Dr. Xavier Amador speaking at the Schizophrenia Society of Nova Scotia's 17th Annual Conference in 2005. Dr. Amador gives a great overview of his LEAP approach (Listen, Empathize, Agree, Partner) to improve communications when a family member has a mental illness and doesn't see a need for treatment.
This is 53 minutes long and is video #2 of 2.

Back in the late 1980s I worked for a rather large residential rehab agency for the mentally ill. One of the residents was plagued by vampires. He'd point out passers-by and say, "Look at that guy! He's a vampire!" The staff would say that they didn't see any vampires and "Bob" would expressed stunned disbelief that we weren't absolutely terrified to live in a city where vampires strolled down the street in broad daylight with blood dripping down their chins. Then one day one of the Treatment Specialists came to the Treatment Specialist meeting and announced cheerfully, "I've cured Bob." That got our attention. She had told Bob, "Personally, I don't think there's any vampires, but I also know that I don't know everything. There could very well be vampires and for some reason I just never became aware of them. So I really don't know anything about vampires. Tell me about vampires." She heard Bob out about the vampires for a while then asked him how vampires could be kept away. Bob said that they avoided silver and garlic The woman suggested that Bob find a way to keep the vampires at bay. The next time she saw him he was in very high spirits, walking around with a cake slicer in one had and a container of garlic salt in the other. He announced that no vampires had bothered him at all since he started carrying silver and garlic everywhere he went. The staff suggested that Bob might find a less cumbersome approach. So he bought a silver pendant to wear around his neck and filled a small envelope with garlic powder to put in his pocket. No more vampires. We were duly impressed.

The concern I have always had - the conclusion is predetermined, and the prognosis is always you need some drug or the other. I am not convinced that this is the answer, because as a scientist, I would rather have questions I can't answer than answers I can't question.

It's hard to do with them when she believed and tells everybody I am trafficking her and our 3 year old daughter yells outside our home that I'm a rapist and a murderer. These accusations have serious consequences if anyone actually thinks any truth to them I have almost gotten into physical confrontations several times with someone who thought they were helping a victim of a terrible crime. Obviously it hurts badly that someone you love thinks your the worst horrible human being and would do that to their wife or children. I don't know what to do

I don’t agree with his theory, it doesn’t work for everyone. Not every is the same. It’s really hard to agree with them when they aren’t aware they are sick and need help. You just can’t agree with everything they say, not everyone reacts the same

I don’t want to say anything that is not true. I would just verify what the delusions is. I don’t have to agree with the delusion. I can say that I had delusions too and I just stopped believing in them. The person will just say that doesn’t work and won’t work. It worked for me and the person doesn’t believe it will work.

How do I help with my daughter and this illnes?? My daughter is currently hospitalized and VERY CONFUSED. When she went to the hospital she picked a chair up and threw it because the devil was present!! However my daughter had a religious upbringing and talk's about Jesus most of the time. However if she's gonna be like this for the rest of her life I would much rather her see Jesus than the devil for the rest of her life!! 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
