Roy Orbison had one of the most smooth powerful voices. He could sing real high falsetto & also low. Elvis Presley loved Roy's voice. Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Only the Lonely", "Running Scared", "Pretty Woman", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the Traveling Wilburys (a rock supergroup) with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. They had a lot of great songs such as "Handle With Care", "End Of The Line" etc.

Elvis had said that he wished he could sing like Roy. Elvis and Roy were label-mates at Sun Records. Roy was able to hit those high notes to the end, he had a 3 octave vocal range. Glad you are enjoying your exploration of Roy.

Look forward to hearing more, you’re gonna be really amazed when you hear the rich power he brings…rolling like warm butter. As he aged his voice developed this really unique roll that only enriched his singing (ala “Drive All Night” & this one). Roy sure could sing those high notes at will and at the just the right time in every song...amazing. You might want to check out Roy's solos with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which are simply gorgeous - his cover of Unchained Melody is a must. Roy didn't use his dark glasses as a prop - he had extremely poor vision (I think that all his siblings had this issue) and had to use very thick lenses to see. The clear thick lenses distorted his looks so he had the lenses made from a dark (almost black) colored glass to help with that issue.

Roy had the most beautifully unique voice in music. Elvis certainly had a unique voice as well, but Roy's voice was just sublime. More beautiful than any of the crooners, certainly more beautiful than anything since. This song is strongly influenced by Roy's involvement with the Wilburys. Not surprising, since Petty and Lynne cowrote it with Orbison, with Lynne producing it.

I remember leaving the office in 1988 and starting the drive home in traffic on Ventura Blvd., in Encino, when the news came across the radio of Roy's death; extremely shocking and saddening. 1988 was a hell of a year. Graduated college, Louis L'Amour died, moved to Los Angeles with no job waiting, got a job, broke up with my girlfriend, Roy died. Hell of a year, for sure.

Yep - a hell of a year. My mother-in-law died in March; my brother died in September; I was still dealing with that when I woke on the morning of 8 December in Australia to the news that Roy had died. I was completely devastated. I bought my first record of Roy in April 1961 (Running Scared) when I was 16 and had just started work. I knew nothing about him (literally). I just liked the song and his voice. I have just spent the last three hours listening to his music and its now over sixty years after buying my first record by him that I am still in awe of his talent. It's unbelievable that his music has given me so much joy for such a long period of time as I never tire listening to him.

@@joekuul8769 Thanks for your kind thoughts. It's funny but when Roy Orbison was first played on the radio in Australia Elvis Presley was the super star and then a few years later The Beatles arrived on the scene. Therefore, little was known about Roy. I am from a large family and everyone were fans of Elvis - but I leaned more towards Roy Orbison so I was on my own. Obviously, I was also taken by The Beatles and other groups of that time. But - Roy has always been my number one favourite since 1961. Anyway, the purpose of telling this is that in 2011 I had my eldest brother stay with me for a week as he was dealing with dementia. It was hard to communicate with him and so I would just play music when he and I were alone together. There was no reaction from him even though I played music that I knew he liked, including songs from Elvis. I then decided to play some Roy Orbison songs and to my amazement my brother turned to me after a while and said 'Gee - that guy has a beautiful voice'. "Can you play some more of him?" My brother's name was Roy and I told him that the singer had the same name as him. He smiled when I said that and it is a beautiful memory that I have to this day. My brother died not long afterwards. I felt so glad that Roy Orbison resonated with him in his final days when other singers didn't. At the same time I felt blessed to have 'discovered' Roy's singing fifty years before my brother did!

Actually, many do not realize this was an overdub performance. If you pay attention to the backup vocalists and listen to the track, it is clear when you pay really close attention that this live appearance was performed to the album track. I recall reading somewhere that the band did not have time to prepare this song because it was too new at the time , and it was a Wilburys effort in producing this song as a solo for Roy.
