people THEY talk to have it off, or both people will have read receipts on and hopefully have the maturity to not pee themselves whenever their message gets read but they don't get a response. We don't need "consented read receipts" when they could... just be turned off... 💀 Anyway, if you or your friends throw fits about being left on read, you need new friends and a new mindset. You are clearly too addicted to the internet/accessible social media. It is unhealthy to be that obsessed with READ RECEIPTS to the point you have to ASK FOR CONSENT FROM FRIENDS? TO READ MESSAGES? LOL

It's only typically on ones that the cylinder is manufactured wrong or super cheaply, it's VERY unlikely unless you buy one from a shady site or super super cheap, if its from a reputable brand it's not really likely to happen at all

this is kinda useless for most people, if they don't know about the view logger they will still ignore you, and if you confront them about not replying they will just call you a creep or ignore you even more, but its interesting that this even works, a lot of users have asked for this in the vencord server if I remember correctly

Btw you could figure out their general location by sending them something similar and then loading the proxied image from various locations and checking if any of them was cached by Cloudflare. If the image was cached when loading it from Ohio dc then you know the other person also loaded it from there, possibly leaking their location :)

Discord should honestly have an opt-in to show whether or not you have read a message in DMs and Group DMs, would be a welcome feature, considering how common it is on other platforms.

5:55 Be careful. Posting secrets, such as a Discord webhook, in a repository is considered a serious security risk, even if it's a private repository. If someone somehow accesses that repository, it's game over. Same if you forget about the secret and change the repository access settings. Be warned, if you post a secret and then remove it, it will be saved forever in the GitHub repository change log, except if you do some somewhat advanced Git operations.

Protip: you can check if an image has been loaded without making it invisible. It's much less suspicious to post some random nonsense image than an invisible one.

You can also use the invisible link trick; spam a bunch of spoilers with a zws in the middle, and any link pasted after won't show up in the message, but will create an embed

That's pretty much what a lot of people do in HTML business mails as well. One of the images in the footer is usually a tracking link so they know exactly if and when you opened the mail.

For those wondering, the way it works is through the utilization of a function called 'middleware' within the framework the website is running, Next.js. Middleware is pretty much a way to execute code when something is trying to talk to a website before actually processing the request and returning it to the website, which in this case, is discord, trying to grab a png/embed from the website you're running. Usually, middleware is used for redirects, but in this case, detecting when discord is trying to grab data from the website.

I've inspected it rn and the problem is that the discord client wants to load that as an image because the server only responds with an image for some user agents and the message is only empty because it's a very small png You can test this yourself by doing a curl -H "User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Discordbot/2.0)" YOURURL --output response So to answer your question: No this would not work

Just quickly commenting this to let people know that I tried setting this up, and it only logs once, which is from me. There should be AT LEAST 2 since there's the one log between me and the other log for the recipient and more logs made for each time me and the other user get the embed link I'd imagine. Another user can confirm a similar thing.

It doesn't work for all devices, and on the Android mobile app (which I use), it logs every time the message with the view-logger is viewed (can be multiple times).
